I'll still take the NIN version anyday over Cashs' version
  • can someone send me a copy?
  • Some people around here just need to fucking relax when it comes to someone posting an "illegal" link. It's just someone trying to share some great music w. everybody else. If it gets taken down, it gets taken down. It will be popping up again somewhere else........

Was it illegal when the taping equipment was snuck in.Bootlegging shows has been going on before Eddie sang his 1st note. Those that want to share kudo's to them. It's against policy here, which is fine I understand that. With internet axis to downloading shows it has become much simpler than 15-20 years ago.As I've said before, some people here have a lot to learn, including me.I'm of the old school.I got it you want its yours.
The bus came by and I got on!!!!!

Trent wrote it, but he had this to say about Johnny Cash's cover of it:

"I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure." --Alternative Press #194, Sept. 2004

Nothing beats NIN´s version. not even Cash , much less ed´s

I agree. I liked Ed´s version, but to me the other 2 are superior, with NIN coming in first place.

not sure which is better. not having heard Ed but interpretation by Cash held a lot of meaning given what we know about his personal life.

Seemed to ring true for him.

  • trents version is still the best. this is one of the few times eddie/pj covers dont come close to the original.

i also dont think much of cash's version either. id probably put vedder's slightly ahead of cash's, but its miles away from trents.

to quote eddie himself, 'close but no sitar'
  • This is how I see it:

Reznor's version: Angry. For proof, listen to the tone in his voice when he hits the "And you can have it all..." part of the song. It's almost snarling. Also, the abnormally loud jump in sound at the end of the song seems to coincide with anger more than any other emotion.

Cash's version: Heartbreaking. In the context of what was going on in his life at the time he covered the song, this is pretty self-explanatory.

Vedder's version: A tribute. He's not trying to reinvent the song or tie it to his own emotions, but rather just to pay tribute to its writer (Reznor) and the man who brought it back in the public eye (Cash).

Which is the best version is obviously debatable, but I tend to favor the original (Reznor's). The reasons are mainly personal...I tie it to a time in my life when I was confused, naive, and angry almost daily.

But all three are great. :)

It said "Life is nothing but a dream."
I've spent so many years in question
To find I'd known this all along.

  • That is beyond awesome.

  • Lack of respect for Johnny and Trenty...get your drivers license first and we'll talk. Funny post haha...love both Trent and Johnny's version, brings tears always...especially Johnnys

He and Elvis, and so many others brought life to rock and roll in the 50s, 60s...you do not have any prospective. PJ and "Grunge" would not exist.

    Kermit...shit

Ed can't touch either...but cool he gave it a decent shot...not enough REAL emotion...which both Trent and Johnny had at the time.
  • Sounds a bit sloppy/unemotional or whatever... too bad he sings the cash version and not Trents. (crown of thorns vs crown of shit)

Would like Pj to rock the shit out of Hand that Feed, Wish or Heresey.

after that version of hurt i think pj should stay away from nin tunes. its bad enough cash and eddie had to do that to hurt, i dont want to hear pj ruin anything else, especially since they usually do a fantastic job with covers. nin just isnt in pj style of music, its kinda crazy to say but they are just too different it seems.
  • For lack of a more intelligent or proper response, that is fucking bad ass

man, I'd love to hear the rest of that show...
  • Can someone please send me ship song from the auditorium theatre show?

    thanks!!!
  • wow, thank you so much for posting this... I almost died when I saw he covered it.

I have always preferred Cash's version to Trent's, I just feel that is more how the song should sound... ironic as it's Trent's song. It's one of my favorite covers of all time and I was not let down with Ed's version.

    Such an incredibly powerful song.

Ed's version kicks all kind of ass. It's funny how Edward Vedder dominates all others and makes a song 144 times better.

no, it was just a violation of the revocable license the person agreed to when they walked through the door with the ticket, definitly not illegal...
  • It's good but I prefer Cash's version most.
