Chemical Spill Leaves 300,000 waterless

I live in Charleston West Virginia, and am a long time Pearl Jam fan. We are dealing with a great deal of bs, a coal company spilled chemicals into our water source and 300,000 people in our area have been without water since Thursday. It's like a third world country here, no showers, no drinking water, you can't even use it for laundry. We have water but it comes out of the tap with a strong chemical smell, with no end in sight, just wondering what my fellow 10 Club Members thoughts on this issue are, and yes i know it's not PJam related.

    Yes I saw this on the Net this morning and just thought wow. I am from East-Central Ky and now live in Central Ky. Only thing I can say is I feel for you and your community there. It will be interesting down the road to find out specifically where the responsibility lies. And if Big Coal will own up to what they have done and somehow fix and compensate those affected.     This happens to you guys in coal country all the time. It's time that someone pays! Maybe the band (and everyone reading this) should have a look at some of the very public information that details how the coal industry is ruining the Appalachain Mountains and endangering the local communities.

    Good luck guys. I've lived in NC, WV, and KY. If I wasn't in London right now, I'd offer you my old beat up truck to haul water.

    WV has invited the oil shale extraction industry to set up operations.
    The state has lax environmental regulations concerning fracking.
    The future water quality status of WV is certainly in jeopardy.
    WV has a terrible environmental track record.

    WV depends on the coal industry so these companies can get away with murder. It took 29 deaths in 2012 to make changes to coal mining safety standards when all of the coal companies touted how safe they were in the first place. I was born and raised in WV (Beckley), but live in VA now. I love the state and am proud of where I'm from, but I would never move back. Pearl Jam's song Gone hits home for me when thinking about finally leaving WV.

    Funny you mentioned the song Gone. I moved from Charleston, WV to Phoenix, AZ in 2007 and Gone had special significance for me during that time. Good tune. Every time I hear it now, I think back to the time when we were getting ready to move. I also would never move back. Events like this just cement my decision.

    P.S. The death of the miners was a travesty and Blankenship and his cronies should be in jail.

    Yeah they should be in jail. It says a lot about what funneling money to politicians does...

    I worked as a security guard at that mine back in 2005. The head of security (I think he did some jail time for obstructing the investigation) was a complete a-hole. I knew some of the men that died and knew some of there families. I truly hope this chemical company is held responsible for what happened last week.

    They disabled the methane detectors on the machines. Those methane detectors would automatically shut off the machines when dangerous levels were detected.

    You know what really eats at me... there are 300,000 people without water and all you see on the news is Christie scandal, Golden Globe awards, and A-Roid. It says a lot about the state of society today.... what a shame.

    Because i heard the private sector would police themselves in order to avoid bad press and scare away customers.

    Oh, and look forward to that chemical company issuing a public service statement on how it is creating new jobs in the region to clean up the mess by hiring people to drink up the poisoned waters.

    We lost power and water here once after some hurricanes (not a man made catastrophe like whats happening your side), it was a hard week.

    We also learned to always keep supplies, (think doomsday prep type stuff) because we just never know, what may happen that is not in our control.

    i am not. well that is to say i am not in this state here. im in iowa.

    however, with all the farming chemicals assholes are putting into the ground & spraying on the fields we are not safe here either. you'd think people would protect water

    West Virginia has taken so much abuse- it's sad because it is a beautiful state and was once even more so. This reminds me of the book Erik Reece wrote, Lost Mountain, which talks about the devastation to caused by coal mining to the Appalachian Mtns.

    I hope somehow those of you in the Charleston area are received much needed assistance.

    Guys thanks for the support! The water is back on, but I sure as hell am not drinking it! Or letting my kids bathe in it! It still burns ur eyes and comes out of the tap turquoise blue! Sad state of affairs here in the mountain state, even after they gave the go ahead and told us its safe people are getting sick and you wouldn't believe the people around here with rashes and dermatitis!!

    i heard the company responsible for this just filed for bankruptcy protection. i wish the same would have happened to BP a could of years ago.

    If you can afford it you might consider getting the best filtration system you can find in your price range even if it just makes washing dishes and bathing safer. I truly wish you folks well- that's a heavy burden especially with kids in the family. Keep us posted.

    This is just beyond a sad state of affairs and it really makes me angry what has happened in WV. I live in Louisville and the chemicals just hit us the past Friday and our local water company keeps assuring us that it is so diluted at this point that there is no harm to us at all. They, unlike most of the other communities around us, refused to close their intakes and IMO are putting our whole community at risk. Needless to say, I am not drinking nor bathing in the water for the next few days. In part, because the water company is basing their recommendations on CDC standards which address the safety of this chemical. According to this article (and many other sources I've read of the past few days), the CDC knows next to nothing about the long term effect upon humans. Abtann0527, I'll be sending you good thoughts as your community addresses these problems.

    Freedom Industries has been fined $11,000 for leaving 300,000 people without water for two weeks while dumping a chemical that the EPA really doesn't yet know what harm it could cause ...
