Totally love old uk punk. Rudimentary Peni, Crass, GBH, Discharge, etc. Probably my fav from that era has got to be the Subhumans though and actually anything that Dick Lucas has done. Citizen Fish and Culture Shock both rule too. Just seen Subhumans and The Adolescents here in Brooklyn a few weeks ago and they still kick so much ass live. I have nothing but love for american punk and hardcore too. Been really into The Dicks and Big Boys lately. Had to pass on seeing Black Flag when they came threw town. Fuck Greg Ginn. I would be tempted to see FLAG tho.,,

Dick Lucas is one of the greatest human beings to walk the planet. That man has produced some of the most brilliant music of my lifetime. I met him a few times (mainly at Citizen Fish shows, because he is impossible to talk to at Subhumans shows, at least as far as I could see). We had good conversations about everything from politics (of course) to food. He is so fuckin sweet and cool. Gave me a big kiss on the cheek last time and said "love ya darlin." Never thought I'd get a kiss from Dick Lucas. ;)

My fave CF record is probably Millennia Madness, with Can't Complain being my favorite song. As far as the Subhumans, pretty much anything they've spit out is pure gold.

I'm interested in seeing FLAG too. Have you checked out Keith Morris' band OFF!?

Yeah i've spoken with Dick several times at various shows he's been playing and he indeed is a gent. OFF! rules seen them a couple times once in Seattle and once in NYC. Great band for sure!

I've been a Pearl Jam fan since I was 13 years old (roughly the span of their career). However, Pearl Jam is pretty much the only "mainstream" band I listen to. Most of my friends are appalled that I am so in love with them. I've always been a punk fan, my second show ever was a hardcore show at the Metro in Chicago. I've been into indie garage-y punk forever...and a lot of the bands that have toured with Pearl Jam in the past (Murder City Devils, Sleater-Kinney) were favorites of mine long before they went on the road with them. That is sometimes my defense to friends, "but look at all the bands they tour with? they're awesome! they toured with the Buzzcocks for crying out loud!!" My friends (and especially my husband) are so confused by my taste.

I have searched high and low for other Pearl Jam fans who suffer my same dilemma. Most of the fans I've met are wonderful but...they also like DMB and other commercial bands. I can't relate to them on any music level other than Pearl Jam (which is fine but...). Most of them have never heard of the Subhumans or The Coachwhips. Most of them didn't spend their teens going to insane all-ages shows like Fugazi and Bratmobile.

I'd love to find another PJ friend who has similar taste in other music besides our favorite band. I'd love to find a fellow PJ fan who wants to go see Ty Segall with me and reminisce about the days when you saw 10 different lives bands in one week.

    Anyone? :(
What was the hardcore show you saw at the Metro?

Lol, obviously I haven't been on this forum in awhile since I'm just now replying to this! I think it was Rupture that I last saw at the Metro in the 90's. Maybe. I would have to look back at the bookings to remember. That's another thing I love doing is going back through archives...it manages to pull memories out of this forgetful head of mine all the time!

    What a cool resurrected thread!

Besides old hardcore like Minor Threat and the misfits and the Meatmen,I really like these bands:

Thee Oh Sees, saw them 3 times now and went in the pit and I'm 40. Best live band out there.

Ty Segall who I've also seen. Great show.

Damaged Bug, COach whips, Warm soda, you know all the Castleface bands.

Holy shit! Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees -- they all got me in the pit again too and I'm 38! I love love love some of the newer bands coming out. FIDLAR is another fave, as is Parquet Courts. Wow, a fellow PJ fan who likes this stuff too. I am truly amazed. Seriously.

Also, don't want to leave out my fellow ladies The Coathangers. Also like the Growlers.

Growing up I fell in love with Bad Religion, Descendents, Screeching Weasel, NOFX, Lagwagon, Propagandhi and basically all of the Epitaph/Lookout!/Fat Wreck catalogs. Minutemen, Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr., all that great SST shit. Gorilla Biscuits are one of my favorites.

Most recent fave, hands down, is Fucked Up.

I was more of a Wipers, Dead Moon, Ramones and Talking Heads.

I grew up listening to punk from the late 70's-80's. I obviously like the Germs. Also the Adolescents, Cheifs(they spell it wrong), the Clash, Shattered Faith, TSOL, the Damned, the Crowd, early Social Distortion, Dead Boys, etc. I wrote an actual letter to Crass and after 6 months I was surprised to get a letter back. Anyone interested in old punk rock should check out the Hostage Records label. They specialize in mostly releasing O.C. classic style punk. They just released a new Shattered Faith album and it's great. Their prices are at a true DIY punk rock level. Just shows you can release a record and sell it for cheap. hostagerecords.com/hostage_records/HOME.html

I found a great condition copy of that Adolescents LP in a thrift store last year for 50 cents. Great stuff!

Here's another most punk fans will want to check out:

That is a tough one. Most of the "punk" bands I see these days are new punk, which can be argued that it's not "real" punk. It would be easier to remember the good classic punk shows I've seen throughout the decades.

All great records. The Adolescents record caused my parents to take away my records because I was going around the house singing "I Hate Children". Then they found my Dead Kennedys record and talked with the asshole cop neighbor and he told them to throw them all away. Cool thing is that my dad kept them and I found them when I was helping him move. Also, the singer of the the Adolescents later became a teacher and so did I.

Love this band. Can't believe how much music they keep putting out, and it's all awesome. Agree with you on Ty as well, check out video of his recent KEXP session, it was....something else.

Gotta love all the recommendations in this thread. I miss that old spirit of punk that I feel no one is doing any more. Any new punk out there for fans of bands like Off!?

Some other stuff I dig: metz, wavves, pavement, the spits, lawrence arms, NOFX, superchunk, leatherface, hot water music, jay reatard.

Jay was a violent force. I got to see the Reatards, Tokyo Electron, and Angry Angles at a tiny club in San Francisco. We were right up front and Jay was getting pissed about something. He ended up smashing a glass on the stage and I don't know how I didn't get it in my eye. Then he grabbed my wife's purse and put it around his neck during a song. I'm surprised my wife didn't get up there and kick his ass. It was total chaos and unforgettable. We later drank and smoked cigarettes with the band. Also found a photographer online who actually took a picture of Jay with my wife's purse around his neck. It hangs proudly in the music room of our house.

Totally love my punk music, The Clash I would rate in my top 5 bands ever, true pioneers that just didn't give a fuck. The Buzzcocks too, saw them here in Auckland about 3 weeks ago, great gig, still going strong! Fugazi are the shit as are Thee Oh Sees as mentioned above. Really like a lot of post-punk bands too like Joy Division, one of my all time faves, they took punk to a different level. Gang of Four, Television and Talking Heads, the list goes on and on. One thing I really love about punk is how it re-influenced (is that even a word?!) rock music again, a genre that was getting a little tiring was totally reenergised by punk and those influences are still felt today in so many good bands, (far too many to mention) including Pearl Jam.
