A new poll on whether American relationships are segregated found 40 percent of whites and 25 percent of non-whites do not have any close friends of other races.
The online Reuters/Ipsos poll also found that 20 percent of whites said they had five or more close friends of different races; 36 percent of non-whites said the same. Hispanics were the most likely to have a diverse friendship network.
Camille Zubrinsky Charles, a professor of sociology and Africana studies at the University of Pennsylvania, said the divide was not surprising given the racial makeup of the nation's communities.
"There has been some progress, but whites and blacks in particular still tend to live in separate neighborhoods," she said.


Younger Americans were more likely to say they have friends — or romances — outside their own racial group, the pollsters found.
Some 25 percent of people under the age of 30 who have a spouse or partner said their significant other was of another race, in contrast to only 13 percent of those over the age of 40.
Geographically, the Pacific states had the most diverse relationships while the South had the least.

    Do what homework? It's a simple question you either have friends or none at all outside of your race. What the hell does this question have to do with the President?

    In his song, "Women", Lou Reed sings "what a nightmare to have no women in the world". I feel the same way about race- what a nightmare to have nothing but one race of people. And how boring!

    My god-children are half Cuban. I love that! I have friends who are of several races, from many different places. They enrich my life.

    And my cat is black. We get down!

    When I lived in San Francisco I loved the intermingling of races- at school, in the dorms, at work. But now for the last several years I've been living in a small city in the foothills that is much less racially diverse and it's one of the less attractive aspects of this town as far as I'm concerned. Fortunately, that is slowly changing. And Sacramento is my closest city and it is very diverse.

    I don't have any close friends of another "pure" race. and it's not out of choice. it's just circumstance. I had one black friend a while back, but he moved to Calgary and we lost touch.

    my neighbours are black, and we get along great, but that's it, just neighbourly.

    Having been born in this melting-pot of LA and living here my entire life, my friendships (the true ones) have run the gamut of races, religions and the like.

    For me, they just ARE...or were.

    Like any valued relationship, not forced, not hidden, not flaunted. They're not notches on my belt for presentation to anyone else (not saying that's how the article was presented, but sometimes I'm flabbergasted by people's need for..."justification").

    For the record, my guy grew up in Ohio and can say (in fact just DID say) the exact same thing.

    People really aren't all that different.

    I agree with you.....it all an agenda.....why was this "study" even done if there is no agenda. People have the right to have friends of their choice. How can anyone not have friends of another ethnicity unless they have no friends. What is the point of this post....Are we keeping score here? What a waste of time. I hope the taxpayers did not pay for this "study".

    You guys don't think about this stuff? I think it's interesting. I think it suggests that despite society being more integrated, in our smaller circles, a good amount people tend to still be segregated.
