I am humbled by the knowledge here but I will state the obvious ones. Iron Maiden and Radiohead, this side of the Atlantic, active bands in 90's who are still putting out admirable music..
What's your part, who you are?

    2012: Arras, Berlin 1-2
    2013: Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires
    2014: Milano, Trieste, Vienna, Berlin
    2016: NY MSG 1

Look into a guy called Greg Dulli. His main projects are the Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers, and a duo he formed with Mark Lanegan called the Gutter Twins.

I suggest starting with the Afghan Whigs album 1965, if you like that, you are going to love everything he has done. It's the sexiest, seediest rock album ever made, in my opinion. If you don't want to try the whole album just listen to the song Something Hot:

Great suggestion, but I'd argue Black Love is the place to start, it's just that litlle bit darker!

Yes you are right it is, I suggested 1965 though because I think it's probably a bit more immediately accessible to a new listener. Black Love is a terrific album though.

    The Mark Lanegan Band.

It's more blues than anything else, but I can't recommend it enough, just great stuff.

I was actually looking at the Kyuss Lives newly incarnated Vista Chino and saw they had a new album dropping!!!! I cannot wait! First song is on their Facebook also.

Second, I was looking at attending their Minnesota show and that led me to finding The Lone Crows. I think the QOTSA/Kyuss people will like this band. Only one album, but I'm completely gonna pick it up!

  • I copied and pasted this from the Gaslight Anthem thread, as they were suggested to me, but I didn't enjoy them. I'm hoping that one or more of 'the 3 B bands below' turns out to be keepers on my ipod...

(After the Gaslight Anthem dissapointment)...Instead of going through the time to reserve, download and listen to unknown commodities, now I just check out suggestions on on youtube first...and of all the bands multiple people suggested, Black Angels, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Band of Horses seemed to pass the first test.

Sorry...but I'm 40 years old and grew up on the big four Seattle bands, so I am still very picky about newer music (the jury is still out on My Morning Jacket, but I will give them another try).

I'm sure Gaslight Anthem is a fine band...for many people out there...but too soft for me.

QOTSA, Black Keys, Walking Papers, Muse...those are my top active post grunge era faves so far...but need to add more!!!

  • Hi OP, I'm a child of the 90's too - aged 14 to 24 during the decade - and I find most of my new tunes on the short.fast.loud radio program (you can follow on F/B and twitter). Good luck in your search :)

Hi. Thanks, I'll have to check that out.

Update on the latest 3 suggested bands that made it past my quick youtube filter and into my ipod...

Band of Horses: Nah...not hard enough. Seems like a decent band if you're into that style though.

The Black Angels: YES! Listening to The Passover right now and very good! They are keepers for sure!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: NOW THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!! Listened to Devil's Tattoo this weekend and it was like I gave birth to a child...overcome with instant joy and love at this wonderful 'new' thing in my life. I was grinning ear to ear and absolutely loved the album. So to recap...

Favorite 'new' (>2000 debut) bands who secured a spot on my ipod for eternity...

    The Walking Papers
    The Black Angels
    Black Rebel Motorcylce Club

Missed 'my mark' and will be deleted from my ipod...

    Gaslight Anthem
    Band of Horses

Not sure, but keeping on my ipod for now to try more albums...

    My Morning Jacket

Thanks again all and keep the suggestions coming if they are like any of the above four keepers!

    Have you tried The Sword?

They are a little heavier then a lot of what you have listed but they rock hard. Gods of the Earth is my fav

along those lines give the latest Baroness album a listen. Yellow and Green

Here is a song by them:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZKPpeuHvJk

I'd stay away from their earlier albums as they may be too metal, but they adjusted their sound now and i think they are much closer to hard rock (soundgarden/aic ish)

Yes, I found them (and The Hives and The Vines) years ago when the whole White Stripes lead garage rock movement started picking up. I need to get up to date on their newer albums though, as the above three bands were decent.

I tell you what...after hearing/seeing one Band of Skulls song on Palladium a while back, I finally got one of their two albums (Baby Darling Doll Face Honey), and they are very good! Very similiar to The White Stripes!

And after not being overly impressed with My Morning Jacket's Z and TN Waltz albums, I've got 3 of their other 4 albums coming via library transfer, so after this I'll know for sure if they are worthy of real estate on my iPod or not.

OP, read through this thread and my first reaction to recommend to you is Seether. Surprised no one else recommended them. South African band with a MAJOR Nirvana influence and they also do an awesome cover of PJ's Immortality. To me they are the closest band to the 90's "grunge" sound.
You've probably heard their biggest hit called "broken," but they have many more great songs. My five favourites are:
tonight, rememdy, rise above this, fake it and fine again

  • How about JEFF the Brotherhood. Although the first thing that sprang to mind when I heard them was blue-album Weezer, they are more fuzzed out and heavier. Still really poppy though.

I didn't think the last 2 strokes albums were that great compared to the first 3 - but don't let that change your mind about listening to them anyway.

I would suggest rather than looking for new music that you look for bands you may have missed the first time around.

There are loads of good bands from the 90s that didn't get the coverage they might have thanks to the quantity of good music and there are some you may just have missed.

    Have you heard these:

    Hum
    Helmet
    Quicksand
    Refused
    Lemonheads
    Incubus
    Eels
    Filter
    Blind Melon
    Unified Theory
    Reef
    Silverchair
    Terrorvision
    Gomez
    Longpigs
    3 Colours Red
    The Crocketts
    Llama Farmers
    Radish
    Prick
    Clutch
    Spacehog
    Local H

Give any of those you haven't heard a spin.

Local H is the 1st band I thought of when I started scrolling through this post.

    Local H are alright.

As Good As Dead is the album to start with.

Lovey Dovey and No Problem are my favourite tunes.

Lovey Dovey is quite Nirvana-esque, while No Problem sounds like Pearl Jam going into Smashing Pumpkins.

There are several better bands than them on the list though.

    Another good canadian band...
Monster Truck, they are rather new but fantastic. Went to a show where they opened and never seen the type of response for a band opening, seriously people just looking around bewildered like "where the fuck did these guys come from?" and the whole crowd chanting for them to come back out for an encore rather than cheering for the headliners to start. i really got a good Zeppelin meets Soundgarden vibe from them. They released an album called furiosity earlier this year, i havent gotten a single negative response from people ive spun it for.

Seriously though, they're a decent band but it's nothing new or particularly interesting.

The singer isn't great and the music is rather repetitive.

Still, they're far better than most modern bands.

The best new band of recent times is Mammal for me. No contest.
  • *** OP Update ***

Just finished the My Morning Jacket discograpgy (except 'It Still Moves')...I couldn't get into any of their stuff. There were a few moments early on in Circuital, but then they lost me again. I have the Okonokos album in transit from the library, but if I didn't like any of their studio albums, I don't think I will like that one either.

I will try to look into as many of these suggestions (if there is at least two shout outs for a band) as possible, but this will take years!

Good stuff though. Thanks again to all for trying to broaden my grunge horizons.

Still in the lead as my new favorite band, The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. What an amaing find there!

I have a favor though...I've been able to rent (library) or buy (Amazon) all of their released music besides the Howl Sessions EP. It's available to purchase on their website WITH Howl, but I don't want to buy Howl twice.

I haven't looked on iTunes yet, but doubt it is available as I can't even buy it from Amzaon (not counting vinyl).

Anybody have an inside track for me to be able to acquire this EP, as well as the bonus songs from BRMC, Devil's Tattoo, and Specter? Trying to complete my BRMC discography! Thanks.

I like the first BRMC album, but they lost me after that.

I saw them at Reading Festival in 2002 and 2003.

  • Pelican - Their first Ep and Australasia are heavy, all instrumental post grunge masterpieces.
  • Further, an old but great, seldom heard grunge masterwork is Seaweed's album Four. You can hear the influence on the Yield album imo!

I recommend that you check out a Swedish band called Witchcraft. They have a great sound and may be heavy enough for your taste.
