Where's the love for Future Days?

Don't understand the hate.
This is a brilliant song. One of the stronger efforts IMO.
If this was a Springsteen song it would get the love it deserves. Just saying....

Dude that Can song is a favorite of mine.

As far as Future Days by PJ... it is growing on me, but I'm of the opinion that Yellow Moon should have closed out the album and the piano intro/outro is a bit too much for me... I think it would have been better striped down a bit more.

I cannot disagree with the fact that YM could have been a nice closer. But FD really is a nicely written Vedder song.

I'm enjoying the album version. I heard it at Wrigley and I didn't know what to think about it. It was after 1am, I was tired, wet, and wanted to rock!! So I don't think I allowed myself to enjoy it as much at Wrigley.

"Oh yeah? Which president's on it?"

It starts out with some promise with the piano, but then Ed comes in with the melody and that is where I shut it down. Great album, but Future Days is one I just do not like...at all. To me both the music and the lyrics are way to sappy. To quote Ed recently, "high sugar content".

And I am not saying this to be negative as I like the album as a whole even though there are probably 5 songs I don't think I'll come around to but understand that is my problem and musical taste. I'll listen to just about anything PJ releases even if I don't love it, but Future Days is really the first song that I can't listen to.

Sounds like a song that Pete and Ronnie left off of Rough Mix.
Another person here who thought they would hate it after hearing the Wrigley debut,
but find myself enjoying it rather much.

I don't think it's a bad song but it isn't one that I need to hear again.

I like mid to fast tempo moody to angry PJ....not on the verge of tears PJ

Only heard it twice but I feel the same way. Nice way to close the album; especially following SBM and YM. I need to find the lyrics though.

Even though it's probably my least favorite song off the album, I do like the song. Lyrically, it's not his strongest. But it is a beautiful song.

I really think this song would sound a lot better without the piano part. Replace that with guitar (or possibly organ) and you're on to something.

He should put it on another solo album minus brendan o briens cheesey keyboards.

The song has great lyrics but it's not a Pearl Jam song. Yellow Moon would've been a perfect closer.

You want to know what else would make it MUCH better?

If they had put the song an another album.
Maybe The Carpenters could have covered it, along with Sleeping with an elf, or whatever the fuck that other song is.

This song should be a standard "first dance" song at weddings for years to come. I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way. When I listen to it, though, I actually feel as if I am watching the end of a romantic comedy where our hero and heroine managed to get married at last, despite the pack of wild dogs and the drunk mother of the groom that threatened to ruin the wedding, and now are gazing into each others eyes, dancing to this song at their reception.

But I like it. I don't think it's a bad end to the album; I am relatively indifferent to the piano outro. If anything, I feel that this album's song order is better than that of most of PJ's albums. I like it much better than the three slow songs on Backspacer. At the same time, I hope it does not become the new "beginning of first encore" song every night.

Yeah Future Days isn't a bad song, but BOB has made it sound a little soft rock with his piano bits...

I don't like to bang on about the past, I'm not someone who wants to see a return to Ten (not a huge fan of the album), but Pearl Jam used to write songs like Given To Fly, All Or None, Nothing As It Seems, Present Tense - epic songs which seemed to have a lot more depth and musically more interesting...

Isn't Future Days a little boring?

People moaned about Thin Air, but that's a far more original love song...

    Too much Eddie these days...

I'd much rather hear Chris Martin play the keyboard part on this song than BO'B.

This isn't a PJ song and it shouldn't be on that album. Ed could keep songs like these for his solo albums...same with SBM...

"Sleeping By Myself" and "Future Days" really harm the album's conclusion. The keyboards are incredibly cheesy on FD. The song would be a million times better without them, I think. That said, it's still a fairly cheesy song. Not too huge on the lyrics. Decent melody. Probably my least favorite Pearl Jam album closer next to "Inside Job." SBM sounds like a Jason Mraz song. Loved the Ukulele Songs versions, but I just can't handle this full-band rendition. Would have worked as a holiday single or b-side, but certainly not on the album. Easily the weakest songs on the album. Those and "Sirens." (sorry, just not a fan of "Sirens.")

Future Days is a good song, and that's all that matters to me. I wish there had been Internet message boards in the 60s: " 'Hey Jude' isn't a Beatles song. Paul should have saved it for his solo album."

My other point would be, people really need to stop equating "sentimental" with "cheesy." It's time to grow up and get a girlfriend, people.

    It's the arrangement that's cheesy.

I love this song too. Everything about it. I think its one of their more earnest songs. A lot of songs are written from different perspectives, but I think this one comes from the heart. I'm glad they didn't strip it down and make it more obscure, because theres nothing wrong with shouting from the rooftops once or twice in your life.
