In their defense, have you been to Ottawa? I'd forget about it too if it weren't for the great show in '05.

truthfully though 92.8% of americas can't even get into canada because they have had a drinking while driving violation or they were caught w/ $0.13 worth of commercial compressed mexican brown weed, therefore, the canadian border patrol denies entry to these pretty decent folks.

thank goodness i am very capable & able to cross the wonderful us/canadian border to visit canada even at 2:00am (this actually happened & wow, was i ever the guy under the microscope...they aren't fucking around up there at all, no they aren't)

  • Do you know the capital of Zimbabwe?

That will have just as much impact on their daily lives.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

I think we should know the capital cities of our direct neighbors to the north and south of us but I laugh at your response at the same time as agreeing on the impact to their daily lives.
btw, I learned something from your post -- Harare is the capital city of Zimbabwe with almost 3 million people in the metro area. I know nothing about Zimbabwe other than this ^ and that it is a country in the southern part of Africa.

So you are saying that US kids really only need to know how to get to Walmart, shoot a gun, and pace themselves at the Golden Corral buffett?

Good to see others are curious to learn as well!
    ;)

Also, I mentioned our neighbors to the south....for those that did not know it is Mexico City.
Guessing more knew that as Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest in North America.
    Maybe not though...

  • I remember in school we had to memorize every single state capital and the state it belonged to. And I have met people in the US that have never even heard of Manitoba. There's only TEN provinces and TWO (now 3) territories people! It's not that hard! :fp:

Yeah, I knew all of the provinces and capitals when I was a kid as well....but I grew up in VT so Canadians were literally our neighbors.
I dont think most kids in the US today could name all 50 states, never mind find them on a map or tell you the capitals. Big change in priorities and memorization with the internet, search engines and smart phones. Very different world now.

  • The OP needs to watch late night TV when the hosts (Jay Leno or Kimmel) goes out on the streets and ask basic questions about America or history in general to bystanders. People are just. plain. stupid.

I'd like to know how many American kids know what's the capital of the U.S.

I think the best clue is the NHL's 'Senators'.
I mean, if there was a 'Harare Senators' in the NFL, we'd at least be able to make an educated guess at it's Capital... right?

I wrote a very detailed report on Canada in elementary school...complete with the Canadian national flag as the cover. I might even still have it somewhere. I'm sure I know the capital at that time.

But...it doesn't seem as if much, if anything, significant or noteworthy happens there and so I've forgotten it.

Wow! It's embarrassing to admit this but I could not answer the question "What is the capital City of Canada". But I'm not embarrassed at all to say that I've learned something. Thank you!

My wife was just telling me her dad taught a high school US government class in Southern California and most of his students couldn't name the capital city of either California or the United States. Pathetic!
