The Concerned About Ed's Drinking Thread

Mind your own business. Get a life. You don't know Eddie Vedder at all you know his music. Eddie Vedder's drinking has never affected any show or any album ever. How much Eddie drinks is none of your business. Nothing in Eddie's personal life is any of your business!Post edited by corduroykelly on0

I guess we're going to talk about whether or not we can talk about it, rather than talking about it. Okay.
To the above, I would say this: I understand the spirit of what you're saying, but I disagree with some of your points. Specifically, this thread was aimed at the band's performances, not at anyone's personal life. If Ed is drunk on stage, that's not his personal life. I appreciate your faith that Ed's drinking has never affected a show, but my point was that I'm not so sure. I don't recall him ever drinking as much as he did on this last tour, and this is entirely my own opinion here but I believe the quality of his performance may be impacted by the alcohol.0 -
Well, maybe at the end of the shows....PJ218304 wrote:and this is entirely my own opinion here but I believe the quality of his performance may be impacted by the alcohol.
I actually thought Ed sounded better this tour than well....since....~2000-2003.
The ends of the shows were a little off....

Do we really know how drunk Ed is during the show? He's a lead singer of a rock band. He's supposed to run around and do crazy stuff at a show even if sober. It is the job description. He could just be playing it up. I've heard the first bottle is gatorade but obviously don't know for sure. He was definitely letting the fans have a lot of the wine. But again, I don't know that we can really tell how drunk Ed really is, but maybe their are some folks out there who can. It can't be that Ed may just be tired after 2.5 hours and that is why he tripped over the amp?
Ed never drinks when he does solo shows, so obviously he doesn't have a problem he can't control folks.0 -
I saw PJ more than once this tour and rest assured that is not the casePJ218304 wrote:here but I believe the quality of his performance may be impacted by the alcohol.

Ed has been drinking his share at shows for year and he can do what the hell he wants. I doubt he is looking to "escape" from anything at the OP stated. Hell, I am happy person and I was drunk at every show I attended this year sans Vancouver and their early alcohol cut off. Some of us like to live it up more than others. Nothing wrong with that if it doesn't harm others.
The guy is a multi-millionare, with wife, kids and seems to be a happy dude doing what he loves for a living. Also, as someone referenced one of the wine bottles contains Gatorade. A guy singing his ass off for three hours needs some form of hydration.
While excessive alcohol consumption can have negative effects on the liver, etc. Ed is in pretty damn good shape. He is pushing 50 and in better shape than the vast majority of folks you see that age....better than the majority of the fans in the audience who are 10-20 years younger than him.

I mean, if Ed were as cool as fuckin' Miley Cyrus, he'd just light a joint on stage & be done with it.

I would like to know if ed gets angry when he calls directv and has to push 1 for English.0

I understand that nuanced conversation has been more and more difficult to have, especially here on the internet, but I'm going to go ahead and jump in anyway on the unpopular side because I'm an idiot.
I was thinking this same thing and I didn't bring it up, but now that it's happened...here goes.
I started thinking about this after the Oakland show. I know if you go to the reviews you'll see tons of good stuff and it was long and who cares if Ed screws up, etc.
But that show wasn't good for Pearl Jam standards (please don't take off from here and tell me how lucky and spoiled I am, that's besides the point). The main reason is Ed seemed to have partied or something before the show. He messed up more than normal and was unclear (unclearer than usual) during his speeches and interacting with the crowd strangely. It really gave the whole show a strange and not completely enjoyable vibe. But it was cool because then I went on to Portland and Spokane, and those shows were outstanding.
But the next thing I thought about was Ed drinking Gatorade out of the wine bottle in Spokane (you could see that it wasn't wine, unlike what was in the big bottle). Why use a wine bottle? Is there an image concern? If so, what is that image and why?
And of course Ed's a big boy and can do what he wants. But if it was your brother or father or adult son, you wouldn't still be concerned? I think the fact that people are concerned is a result of the closeness and the realness that drew many of us into this band and that closeness still exists, for better or for worse.Apr 07, 1994/Oct 01, 1996/Jul 07, 1998/Jul 08, 1998/Aug 29, 1998/Aug 31, 1998/Sep 01, 1998/Sep 03, 1998/Sep 04, 1998/Sep 06, 1998/Jun 01, 2000/Jun 04, 2000/Jun 06, 2000/Oct 20, 2000/Oct 21, 2000/Oct 22, 2000/Oct 24, 2000/Oct 25, 2000/Oct 20, 2001/Oct 21, 2001/May 30, 2003/Jun 01, 2003/Jun 02, 2003/Jun 28, 2003/Jul 02, 2003/Oct 25, 2003/Jul 15, 2006/Jul 16, 2006/Jul 18, 2006/Jul 20, 2006/Jul 22, 2006/Jul 23, 2006/Sep 21, 2009/Sep 22, 2009/Sep 26, 2009/Sep 25, 20110 -
I'm pretty sure the stuff he drinks is so carefully and expensively made it can be considered medicinal.

Even if it was two bottles over 3 hours, I could do that in my sleep.
he takes a few swigs, spills the other half and gives the rest to the people up front.
It is hight blown out of proportion.0 -
This has to win worst thread I've ever seen. :fp:0

So what? Maybe he's a 'social drinker' or likes to drink on stage. I don't normally smoke, but when I go out to the bar, I can smoke a pack in a night and be done. <---also because I'm usually the DD, and don't handle my alcohol very well.
So maybe Ed doesn't drink during his 'off time'...who are we to judge? He's a big boy and can make big boy decisions for himself. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

I personally won't be happy until Ed is going to regular AA meetings and as his sponsor I expect him to call me daily for the first year. After that just during shows whenever he gets the desire to throw it all away and have a drink (or they are playing Crazy Mary).Nature drunk and High0
