If you get a chance, check this special out on CNN. Its about the orcas that are kept at seaworld and the the deaths of a few of the trainers.

I've never been an advocate on animal rights and this show isn't going to change that. But it does show the ridiculous and inhumane way these animals are kept.

I need to check this out. I'm a fan of zoos, etc but of course they have to do it the right way.

I'm not making any judgements towards you, but I would argue that there is no right way.

If you wish to see killer whales... I think you should hop on a boat and go off the coast to see them.

keeping orcas in aquariums is one of the most ridiculous things a human being has ever done. these assholes should be set on fire as soon as every orca is released

Agree! And I would say the same for dolphins and beluga whales

if every orca is released back in the wild all or most would die, the capturing of thies animals needs to stop along with the dolphins.

Rather than zoos (which, I'm somewhat reluctant to admit, are fun to visit) what animals really need is habitat or at the very least sanctuary. There is, for example, the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee, a large area of land that provides a natural setting for rescue elephant to live. This is not a place people can go and view wildlife but rather a place for these majestic creatures to live as natural a life as possible.

As well as increased natural habitat, I'm an advocate for creating corridors to connect wild lands to allow species to migrate properly. Creating these corridors would do much to insure the continuation of many species of wild life.

i understand they have been fed for years & haven't hunted for yrs & possibly never have because they may have been born in a fucking aquarium. if we release one orca into a pod of wild ass orcas, i would bet one of two things would happens.

they would kill the introduced orca
    or
the pod would accept the introduced orca & show that orca how to be a badass orca with a huge orca erection

I caught the end of the documentary and I will say that I'll never go to Sea World again. I can understand aquariums that rehab and release animals and keep only those that are not fit for release, but that poor whale that killed the trainer is just a sperm donor so Sea World can make more orcas to sell for profit. I am so disgusted. That is so wrong.

Maybe we just shouldn't fuck with nature (ie, evolution), and let nature take its course for better or worse.

It's done well on its own so far, and if we didn't fuck with it, we wouldn't have to "help" it.

As a viewer, I'm saddened and pissed off.

I can only imagine what these intelligent mammals felt...feel.

(at least through half of this, especially the grieving mother crying out, has been accompanied by tears)

This is something I DON'T want to watch...but feel I have to.

with the exception of water critters, if i was a lion, tiger or some other land animal i'd volunteer to go to a zoo, at least people at the zoo are only there to shoot me with CAMERA and aren't looking to mount me on a wall.

    really!?

your world can be upwards of 1,000 sq. km. and you can run like 80 km/h and you are ok living in a cage?

life's definitely rough out there for lions between poaching, habitat destruction and global warming but still ... a cage?

It was an extremely vague Seinfeld reference to the episode where George rescues the whale and calls is a fish in the story.

The Cove was another disturbing and eye opening documentary on the abuses and slaughter of sea mammals, in particular dolphins.

no ... i get that ... their numbers are definitely dwindling ... it's more the point that you would rather live in a cage ... i don't get that at all ... sure, you get fed ... but that's no life for any animal let alone a lion ...

Plus you get the chance to kick the shit out of one of those hunters with their fancy hats, cargo shorts, high socks, and big guns.

"I say jolly old fellow, it looks like a splendid day to shoot a lion. What say we go after tea, sport?"

Hunt animals... except instead of coming across them and shooting them with a gun... shoot them with a picture. It took every bit of patience to not admonish my colleagues for oohing and aahing while looking through a photo album of African hunting exploits. How does one get their kicks killing zebras?

I understand someone killing a deer for the meat they can put in their freezer, but I cannot understand trophy hunting.

    I don't know.

I watched this exploitative piece about the exploitation of these intelligent and emotional sea-dwellers. It's a very sad practice to keep them confined in such small quarters and make them do tricks for food. It would be a shame if human deaths end up being the main reason this practice gets banned.
