I guy I work with - approx 45-50 yrs old went last night. He actually went to see Liam Finn, and didn't know much about EV.
I was telling him that he is in for a treat.
I was down on the floor, but spotted him after Liam's set up on the balcony. From Time to time during the show I would look up and catch him right into it.
He staggers in to my office this morning and simply says this:
"I have been going to rock concerts in Toronto for 35 years. I have seen Neil Young, Metallica, U2, Bruce.....(he pauses)......but I have never seen anything like that".
haha, that's awesome, glad he felt that way

ok, to the diehard fan these questions may be pedestrian... but here goes:
1. what's up with the batman wings onstage? and the poster? what's the connection with ed and batman? (boyhood hero? battling evil?)
2. i took a few pics (no flash! don't berate me!). in one, i see a framed photo leaning against the table where ed had his drink, it faces the left side of the stage. did anyone sitting close on that side see what it's a photo of?
3. explain/discuss the lab coats please.
thanks

Night Two was an incredible experience just like Night One, though my energy level was not as high as for night 1 which is probably related to being out drinking until 2 in the morning in downtown Toronto with some crazy Americans. I was 5th row back in the right balcony tonight which was a little more frustrating but I enjoyed the show more as I studied Ed more and took in the music. I had some meethead behind me yelling Eddie Eddie many times and his girlfriend would try a couple of times and they talked alot during the show, which was annoying. I came close to asking them to shut up and enjoy the show. Funny thing is I expected them to be young, like in their 20's and when I turned around the guy looked like he was 35-40 and the woman in her 30s, and I was like WTF, anywho.
Being shut out of 10 club for both shows, I was just happy to be in Massey Hall, though I admit to some jealousy when I saw my fellow fan club members going up front and shaking Eddie's hand, but then I thought of the Pearl Jam karma, what goes around comes around and I must remember that I won the lottery at Mansfield I so it all balances out, plus I won Demetrios DVD box of live PJ lovin so maybe that evened it out for these shows.
We all got a treat at these shows, the memory will last forever, incredible songs, hilarious witty responses to the crowd, funny stories, man, what a night

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in, last night was amazing!!!! I knew a few people at the show, some where only casual fans but walked away amazed to say the least!!!!
btw...does anyone have any idea who was singing the version of Small Town that Ed walked on stage to??????

I think it was Liam Finn. He came out to it on the west coast and thats what some of the west coast people had been saying.

Ed explained during the 1st Massey Hall show that an African singer (whose name escapes me at the moment), a gentleman 65 years young who's blind and has only 3 teeth left presented Jason Mueller (Ed's brother) and Fernando Apodaca (the director responsible for the "Life Wasted" video) with said recording when they returned to Africa to visit him after originally travelling there to film footage of him several years back,...

I'm still in awe. Incredible two nights, but last night pretty much blew my mind. Met some great people, had absolutely brilliant seats last night, got to thank Liam for playing with such passion, and got to see Ed set the concert bar so high I honestly don't know what could surpass it. I am officially hooked

Again, day 2, just freakin' amazing!!!! My man, my sis and I went to our friend’s place for a lovely, home-cooked dinner. We chatted and whooped it up at his place a while and then came to the show. I sat with my sissy and our seats were mint!!! My sis was in awe. The poor thing had a really bad sunburn and was pretty uncomfortable, but she just loved the show. I was so happy because going to this show was her birthday request and her birthday was back in May soooo, this was a long time coming. Ed was just as incredible as ever. I mean, ya gotta love a guy who comes out and plays not just one, not just two, not just three, but FOUR Neil Young tunes amongst another WILD setlist!!!! Very nice touch! As always, a pleasure. Thank you!

Eddie almost looked like he was choked up at the end as he went around in shook hands. He looked like he didn’t want to leave.
He was quite choked up there at the end. Great post btw (didn't want to quote the whole thing).
I also thought his remarks about Chris McCandless were great ("I'm going to miss this young man, and having him in my heart all the time")
So many highlights...everyone else has summed it up. Liam Finn and EJ are great. Eddie is an amazing showman. 2 awesome nights. don't really know what else to say....it's all been said here.
One of my favourite comments was when someone requested "Do the Evolution", so Eddie goes on to quote Bill Hicks--how people who believe in creationism look less evolved--and then goes on to say "That's how your voices sound" (the idiot screamers). haha
I didn't think it was possible for him to get back there...the peaks had already been hit, so I went in, doubting that EV could be any more ON for Toronto #2, especially after witnessing the magic that was Toronto #1. Not possible I thought.
Well wrong I was to doubt EV's superpowers...and, but, damn, I'm still in shock and awe of what was played and how it went down, for this last night at Massey Hall. Ed rose to the occasion and dropped what will surely be talked about as one of the best shows ever played, by 1 man, a few guitars, and some choice songs.
Highlights:
To whomever yelled out I Am A Patriot...thank you so much for that
Long May You Run...it just doesn't get better than that and I'm so grateful he played it both nights
Rise...the perfect "unplugged guitar" moment
EV on drums!
Let My Love sing along
EV's choices of covers
Thanks to 10c, especially...hardest ticket to get ever. Scalpers piss me off.
Overall well behaved crowd, all things considered.
Was hopin for Grownin Up and I'm One :(
Liam's show gets better each time...it's no surprise why he's on this EV tour.
Great drummer, singer, songwriter, guitar/bass player...lol !

It was great meeting and hanging out with you ariel, aka liz....it is nice to see another fish hooked onto the Pearl jam Reel!
i thought there was a nervous energy in the crowd - i think with each passing show ed's learned to deal with the hecklers by being more "aggressive" towards them ... you could tell early on that much of the crowd was weary of these guys and that ed wanted to keep "driving" as he put it ... so, the first part of the show was a methodical attempt to get thru the set ...
although the music was fantastic as before - the connection wasn't quite there ... but that changed from the first encore onwards ... i think the small venues inspire ed and he wanted to make the most of his time at massey hall ... his arrangement of helpless was A++ considering it was a first and that he just added it ... RITFW is always a highlight for me cuz he sings it with the conviction of someone who believes in those words (as with most of his songs) ... and hard sun is just a great closer for these shows ...
I totally agree with you about the connection between the audience and Ed at night 2; I liked the vibe of the crowd on night 1 better (minus the usual hecklers) and Ed's story-telling and banter during night 1.... But setlist from night 2 was KILLER.... I was at work today - a very busy, hectic clinic - completely exhausted from two late nights in a row, but managed to completely keep my zen about me because I've been singing Helpless, Old Man, Long May You Run all day long...
I hope Eddie has soem kinda massey Hall cd put out. He loved playing the shit out of the place too. cheers .
I got the sense that Ed would be proud as shit to have a "Eddie Vedder at Massey Hall" CD to have in music collections alongside "Neil Young at Massey Hall"

for the first time EVER I can't thank the 10C for my seats -but just being in the building was enough for me
1. I believe the wings were a gift from another band - I can't remember the story, I'm not even sure if it was true
2. if it was me it would be a photo of my guy and my kids
3. maybe it's the eddie vedder experiment
couldn't ask for another song
I really think ed's having a great time with this, no - not like he's going to "go solo" more like he's just loving playing and having fun with the crowd and enjoying each place he goes

I attended both shows, and during the first show I was let down that Eddie had a ukulele on stage and didn't play that song. If you put aside the comedic lyrics, they actually hold a large amount of truth, and would have fit in perfectly given the setting. Anyway, I was blown away regardless, the concert was amazing, but I felt that I missed out on something.
When I got home, I randomly checked Craigslist, and amidst the scalpers, there was a post saying single gallery tickets were on sale. Sure enough, I go onto the Massey Hall website, and I got the chance at a single seat. I stewed on it for a half-hour, and the ticket was still there. Finally, I convinced myself to buy it. Left Gallery, Row B, Seat 0. I didn't know Massey Hall even had a Seat 0, let alone tickets still for sale.
It turned out being one of the best seats in the house. How's that for luck? It was meant to be.
So, I was determined to hear Soon Forget. Since I saw the show the night before, I knew exactly what was coming. While Eddie was playing Millworker, I saw the roadie bring out the black ukulele. I had to do this, but I would only yell if the appropriate moment came about. After Eddie finished playing and the applause died down to silence, I realized that no better time would arise.
As best I could with my stupid orthodontic appliance in my mouth, I gave a half-assed yelp: "SOON FORGET!"
I wasn't sure if anyone down there heard me, and I thought I lost my chance, but not long after, some brave person on the floor also said, "YEA, SOON FORGET!"
Eddie began strumming a few chords on the ukulele, and said to us, "I, uhhh, don't know the chords for that one!"
He played it faster. "... but, you know, it does sort of sound Chinese when you play this thing fast!"
Looking a little caught off-guard, he said something to the degree of: "Tell you what, let me play the song I was gonna play, and I'll get back to that one."
And sure enough, immediately after You're True, I heard those first few gentle chords, and I couldn't contain myself, tears welled up and I sang along for the whole song. I'll never forget that moment in my life.
And what came next? After all the crowd banter from the previous night and up to now, he grabbed the acoustic and belted out LUKIN. Unbelievable.
I believe I enjoyed the first show slightly more because it was absolutely hilarious, the music sounded better from where I sat, and I got the tickets from a kind soul willing to sell them for face value off of Craigslist. But the setlist for night II was unbelievable, and the crowd was much more tame.
What more can I say? It's been said already. I would be forever grateful if someone who happened to capture Soon Forget or my yell before You're True put their video/audio up somewhere. Cheers to Eddie for a great show, and thanks to those who have posted videos online.

I just wanted to say thanks Ed for the memories of Massey Hall. Just when you think it can't get any better after night one, then there's night two. I will cherish the solo shows for a very long time..... I thought he would roll out Neil Young but went way over my expectations. Put on the Neil Young Massey Hall 1971 CD Wednesday afternoon to listen too and boy was that a set up for this show...Liam Finn was amazing as well....lots of talent there!!!!!
Thanks again for just being you Ed and good luck working on the next Album!!!!!
Peace,

I took in this show from the 11th row and at 5'2" felt pretty lucky that we were seated most of the time because it still allowed me a great view.
I didn’t find out until I got on the forums later that the front row was full of people who were given seat upgrades. That is so awesome. Even though I wasn’t chosen, it feels good to know that Ed wanted me up there. Very nice gesture. I wonder what they did with those people’s original seats?
Here are a few moments I can remember in no particular order:
When Ed had to turn around and adjust his pants after the first few songs, he called it a wardrobe malfunction.
Ed mentioned that he had paddled a boat out to Toronto Island and they visited a bird sanctuary. He said that the view of Toronto from the water reminded him of the view of Seattle from the water. He thought our phallic monument was bigger than theirs, but that theirs was cleaner.
After Masters of War, Ed said it was ridiculous that he had to apologize for speaking his mind even though he has researched a subject. He told us a story about a time in Florida or Texas he gave the audience a multiple choice question about the reasons for going to war. Do you agree with the Bush administration’s reasons for invading Iraq? No, (he goes on to explain that) or yes, I’m an idiot. The funny thing is that he actually gave us that survey in Toronto at the Molson Amphitheatre. A few people shouted that out, but he didn't seem to pick up on it.
He talked about the West Memphis Three and how it would be great if we would show some international support. He said he had visited them in jail and could swear on us, on music and on his daughter than they were innocent. Then he introduced Dead Man Walking by saying unfortunately this is a song about someone who is guilty although it’s still a sad story.
He introduced several songs both nights by saying “This… is a song.”
Ed again said that it was an honor to be playing at Massey Hall and that the bootleg of Neil Young Live at Massey Hall was one of the best. He said that Neil had really helped the band out when they were at a crossroads and when he thanked Neil for all that he had taught them, Neil said “Well good. Maybe you can teach it back to me someday.”
That was good, I was actually a bit disappointed when he stopped, lol, but he ended up playing it later anyway so it's all good.
So, after the show, did anyone else wait outside the venue for a very long time after? There were like 40 of you, show yourselves...:)
We should make "forums.pearljam.com member name: [insert name here]" t-shirts and wear them to shows. Except maybe not the AMT folks...they might start fistfights.
Were the 10C tickets truly random? I had basically the same seats both nights, and saw the same people ahead of me both nights and the same people behind me both nights.

the anticipation of what he was going to play with ej and then to hear those first few bars of helpless - it was like opening a present x 1,000!!

.............PLEASE!
Cheers to Eddie for a great show, and thanks to those who have posted videos online.
exactly.
he is a beautiful human being.

So, after the show, did anyone else wait outside the venue for a very long time after? There were like 40 of you, show yourselves...:)
We should make "forums.pearljam.com member name: [insert name here]" t-shirts and wear them to shows. Except maybe not the AMT folks...they might start fistfights.
