    Four-way tie:

Buddy Miles Express opening for Jimi Hendrix Experience
    The Alarm opening for U2
Black Uhuru opening for Talking Heads
Blue Cheer opening for The Who

WHOA, those are AMAZING!! (Although I gotta admit, no clue who Blue Cheer is? Will go look them up...)
[Edited to add: I looked them up - AWESOME! Any band that Jim Morrison called the best band he's ever seen... well that has to be cool! Summertime Blues indeed...]

Of shows I've seen, off the top of my head I'd say:

The White Stripes opening for Sleater-Kinney

Hovercraft opening for the Foo Fighters first tour opening for Mike Watt

Public Enemy opening for the Beastie Boys

At the Drive-In opening for Rocket From the Crypt (I think that was the headliner - honestly, ATDI was so amazing, we only stayed for a few songs of the headliner (who was probably quite good themselves) because we were so blown away)

    And two personal favorites:

Uncle Tupelo opening for Drivin' N Cryin (and UT was so unbelievable, DNC got insecure and had their light tech pull their lights (I confirmed several times over the years that this is true), so most of UT's set was in the dark with their one roadie shining one flashlight alternating between Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy. And they still kicked the asses of 90% of the bands I've ever seen, anywhere. My first time sincerely moshing too! (I'm a short chick, just always saw moshing as a lose-lose for me); and

The Clash opening for The Who at Shea Stadium!!!

Let's say knowledge is a tree, yeah.
It's growing up just like me.
  • I would have to say the Hold Steady opening for Counting Crows in 2008. They did not want to leave the stage and at one point I saw someone gesturing from the side of the stage to get them to come off. I had not heard of them and was I was impressed.

    Glen Hansard opening for Eddie
    Candlebox opening for Rush
Vince Neil solo opening for Van Halen made for a fun show

Not sure yet if I am hitting the Aerosmith tour this summer but if I do Slash with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators has a great chance to crack this list.

I've been wracking my brain trying to come up with a good supporting artist that I've seen and I can't think of a single one. All the ones I can recall pretty much sucked. Although to be fair, I have skipped a lot of openers. Surely I've missed out on something good along the way. BUT I think I will soon see the best opener ever, since Mark Lanegan is opening for Nick Cave on July 1st!!!!! I definitely won't be skipping that! :D

Train's first album was amazing, once they popified it went down hill. They do write catchy pop tunes though.

My Morning Jacket was the best I have seen with one exception:

SKID ROW opened for Guns and Roses in 91 on the use your illusions tour, they blew guns off the stage at Alpine that day
    others:
    Glenn Hansard was great
toots and the Maytals for Matisyahu were fun

James Vincent McMorrow opening for The Civil Wars. I ran out and bought his CD right after his set. Not as big a fan of his second record but his first record is incredible!

And Glen Hansard opening for EV was great! Been a huge fan ever since. In fact, I'm going to see him at the Hollywood Bowl in August! :-D

The first band I ever saw live was Jimmy Eat World open up for Blink 182 back in 2001. They were an excellent opener and looking back I'm somewhat puzzled at the paring.
