I hate to say it... I saw PJ20 in a theater on opening night and was gravely disappointed. Cameron Crowe has said that The Kids Are Alright was the inspiration for PJ20, but then he changed his mind and decided to do a more straightforward kind of documentary. The problem is that Crowe is friends with the band and didn't want to offend them by getting into some darker areas. It made for a bland film.

HAD Crowe taken the "Kids Are Alright" approach it would be been much better. Let the performance clips (with songs played in their entirety) speak for themselves. The thing that makes the band so special didn't come across in PJ20 because none of the live clips are allowed to play out without interruption.

I love the idea of getting together with a bunch of fans in a theater to watch something PJ related, but not for this. Maybe for "The Kids Are 20" which I understand was on the Blu Ray.

I have to agree on this - PJ20 is all a bit safe, and far too much time to spent on Andrew Wood and Mother Love Bone. Over 2/3 of the film is up to VS and then it speeds through the next 18/19 years.

It's still a great watch, after all it's well made, and concerns our favourite band, but it's so much "Band-Endorsed" that the tougher topics such as the drummer situations, Ed's overtaking of the band are kind of brushed over. Also the difficult albums such as Vitalogy and Binaural are hardly mentioned - + no footage of the No Code tour. The Kids Are Twenty is great
  • What is the riff playing while Jeff and Stone discuss playing music and writing songs after Andy died?

On the Netflix version, it is from 12:08 to 12:38. Jeff considered retiring from music and leaving Seattle. Stone quickly went back to writing and playing. Jeff is shown shooting baskets, followed by Stone playing his Les Paul.

It occurs just before "Footsteps/Times of Trouble" in the film.

If I recall, the same riff is also in the film Singles, as Kyra Sedwick's character departs on a boat.

Another thing struck me...hearing the founding members recount the formation of the band. History often tells of Pearl Jam as formed by Jeff and Stone after Mother Love Bone ended. It sounds in the documentary as if Mike was equally integral in the formation of the band presently known as Pearl Jam. Stone recalls Jeff playing with other people and "having a good time doing that". As Mike tells it:

"We (Stone and Mike) got together and we started playing in his parent's attic. That's when I remember the conversation, 'We gotta get Jeff Ament in the band. ' I remember him saying 'f@$% Jeff Ament or something like that' and I was kinda shocked. Like, that's your guy! You've been with this guy forever!'

Stone says he was initially hesitant, but changed his mind with Mike's encouragement. The rest is history. It's all water over the dam now, but I was surprised to learn Mike's role of the inception of Pearl Jam.

  • Hi everyone.

I would like to bump this thread with my story about the PJ20 film instead of starting a new one.

I will try to keep it short.

I wanted to start our PJ20 Canadian tour off with a perfect beginning so as soon as I found out I got 10c tix to the Calgary show I immediately went online and reserved two seats for the PJ20 premiere showing at the Cineplex theatre.

My wife and I arrived in Calgary at noon, went out for lunch and enjoyed downtown Calgary. The show started at 7:30.

We arrived at the theatre at 7:00 thinking we would choose our seats. Boy were we surprised. The theatre was sold out (but we had reserved tix).

We ended up Front row in the last two seats left side.

The movie started and we were in awe of the situation we were experiencing.

I will admit though, I left the theatre feeling a little confused. Was this a movie about PJ or about the crucial roots of PJ?

I felt the movie left me wanting to see more of PJ not what I just saw.

The concert the next night of course made up for the feelings I had about the PJ20 movie.
