'New' Music Suggestions from/for a 'Grunge' Die-Hard???

Hey. So I went to college from 91-95, just in time for Nevermind to come out, so I can't help but be smitten by 'the big four' of PJ, AIC, SG, and Nirvana.

I am not an 'early adopter' and tend to not discover (or invest in) new music/tv shows, until they are well proven commodities (why take a chance a TV series, etc. if it will end up being a bust?).

I have not discovered too many post mid-90's bands, who are currently still together (so The White Stripes don't count), who I am in love with.

The closest I've got to a non 'big four' love affair has been The Queens of The Stone Age. I absolutely love them and hate that I just spent so much on PJ tickets that I can't justify seeing them in LA this Saturday.

Anyway...besides them (and besides The Black Keys who I also really like), are there any fellow 'big four'/grunge lovers like myself who tend to still listen to mostly the same bands from the early 90's...who have discovered a couple 'new' gems (like QOTSA, etc.) that could make a suggestion for me to check out???

Much appreciated!

  • I was in college from 93-98 so I can relate. I still listen to a ton of early 90's stuff.
Check out Scott Lucas and the Married Men - specifically the album Blood Half Moon. Scott Lucas is the lead singer of Local H....remember them? They're still around too making albums, this is his other band now. Very different than Local H. I discovered them back in December of last year and have been listening to them a lot since

My Morning Jacket is another band worth checking out if you havent already.

We might be brothers one year apart. I was '90-'94 at college (you took some 12 credit semesters, too, eh? )

Same way as you with music until my daughters, who are now teenagers, started really getting into music that was big when I was in college. I also really like QOSTA and The Black Keys. I had a summer job at SPAC from 90 to 92 and got to see a lot of the grunge bands early on but was a bit jaded/spoiled with live music because of the job... was always a Zeppelin, Doors, Who kind of fan who couldn't appreciate the newer music right away...

I've seen several "newer" bands just recently, so I'll suggest Walking Papers, Dead Daisies, Circa Survive and Coheed and Cambria. The last two bands have singers with higher voices, but they sure seemed talented musically. Really liked the Walking Papers, whose studio album is good but live act is great. Of the four I just listed they are my faves so far.

Yeah man. I primarily listen to the same shit I listened to when I was a teen, the Seattle sound and bands that were puttin out hits around the early 90's. I like Metallica and the Chili Peppers who still tour and put out new music. Tool is a great band but don't hardly ever release any new music. Check out Band of Horses who opened for Pearl Jam a couple years ago. Thats how I got into them and they are great (even better live. *hint, hint*) But yeah, kinda like you, apprehensive about jumping in with both feet when it comes to new music. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

There were a lot of great Canadian bands around during the early 90's that didn't get alot if any airplay in the US.

Try this band .. I Mother Earth they are amazing, best album would be "scenery and fish" (my fav next to big 4)
Also try their album "dig", and maybe "quicksilver meat dream"

They just recently got back together, tell me what you think!!

Yes, we may be related. ;)

You must have read my post in the Coheed and Cambria thread. :D I'm actually going to the UPROAR festival in SD on 9/15 with AIC, Jane's Addiction, C&C, Circa Survive all on the main stage...and Walking Papers and Dead Daisies headlining the two side stages. I checked out some links and did a little youtube searching and yes, I agree...Walking Papers look like the cream of the crop there (and I was happy to see they've got Barrett Martin and Duff McKagan on board!). Daisies sounded decent...but yeah, the other two bands I'm not sure about...if my lead singer's voice is too high pitched (don't get me wrong, I appreciate what dude from QOTSA can do when he wants to) then that turns me off.

Thank you all though and keep them coming! My goal is to 'discover' (and love) one new band between now and the show! I will try to check out some MMJ too!

  • I won't repeat what's already been said.

    I'd check out:
    Gaslight Anthem & Horrible Crowes

It's hard to find new bands with that type of good sound.

I've been backfilling my catalog of music I missed in the Eighties. College Rock style i.e Replacements, Black Flag, Joe Strummer, etc . .

Thats right! I think you'll enjoy the Uproar Fest... you said you had pit tickets, right? Unless the venue in SD is a lot different from our east coast sheds there should be a very small pit with plenty of room in the back. I'd recommend making sure you see Walking Papers before you head into the pit. If you've gotta have the rail it shouldn't be an issue either... there wasn't a huge line in Scranton and my daughters and I only had to wait for an hour or so to get a spot in front of Jerry Cantrell. The schedule on the Uproar site is pretty accurate so that should help with planning the day.

They're pretty good. Think a fuzzed out garage rockier White Stripes. Both albums by them are pretty cool.

Nobody gives Nickelback a listen. Nickelback just takes them.

Silversun Pickups get a lot of comparisons to Smashing Pumpkins, and are one of the few newer hard-rock-ish bands I've gotten into in recent years.

Look into a guy called Greg Dulli. His main projects are the Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers, and a duo he formed with Mark Lanegan called the Gutter Twins.

I suggest starting with the Afghan Whigs album 1965, if you like that, you are going to love everything he has done. It's the sexiest, seediest rock album ever made, in my opinion. If you don't want to try the whole album just listen to the song Something Hot:

Saw them for the first time in May, Kick Ass group!
  • I second the dude who said I Mother Earth. They are incredible. After Scenery and Fish, they switched to a new singer, and rarely does a band not only survive, but re-invent themselves to the point of being just as good or better, but they did it with Quicksilver Meat Dream. Epic album. But all 3 of their albums are well worth the listen.

I listen to a lot of Cage The Elephant. I don't find them similar to Nirvana, but I get the same vibe from them, in that I find them "authentic".

Also, a Canadian band called Dearly Beloved. Someone else mentioned Silversun Pickups, and while I was really grabbed by them in the beginning, all of their stuff to me sounds virtually the same. The comparison to the Pumpkins is fair only if you are comparing them to Gish-era. Pumpkins evolved, SSPU have not.

I'm also a big, HUGE, fan of a band called The Headstones. I'm a little biased though (the lead singer's name is Hugh Dillon).
