For my money it is not the scarcity of the song that makes it sacred, but rather its content, lyrical meaning to people

Breath is sacred due to its lyrical content
    Same with deep
    Same with Hard to Imagine
    Same with Wash

Crown of Thorns is in a different category - that shit is lyrical content AND band history.

None of us own the songs - the songs' authors own the songs, and they will play them when they like

We are the band's followers and are blessed that sacred songs are played IN EVERY SINGLE Pearl Jam show

    Peace brothers, and out

I know what you are saying about Breath. I think it's still special when it's played.

Funny thing about this song, the guy I took to the Philly show in '00 when they broke it out has been to 5 shows with me. They've played Breath at all 5 of his shows

We talked after Wrigley (he didn't go)... He says "they knew I wasn't there, they didn't play Breath for you".

Funny, I just checked the song lyrics page... I've been lucky enough to hear it at three shows

    Philly 9/30/09
    MSG 10/21/10
    Alpine Valley 9/3/11

Since 2009 they've played it at 50% of the shows I attended (other 3 shows I saw since '09 were MIA, PJ20 2, Wrigley)

there is one song that, in my mind, when played you can almost guarantee the whole show is special:

    Immortality
Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"

i dont think you will find someone thast will disagree with this!

  • Especially in more recent years I would add Sleight of Hand to that list. Absolutely amazing song that is played very rarely recently. It hasn't been played at all since the band messed it up during the Montreal concert in 2011. I hope they aren't afraid of playing it now :?
1st and only show so far:

Hard To Imagine could possibly be thrown in that discussion.

How sick would it be if they came out and opened an encore with Hard To Imagine, followed by Breath and then Deep?

We'd all be completely slayed. I can only imagine how I'd feel after that show!

I only have a list of 3 songs I've never heard PJ play that I really want to hear live (Sonic Reducer, Breath, and Oceans).

The Vancouver/Seattle shows are my usuals (as I live on Vancouver Island which is a pretty similar distance to both those cities), but I spent a few years living in Alberta. That's when the 09 tour happened. When they announced it there was no Vancouver show, so we planned everything out with the Seattle shows. After the hotels were booked and airplane tickets booked, they announced Vancouver. If I put in some serious effort I could of made the show, but I didn't.

They played Breath. The one Vancouver show I miss in 15 years and they played it. It bugged me a lot of have missed that show...... I remember by heart sank when I read the setlist.

Question for the masses that might know...

When did Stone ever start and then stop using a wireless system on his guitar? (see 4:35 of above). This is the first video I've ever noticed Stone using anything but a long cable.

Haha, felt that way when (but not as "severe" as you I guess) when they played in in Pistoia and I've been too the 2 shows preceding it. :)

  • I was lucky enough to hear Breath in Las Vegas 2003 which seemed an odd place to hear such a rare song. I also got Crown of Thorns and Hard to Imagine at back to back shows in 2006 (LA 1 and Santa Barbara).

My holy grail song would be Wash and believe it or not I've never heard Hail Hail. I've also only gotten one Animal. So in Oakland I would love a Wash, Animal, Hail Hail, 1-2-3 to open the show.

i hope one day,all will realise, how powerfull is Wash as opener and what dynamic gives toi the show and to the next song of the set, thats why the next song, always is fuckin fast..and boys rock out like crazy..
from the moment they start open with wash, after 96(they played most in the set and not as opener the previous years,) Last exit-Animal-hail hail-go-why go..is the songs usually follows as second songs..
its my favo slow opener by far..not to mention the 2 times i saw it,the shows was unreal

    ps..check Bridge school 94 version.,.,is so different

I really shouldn't complain all that much. The only show that happened in Alberta while I lived there was the Virgin Music Festival in 2009. Drove from Edmonton to Calgary to see it (in fact its the only time I've ever seen PJ where I got to go home right after the show). They played Brother at that show which I think is a pretty rare song to see live.

I think it's get harder and harder to see your rare favorites live. The PJ song catalog continues to grow. They must have over 200 songs when you add up the albums, b-sides, soundtrack songs, rarities, and covers. They play about 30 on an average night. Odds aren't in your favour.... but damn does it feel good when they play one :)

Well, this thread was not really about rare songs per-se or the songs you've seen or not seen. But how Breath is viewed etc. the topic and discussion was meant as something a little bit different I guess.

I think Breath will always be a rare and badass song. Am I right that this song used to be slower (even after the title changed from "Breath and a Scream" to "Breath")? When did the much-more-awesome quick version start getting played?
