I actually haven't thought about this much (no need, I suppose?), but I too find it interesting. I'd also go to what HFD mentioned about circumstance. If you're surrounded by or living among a primarily predominant group of people, chances are you'll interact or become friends with them (ie, not necessarily snubbing those of another race).

We have Chinese, Lebanese, Aboriginal, German, Greek and African friends and my husband and I are white. To us they are just another Aussie friend, we don't tend to define them in that way.

Yeah this is true. We have just encountered certain people and made friends. It's not like we have a friend checklist of races to tick off when we become friends with them, it's just how it happened.

But seriously, this is a good point. Here's one distinction found through lazy-bones Goggling:

The traditional definition of race and ethnicity is related to biological and sociological factors respectively. Race refers to a person's physical appearance, such as skin color, eye color, hair color, bone/jaw structure etc. Ethnicity, on the other hand, relates to cultural factors such as nationality, culture, ancestry, language and beliefs.

asking why they don't have friends outside their race would have been a helpful statistic to add to this. 25% non-white and 40% white is an interesting number.



I would like to see a list of how many American's have friends across different income strata, that would tell me more about how integrated we are as a society than race. And I would suspect it would be not very at all


It would be nice to not see the world as large groups where the only connection is a little biology.

I have no friends who are not classified as white...that being said, I only have four friends.

these four people I trust.
these four people manage their income.
these four people share many goals.

I have many acquaintainces...I do not trust the many, and many of them do not manage their income.

a friend is rare.

I agree with you.....it all an agenda.....why was this "study" even done if there is no agenda. People have the right to have friends of their choice. I agree with you Beavers.. I find it interesting too because a lot of it depends on where you are. I had a lot of black friends when I was in high school in south florida. But when I moved to north Florida for college, the diversity was overwhelming. And we all had things in common which made it easier to mingle.. It was much easier for me to make friends of diverse ethnicities in college. But now being back in south florida, I think each ethnicity is guilty of keeping to themselves to some degree...mostly because in south florida, people are very divided in may ways.

I'm sorry white and black are colours. I didn't notice words like Chinese, Indian, Korean, Iraqi, Jewish, then it would be a story worth posting.

Edit: So a tanned Italian friend who dosen't consider themselves white would be what in this story? etc, etc...
