Watch many news channels, read many articles, weight the facts, determine what you think is "truth" but in the end know that you still don't have the truth.

If you go to a website where all they do is bash Obama or a site that is always positive of Obama, you know those sites are not great. They are totally biased. I say this because most sources people give on here talking bad of Obama are sites where that is all they do. It is biased, obviously. Sites that have numerous articles about the positives and negatives is better than just one-sided. But in no way am I saying those are good sites either.

What sites have numerous articles about the positives and negatives?

I've only seen like one or two in my life. It had pros and cons of Obama, Congress, etc. It was a few years ago and I found it randomly while working on a paper for school. But I doubt there are many sites like that.

  • Oddly enough, the most un-biased and fact-based site that discusses stuff is Cracked.com

There is no best news source. You have to be your own.

I was just going to say I make it up as I go.

Seriously though, none is a good answer. I look at several- Huffington Post, BBC News, Yahoo News, CNN, Common Dreams, MSNBC, Democracy Now among others and hope I'm getting a vague notion of what is going on. Like Lou Reed said, "You can't believe half of what you see and none of what you hear."

Another good idea is to get out and look around. Climate change? Feel it. Smell it. Same with species decline and social unrest and economics. I'm serious. Look around, use all your senses, talk to people, go outside and get outside yourself. That's where it's going on.

The internet is your oyster. Don't limit yourself to the 'big' news agencies. Also check out international ones - see the stories in different lights. Get varying perspectives and make your own conclusions.

What about NPR? Not a typical 30 second news update and then on to the next 30 second story. However, I think they do a good job of interviewing experts on both sides of an issue. I, on very rare occasions, have heard the on air talent seem to lean to one side of the issue but they are very respectful of their guests. I rarely listen to any of the 24 hour news stations but do depend on the internet to fill me in on quick stories. I find the 30 second-1 minute story annoying because they aren't telling you WHAT happened they are telling you HOW to interpret what happened.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

yes!! I really like Diane Rehm's show.

The other thing is for a certain topic , amny of the days separate shows will cover it, which may seem like overkill but provides for varied points of view from the hosts to the guest on any particular topic.

Funny that you mention her show because she is the very one I was thinking of when I wrote this post. I was listening to her Friday roundup, international and they were discussing Edward Snowden. A caller made a remark about Arkansas and oil disasters and she very kindly but definitively said thanks for the call but this is international hour and your comment is more appropriate for the domestic hour. But proceeded to inform everyone else that it was an important topic that had been and would continue to be covered in the future. Certainly don't see that on CNN or MSNBC or Fox!

Glad to see some others that love them some NPR 8-)

NPR is normally my go-to. They tend to get tunnel-visioned on topics for what seems like weeks at a time (at least in the segments that are on-air during my commute), but within a given topic you are at least left with a sense of balance. They aren't w/o their flaws and, when in doubt, do lean left, but to me at least it's a very minor lilt.

I read The Atlantic everyday but they do lean heavily to the left. I have yet to find an unbiased news source. Sometimes you have to hear both sides of the story and decide for yourself.
I've been fortunate enough to see Pearl Jam live.

I'm looking for news. Facts....not opinion. I can form my own opinions.

That's why I listed the Newsbreaker twitter account. I just want the details and no spin.

factual is very subjective ... most news agencies will report "facts" ... it's just a matter of spin and extra stuff that's added that is usually the problem ...

the problem isn't necessarily the news agencies ... it's the inability for some of the public to actually dissect the information .. .

    This is a good question
On a normal day I read the Washington Post, NY Times, and WSJ
But a lot of my news and info comes from NPR and PBS newshour

When I want more detailed background information I go to friends and family who have personal and professional experience and knowledge in the subject at hand. It could be govt issues, international relations, justice, defense, medicine, sports, and even entertainment.

Getting information from someone directly involved is better than a 2nd or even 3rd hand press account.

    Good stuff, right here.

And NPR does have a bias. I found that out when doing research about the H1N1 scare years ago. They were blatenly biased toward everyone getting the vaccine.
