Ron Howards Made in America documentary is premiering this Friday on Showtime. Philly.com just ran a not so complimentary review:

http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainm ... _talk.html

"Well, your director's eyes could be considerably larger than his mouth. That's not necessarily a liability for a filmmaker, but in this case, it makes for an incongruous and indulgent documentary."

"The performance footage is absolutely magical throughout. Some of the highlights include Janelle Monáe doing a kicky and kinetic version of "Tightrope," an operatic display by local girl Jill Scott, and Eddie Vedder alternating lines with a roaring, rain-drenched crowd on Pearl Jam's "Corduroy."'

"If only Howard was interested in hearing people sing. But he's far more concerned with hearing them talk . . . and talk . . . and talk."

"Though painfully brief, the vibrant footage of acts like Passion Pit, D'Angelo, Dirty Projectors and Gary Clark Jr. on stage indicates that Made in America could have been a magnificent concert film. Instead, it's a pompous, overly earnest documentary, striated with flashes of brilliance."

I saw this last night and there were parts that were very interesting including some cool stuff with remaining members from Run DMC and some background on when they did "Walk This Way" with Aerosmith. That was my non PJ favorite part of the documentary. Gary Clark Jr continues to impress and I'm surprised he didn't get more coverage in what was shown. I wish they did more to include his performance.

As for PJ: The very beginning showed JZ coming on stage joining PJ (no music from this part though) and then a bit later they showed most of Betterman and near the end; all of Corduroy. The camera work and visuals are stunning and I went to bed wishing somehow the rest of the PJ video footage is released one day and not left stuck in a vault. What a sin it would be for PJ's entire MIA performance to be video recorded and never see the light of day

Just a warning for those watching it tonight or in the future - not for your children's ears....Just a head's up.

I can't answer that one...maybe they are waiting for the documentary to be released? I wish I knew...even if they released it without JZ coming out on stage at the end, we would gladly take it

That's one of the few videos on youtube that has decent sound quality so I could live with ripping the audio for that one song but I would obviously prefer if they release the whole show.

I ripped the audio on youtube for each song to make myself a "bootleg", but the quality sucks for the most part and the songs don't flow into one another so it doesn't have the same feeling as a real bootleg.

    PLEASE RELEASE THE MIA BOOTLEG!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks for the link.

Definitely a bit wordy. I think Gary Clark Jr. was the highlight.

Really enjoyed the documentary. I had no idea what the festival was about, or why it was called Made in America. I knew nothing about Jay-Z going into the movie. I was impressed by his thoughtfulness and hope that music and festivals such as this are avenues to breaking down barriers and bringing people of diverse backgrounds together. Hearing him say we have made progress on racism and need more work on sexism, homophobia etc, pleasantly surprised me. I didn't expect it from a hip hop artist. His idea that everyone has a talent and can succeed if they put their best efforts toward that talent resonates, and I hope inspires people.

I enjoyed the interviews, particularly with some of the support personnel, the surviving members of Run-Dmc (who shared their initial reaction the the suggestion that they cover "walk this way" with the original lyrics was negative - "we can't sing this hillbilly gibberish", and Janelle Monae, who explained that she wears black and white to honor her background - her parents worked in service jobs and wore uniforms to work every day.

The music clips were good, especially PJ's "Corduroy" in the pouring rain. I wish they'd made the movie a little longer and included more music, but I enjoyed the whole movie and its themes.
