The main problem is that people like up 5+ hours before the show and are dead sober to try and get the first 3 rows. We walked right in at 8:00 and were about 20 feet back from Eddie in the middle. I would never give up prime drinking time and getting in the zone outside tailgating for a few hours for 15 feet. But that's just me.

I was far back and up in the arena at night 2 in Philly, and the ones I saw "rocking out" were rows 1-3.

Yes! And that's what I've noticed at most of the shows. Although I will rock out anywhere in the venue. As long as I'm there I don't care, but it was pretty fucking amazing to be up that close! I prefer being sober at shows because 1) I want to remember the whole thing as clearly as possible 2) I don't want to spend the whole night peeing or wanting to pee. I can drink after the show. Tall people can take it for granted getting into GA at any time, but if I have more than 3 people in front of me I am not gonna see shit. I was in the front section of the floor seats night 1 and I couldn't see a damn thing. Another plug for 10c seating to go by height Eddie's vertically challenged...he should support this movement!
I think PJ shows are a personal experience...enjoy it however you enjoy it best, drink, be stone cold sober, rock out, sing, stand perfectly still. Just enjoy the music and the experience however you enjoy it best. The last thing I'm going to worry about is if someone is enjoying the show the way I think they should. That might mean I'm focusing on the wrong thing.

been that way up front for years now...nothing new.
the lottery system added a bit of a change. i actually liked that they did a GA even thou i personally wouldnt go near it bec of what OP mentions. it gives those that never seen a show up front at least a chance, other than the lottery.
i cant control myself and i jump around like wild so a jam packed GA is no good for me.
actually come to think of it the borgata shows were GA and I think people just stayed away from the crazy guy. i usually first warn my seat neighbor and offer a beer. its funny bec i know most people around think im on something other than pearl jam.
Hey, some of us who have been to 30 plus concerts and been in the fanclub since '92 are not "lame-ass 10c senior members"! Sure I would rather see everyone off their phones, without beers, rockin out, and doing the pogo during "Go". 2-3 hours of this is the best workout I can ever get. But, life is not perfect so "I'll ride the wave where it takes me."

I agree
One of things I love about PJ fans is from my experience they are some of the nicest fans you'll meet. More like a family than most other fans. I try for pit tickets to most of the concerts I go to now because you can get close and they are usually big enough to allow both kinds of fans to enjoy the show. Selfish works both ways
Tonight, I'll be the old bastard off to the side of the pit (with my wife) with a big ass smile on my face.
I used to agree with you, but I can also look at people who are perfectly still, and I'm pretty sure they're in their own happy place. Some of us express that outwardly, some inwardly, but it's not my place to call one way right or wrong. As an introvert who feels pushed out of his shell at a good concert, I can understand silent awe, jumping excessively and singing every word, or even just a head-bob with a shit-eating grin. Something that I've discovered though, is that I feel more comfortable jumping when I see others around me - that kind of energy is contagious. But rather than criticizing others for not jumping along with me, I'd rather help induce it in the crowd, and enjoy the best rock band in the world regardless.

I love that discussion! I'm 5'2" and my better half is 6'5". We constantly get people griping about being behind him, but I have to laugh when I peek out from in front of him to drop into the conversation. What about me? Either we go to the back so he's not in people's way (then I can't see), or we don't experience shows together? That's not going to happen!
He's a huge fan (no pun intended), a great audience member, and all around awesome guy. I'd rather stand behind him than be around someone breaking Eddie's sole commandment. Don't be an asshole! :nono:

"huge fan" Yeah tall people can't help being tall anymore than we can help being short. The tall guys around me in GA were all really nice letting me and one other girl stand in front of them. No matter how much we jumped we weren't blocking anyone's view Very cool people around us. Almost at every show I've been to, even in the seats, if it's a tall guy in front of me he's turned around to ask if I cans see and shifted a little to the right or left. Much appreciated

i didn't bother to read this whole thread, so excuse me if this is a repeat of a lot of comments ... but YOU'RE RIGHT. some people don't belong down there. i'm a geezer. been with the band since the start so i've seen plenty of shows from up front and i remember plenty of crazy shit happening in the pit back in the day -- and how i used to go nuts myself. some of us have gotten old and crabby so don't pay any attention to us. go fucking ape in GA if you want. i'm sure the band LOVE it when they see it (as long as you show a little respect for your neighbors). your enthusiasm lets PJ know how much we love them. we had our chance to go crazy up front. now you have yours. go for it. we can always buy seats in the reserved section. seems reasonable, no?

I took a friend of mine to her first PJ show in Montana last fall and we got pit tickets for that show. The guys around us were really protective and helpful, she had an epic time. We dubbed one guy "pink shirt guy" because we couldn't for life of us remember his name, but he was great about making sure we could see and keeping rowdies off of us. We ended up about 5 "rows" back and saw most of the show. Thanks PJ fans for being mostly cool!
Unfortunately, as I've heard some people complaining about, we got to watch the other part of the show through the screen of someone's gigantic smart device as they were filming over their heads
But hopefully they posted the footage on YouTube or something so innumerable fans worldwide had the benefit of the awesome view.
I'm going to guess that most of pearl jams fans are in their 30's, 40's, and 50's. I really wouldnt expect that demographic to be jumping around like teenagers and 20 yr olds. Ive gone to a few concerts where the mosh pits ruined the show for me. I'm not there to jump around like a mad man. I'm there to listen to the show.
So I guess I'm one of those boring fucks in the GA that don't run around like I'm on pcp. See you guys in the GA in Charlotte!
clearly the seniority issue was not the problem. I think the science experiment is over
Now can we give me back my seniority seating? thanks
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

That's awesome. Yeah most of the fans I've encountered are really cool. Glad you've had similar experiences
I'm so torn on people filming the shows. I've been watching youtube videos all week, so I do appreciate them and I'm glad somebody records them...I just wish the people in front of me wouldn't do it Selfish, I know. But if I'm 5'0 tall and can manage to get some great pics without raising the camera over my head they should be able to too dammit!

Also I think some of the issue is that once people wait in line all day and don't get the first couple of rows just start to get bummed out. They then mope during the show and start threads like:
"I waited for 9 hours in line and I didn't get the first two rows, Ten club fucking sucks!"
"Bring back seniority seating"
"**Official wristband lineup thread**"
You can usually see these people snapchatting with other fans next to them.

well, it is GA...so if you can't handle people dancing, singing, and possibly a bit of movement, then it's obviously not the right spot for you. I don't care if people want to just stand around - I just want them to know that I won't be doing that.
in london this summer, I had a good seat, not 10c but public sale with a decent view, but the constant shuffling of the people around me to get beer, leave for the merch, bathroom breaks etc was really annoying, that and not being able to witness the show with friends. those are the main reasons I will always try to be GA at a show, if I can find a way.

Sorry, but I'm not torn at all. For decades, people enjoyed watching - and for most of us hardcore enough to be in this fan club and love this band and be on these forums - experiencing shows with our eyes, ears and all senses. And if it was amazing, we told people about it. And there have been live recordings to at least allow others to experience the sonic part.
But I think it's absurd that people want to hold up their stupid devices and make shitty recordings to put on YT for people to enjoy who didn't spend the money and take the time to go to the shows. Wasn't that part of the magic, being one of the 500 or 5000 or 50,000 who were actually at the show, the rest of the world be damned? Though of course not everyone has the time/money/freedom to go to shows, I do understand that.
Wow, I sound like such an old fogey! Sorry...I just can't help it, it drives me nuts when people are filming. But it's everywhere, from clubs to theaters to arenas, etc., I know it's the way of the world. Sorry for the rant!
P.S. I hope you get to hear "All Or None" in Cali (I think I replied to your thread on that earlier...; )

Old fogey No I hear you on this. I really want to enjoy the in-person experience and not have to duck around somebody's arm the whole night. I love being able to re-live my favorite moments of shows...and the videos are nice in being able to do that. I personally don't want to spend the whole show so focused on recording that I'm not really in the moment. The shows pass so quickly as it is, I try to be as really present as possible.
Thank you! I hope they play it too I would love love love to hear it.

That's the spirit! Everyone who's just trying to enjoy the show should be have to be bothered by morons with cameras so you can enjoy concerts you didn't attend!
I have to say I'm with the majority on this one. I don't care if you're recording, filming, miming or translating via morse code in your POGO, just don't hold a smart phone or an iPad over your head and block five rows behind you. If you've got an awesome view, and you want to hold your camera in front of your own face and watch the show through your screen and post it wherever, that's great. But the people supplying epic sound or footage from shows aren't being inconsiderate of people around them, you barely know they're there.
I really appreciate most of the underground recordings that surface, I've lived vicariously through countless numbers of them, but the people who pay money and stand in line for hours to be there really do (in my opinion) deserve to experience whatever their physical stature permits. I'm short. I know sometimes I won't see a thing. But if I've got a shot through somebody's shoulders and all I see is your camera, I'm going to be bummed.
Everybody enjoy your experience, be present, soak it in, just be considerate... Please.
Yes, and turn off the damn light while filming. Nothing like being spotlighted from behind during Black.
As far as the "enjoying the concert via YouTube when you didn't attend" angle...I think you're saying shit just to say shit. If you feel that way then lead by example and stop posting pictures of your meals on Facebook.

GA has been lame. Wish there was more moshing. I asked 7-8 people if they would support me starting a mosh pit and all said "No Way" in Baltimore. I'll report back from Charlottesville and Charlotte, but I'm not expecting anything else different. PJ fans are just too old at heart. Too many parents and lawyers and oldies in 10C.....sorry to say it but it has to be said.

Just enjoy the music and the experience however you enjoy it best. The last thing I'm going to worry about is if someone is enjoying the show the way I think they should. That might mean I'm focusing on the wrong thing.

the lottery system added a bit of a change. i actually liked that they did a GA even thou i personally wouldnt go near it bec of what OP mentions. it gives those that never seen a show up front at least a chance, other than the lottery.
i cant control myself and i jump around like wild so a jam packed GA is no good for me.
actually come to think of it the borgata shows were GA and I think people just stayed away from the crazy guy. i usually first warn my seat neighbor and offer a beer. its funny bec i know most people around think im on something other than pearl jam.

:nono:

well said!
So I guess I'm one of those boring fucks in the GA that don't run around like I'm on pcp. See you guys in the GA in Charlotte!
Now can we give me back my seniority seating? thanks
I'm so torn on people filming the shows. I've been watching youtube videos all week, so I do appreciate them and I'm glad somebody records them...I just wish the people in front of me wouldn't do it

You can usually see these people snapchatting with other fans next to them.
in london this summer, I had a good seat, not 10c but public sale with a decent view, but the constant shuffling of the people around me to get beer, leave for the merch, bathroom breaks etc was really annoying, that and not being able to witness the show with friends. those are the main reasons I will always try to be GA at a show, if I can find a way.
EDIT: nevermind dumb question
Thank you! I hope they play it too

I've long been to one show and only been in the ten club for a couple years. are u a more "hardcore" fan because of that? no. that's just silly. thank you to all of you people holding your silly devices so I could enjoy them. all of them.
That's the spirit! Everyone who's just trying to enjoy the show should be have to be bothered by morons with cameras so you can enjoy concerts you didn't attend!
Please.

Chris.
