8 year old bride from Yemen dies on wedding night

A young girl in Yemen died after having sexual relations with a 40-year-old man who became her husband in an arranged marriage, according to media reports.

The 8-year-old was identified as “Rawan” and died from torn genitals and severe bleeding in the northwest city of Hardh, Gulf News reported, citing Yemen media accounts.

The child lived in a tribal area that borders Saudi Arabia. Human rights organizations have called for the arrest of the husband, the news site Al Bawaba said.

Yemen has often been criticized for allowing girls to be forced into arranged marriages.

Human Rights Watch reports that 14% of girls in Yemen are married before age 15, with 82% married before they are 18.

The country passed a law in 2009 setting the minimum age for marriage at 17. It was later repealed after conservative lawmakers said it went against Islamic teachings.

    Worse is that I believe she's not an exception - maybe only in her heartbreakingly-short life being reported amid the many not.

    unfortunately like with most things in this world...it's all about the benjamins baby. the fathers of these young girls get paid to give away their daughters. and in cultures where women are considered less than dogs, it's a win/win for the father. he doesn't have to pay to support his daughter anymore and he gets the dowry from the future husband. it's just so repugnant.
    if you think what I believe is stupid, bizarre, ridiculous or outrageous.....it's ok, I think I had a brain tumor when I wrote that.

    You can understand their desire to cover up the story. I mean... come on... imagine if this sparked a movement to restrict their license to bed 8 year olds?

A child died in a violent fashion, there's no excuse for either way. Point your anger at your President that kills children by the dozens instead of someone calling out the truth.

    I never knew we judged people by the degree of barbarity on which a child is killed. You exhibit outrage on the death of one, where are your threads when the Nobel Peace President rains down drone missiles upon dozens?

    That outrage is there.

    It's throughout various (and numerous) other, more appropriate threads. This thread was dedicated to a young girl and many others like her in an oppressive society. It wasn't meant to be dismissed, derailed and turned into... yet again... another Obama bashing thread.
