    To address the term "hate crimes" - aren't most of them just that, race or religion or fill in the blank aside?

    Why isn't rape called a hate crime?

    All of these atrocities are hateful and offensive.

    you're definitely right ... in that everywhere has race problems ...

    but we're never likely to agree on this ... race doesn't always play a part but often it does ... and people want to believe otherwise ... the people rallying around trayvon martin aren't rallying because of 1 incident ... it's starting to boil over ...

    polaris...I may not always agree with you but typically respect the thoughts you post.

    i'm sorry i don't live up to your expectations ...

    in any case ... if you believe that the cause of rape is simply hate - then sure ... i can understand your belief but my understanding of the causes of rape are that there are a multitude of reasons ... some of which are related to inadequacies felt by the perpetrator as well as the power angle ... neither of these causes would i classify as hate or based on an overriding hatred of women ...

    No need to apologize - and for the record, despite my being surprised at how pissed off I was at the comment, I was trying to be respectful toward you, not condescend...and certainly not full of expectations of you.

    And no, I'm not so naive or blind to believe that THE cause of rape is "hate" - my point was that sometimes it IS a factor, and sometimes not. Just as in crimes against anyone that would be labeled as such or not.

    Let's not be so quick to deem one worthy of hate and not another, simply by virtue of who is attacked.

    i'm just simply responding to you believing all crimes are hate ... i don't see it as such ... hence why they classify certain crimes as hate and some not ...

    I often wonder how much of it is race and how much generational/dress/culture/whatever you want to call it though.

    I mean, does someone look and see simply black or white? Or do they see a kid in jeans and a polo differently than a kid in torn up jeans, tattoos, piercings, drugs, etc regardless of race?

    It is certainly stereotyping/profiling, etc regardless, but it would be interesting to know the truth.

    Not talking specifically about Trayvon here, just in general.

    In my opinion, rape would be a "power" crime or "hate of thyself" crime - one who truly is not at peace with themselves turn to crime. And crime usually involves some type of hate.

    That was pretty much my point as relates to crimes themselves.

    Using, say, a gun on someone for the purpose of taking what they have (or taking their body) IS about power and, I'd imagine, not thinking too highly of themselves.

    It's all hateful.

    The reason Trayvon was so popular was because of the circumstances and who was involved. Many of the Chicago deaths are normal, sadly, and nothing "new." Most of it is gang on gang. I am not disagreeing with you, it is a shame that one case is spotlighted and not others, but it is no surprise why it was spotlighted.
