    Me neither, on both points.

But, it seems like it's looming...been looming.

Nice to read today that - assuming it's accurate - he opened his eyes and smiled.

Must've been sweet for him and his loved ones.

Looks like it was a false report, the website deleted the story.

I was actually hoping it was true. The man is suffering, and I hope he is out of his misery soon instead of it drawing out longer. :( He, of all people, deserves a dignified death.

At almost midnight on the east coast in the US, I am about to go to sleep knowing full well that I will wake up to Nelson Mandela being dead. I truly hope the world understands what this man meant to our planet and he gets the respect he deserves. In my 30 years, I can think of no one else who deserves the respect he does.

Thank you, for standing up to what's right. Thank you for showing courage in the face of a massive majority and thank you for showing this cold world what dignity and respect means.

This is literally the first person aside from my old man that I will shed a tear for. Thank you. America can certainly take a lesson from your courage.

Those are heavy thoughts, well worth reflecting on and well said, Cliffy. Very moving. Thank you.

    Thank you Cliffy...

A truly great man. He changed the world. I can't really think of anyone who had such an impact.

May he slip away peacefully and with dignity.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
    hear my name
    take a good look
    this could be the day
    hold my hand
    lie beside me
    i just need to say
  • I saw a headline saying he has improved a bit. He is in critical, but stable condition.

    Bittersweet:

Meanwhile, Mandela's eldest daughter said he appeared to be able to hear family members.

Speaking to SABC radio, Makaziwe Mandela said: "I won't lie, it doesn't look good. But as I say, if we speak to him, he responds and tries to open his eyes. He's still there. He might be waning off, but he's still there."

By the way, that was a really nice post up there, Cliffy.

Lots of rumors going around but it appears he is still on life support. The rumors are disheartening- next thing you know the cheesy tabloids on the super market check out isles will have head lines like "Mandela Abducted by Aliens- Family Feuding Over Who Gets to Keep his Sox". :?

A more likely-too-be-truthful report is this:

I don't really profess to know the history of him but when he was arrested wasn't he stockpiling over 200,000 grenades and land mines?

I have been told he was asked to renounce violence but refused to do so.

Well it's in the Rivonia trial transcripts...

    Also

"The extent to which the National High Command plotted their policy of sabotage...can be gauged from their ‘production requirements’— a program which they planned to complete in six months. These requirements, as the documents prove, included 144 tons of ammonium nitrate, 21.6 tons of aluminium powder, and 15 tons of black powder. Without taking into account the explosives and detonators which the members of the sabotage squads throughout the country were enjoined by their leaders to steal from explosives magazines and various mines, the experts will say that the aforementioned ‘production requirements’ constituted sufficient to blow up a town as extensive as Johannesburg...."

Mandela states, " I do not, however, deny that I planned sabotage. I did not plan it in a spirit of recklessness, nor because I have any love of violence. I planned it as a result of a calm and sober assessment of the political situation that had arisen after many years of tyranny, exploitation, and oppression of my people by the Whites."

So sad. One of the truly great human beings. I'm sad he suffered for so long, so in a way am happy for him that he is no longer suffering, but damn, sad day. Lost one of the most positively influential people of our time today. :(

  • Rest in peace Nelson Mandela. Sad to hear this. I knew he was in poor health for months, so it doesn't surprise me that much, but still, big loss.

95 years is a damn good run. Granted some of those were in the clinker, but still it is as much time as any of us should hope for.

    I'm with you.

This should be more of a celebration of his life and what he gave the world.

    Special man.
  • I've spent just under 2 months in RSA in the past couple years. Thoughts are with my new friends there. My wife and I made the trip to Robben Island last September. Remembering his cell it's hard to imagine anyone spending 17 years in it and even coming out human, compared to the guiding light that cam out that was Madiba! RIP
