Given to Fly all the way. It's always a little faster live and that really seems to build that first wave of the song a lot higher. I always hope it's part of any setlist that I'm in attendance for.

DTE for sure. They've really been rocking that song lately.

After hearing several live versions of Present Tense, the studio version just doesn't compare.

Another one that spawned more interest for me is Down. This was another one of those "hum along with" tunes. Seeing it performed live gave it a whole new feel. No longer a tap your foot song for me but a jump around song. Jammin. Go Mike!

I´m all with you on DTE
and I kind of fancy smile, Off he goes and Grivance a lot more live than on the albums. Hey most of the songs are better live - rock music is live music!!!

Of the Girl. Didn't dislike it on Binaural, bud didn't feel strongly one way or the other. Saw it open up the 2000 St. Louis show and it was amazing.

I am surprised that so many people picked DTE. Love it live, but also love it on the album.

    Black........ hands down.
Best version I've ever heard of it was Ottawa '06.
There's just something about that song done live. I don't know what it is.
Maybe it's the audience participation. Maybe it's the intensity....fucked if I know.

I will say this though..... if you haven't heard that version, I highly suggest you do.
Man..... I wish I could put a Pearl Jam pic in here as my siggie!!!! LMFAO!!

Most of the songs are better live, of course.

I think the interesting question is which songs are better in the studio versions. For me, that is Yellow Ledbetter.

    Without a doubt. YOU ARE.

Can't say I disliked it on Riot Act but live it's just unreal.

You can feel the guitar, the pause, the lights flashing, and Eddie voice hit the high notes.

A true treat. I will need to check but I believe I have experienced this one 2 times live. I know DC 08 and I believe Albany 06.

Oh, I agree! I know I'm in the minority absolutely loving that song... live, it's even better! I saw it live @ Toronto 2 '06, I just about flipped when it started.

Given to Fly takes off (pun possibly intended) live.

Other than that, after severe radio overkill of Daughter and Better Man, during the 90s, I never wanted to hear them again... I found the love again hearing them live. Actually, I still don't listen to the studio versions of either... gotta love a Daughter tag ;)

As others have noted, most PJ songs are better live. There only a few exceptions. These are my picks that are so much better live than on the studio recordings which often times lack that extra boost of raw energy that I love the band for.

    Release
    WMA
    Given to Fly
    DTE
    Gods Dice
    Save You
    You Are

My first PJ show to witness was at Bonnaroo. How is that for lucky?

I prefered nearly all live versions to studio versions even before my first show. I bought mansfield and penn state before I saw them.

pardon my double posting, but i ABSOLUTELY agree. That song is INSANE live. When I heard it in camden, I was so pumped. It was probably my highlight of the night.

IMO the live versions blow away the studio songs. I never listen to studio albums anymore. Just boots.
