First and foremost, I want to express my deepest thanks to Pearl Jam for coming to our little corner of the world. It was a dream come true for many Newfoundlanders to have an incredible band of this status join us on the rock. There was a very unique buzz in the city this weekend and it was all because of you. I don't know if you guys ever read any of these messages but, I truly hope you know how much we in Newfoundland appreciate you coming. It was by far the highlight of many peoples lives... including mine.

I also hope that the time you all (members of Pearl Jam and their crew) spent here was enjoyable and pleasent. We take pride in our community and our kindness and I hope that shone through to all of you.

Lastly, I really hope you come back. I know that this is more than likely a once and a lifetime kinda thing but, if at all possible please join us here again... but this time, do an outdoor show. That's the way to go in Newfoundland and there is no doubt in my mind that it woudl be the biggest show ever in our Provinces history. 30-50 thousand people easy would join you in any field on the rock... to rock. Not only Newf's either; as witnessed during this visit, many from all over the world would join you here as many are dying to visit this place for the first time or find some excuse to come back.

Please Pearl Jam, come back to us sometime. Play a show outdoors. Rock this Rock again.

(Sign or Bump please. Make this a petition for them to return)

I want to visit NF next time Pearl Jam plays there, so I'll bump this.

PS. Does the guy that was hitchhiking across Canada from Newfoundland frequent the board? I met him in Montreal and Ottawa, and was wondering how he made out.
I'm gone ..Long gone..This time I'm letting go of it all...So long...Cause this time I'm gone
  • I'm pretty sure that he hangs out here somewhere. What his handle is, I don't know.

  • AMEN TO THIS THREAD - talk about making my life - I grew up in a community of 500 (or less) and this has been my favourite band since I was 12 (13 years ago). I turned many friends and family member on to them and the day I heard they were actually coming to Newfoundland I could have died. It took me nearly all summer to believe it and the whole weekend was such a blur and now it's over already but my oh my!!! It was all I could do to not cry through the whole show! THANK-YOU PEARL JAM from the bottom of our hearts!!!

what a horrible experience...i had the most horrible experience in NL...we went on a 2 hour boat trip and puked the whole time...threw up everything i had until there were only blood to throw up...i seriously never felt sicker

besides that St. John's was amazing...it's a beautiful city with great people who are they only to have a good time

from the music, Pearl Jam, the bars, Gorge Street, to the pub crawl, to the hundreds of people we met, and the walk down Signal Hill on Monday was amazing!

I will never forget what an amazing time I had...

it wasnt the booze...ask the others on the boat; i was fine, it wasnt the booze

i dont think the ocean is for me, unless I OD i gravel next time ; )

i had a great time...not sure if id ever head back there soon, cause if i did i dont think i can ever have as good of a time...maybe ill see some of you all at another show...im already talking to people to gather up for a few more shows next year; likely at the end of a leg (cant wait to hear the new album)
  • I know it wasn't the booze. I remember you guy sayin' that the next day. No sea legs for you, that's all.

I'm definatly up for meetin' at a different concert sometime. I can't wait to see another one as my addiction for the band has gotten worse.

    We'll see what happens...

  • allright I found out what Screech was but what the hell does "Kiss the Fish" mean? I think I know but I need confirmation.....
  • It's pretty much exactly what it is. Part of the Screech In involves kissing a dead Cod fish...

Maybe now I'm more confused. Can you describe the ritual? And exactly is Screech. Also I talked to some friends in Canada today and they said the people of New Foundland are known for their generous hospitality. They als osaid it was the most beautiful area of Canada. What they couldn't explain was that goofy 1/2 hour time difference.....anyway back to the Screech...thanks!
  • The ritual is different in a lot of ways depending on who does it. A lot of people make it very theatrical while others will keep to the basics... which at least involves 1 shot of Newfie Screech and a kiss of the cod. There are other things like learnin' Newfoundland lingo and sayin'/Singin' lines of Newfie music but basically it's the shot and the cod that overtakes the ritual.

Here's some info on Screech and Screech In's...

You're friend is right though, we do pride ourselves with being extreamly kind and generous. We love people almost as much as we love our Province, which indeed is quite breathtaking.

As for the 1/2 hour time difference, it's basically because of where we lay on the map. Because we are the eastern most point in North America, we're a little removed from the rest of the continent, enough to have our own time zone. Basically, the sun rises here before anywhere. You'll see what I'm talkin' about if you look at any map of North America.

  • So, anyone else up for an Outdoor Pearl Jam show in Newfoundland?

Also, what's the chances of the 2 St. John's show from this tour being released as an real live bootleg? I mean, it could be a 2 disk set and even include the screech in stuff as I think it was taped.

One thing with the Screech In is that's it's not just a lil thing to do for fun. The persons that take part in the Screech In become honorary Newfoundlanders.
They get a certificate (most of the time) stating that they did the initiation and they can go anywhere in the world and tell whoever they meet that they are from either where they were from (in the case of the band Seattle) or from Newfoundland.

Sooo….by that rational…we can now say that grunge more or lest started in Newfoundland.

    :-D

So lets see…we are now famous for our bad weather, the Newfoundland Dog, the Labrador Retriever and Grunge!

    Haha

And as for the outdoor concert…that would be great…I like the stadium though, as there is a better chance in actually seeing the band.

Hell I don’t care where they play, I’d go see them wherever.

If they were playing on a barge in the St. John’s harbour and I had to float in the shit bubble to see them I’d do it.

  • Figure this is a good time to bump this baby.

I'm dying to see PJ again and I can't afford to see them elsewhere... right now anyway. I know it's pretty much a snowballs chance in hell that they'll come back to the rock but, one gotta hope.

Your probably right about the stadium concert Jamie. The smaller the venue the better really. However, there's something special about 30, 000 people or more gathering together, which is what you could only get outdoors in this province.

i've posted much about halifax, and it was great, and St. John's was also great. from walking up the hill to the battery, to chillin at The Chill.. friendly people everywhere and, of course, the Noise in Mile One.

    Cheers!!
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green
  • I had a great time in St John's. Meeting Mike & Stone were just one of the many highlights of that weekend. :D It is such a great town. Beautiful place with great people. An outdoor show would kick ass for sure, I am not sure if I could make it back for the outdoor show but I would try!!

The walk to Ches' from the Delta almost freakin' killed us ;)

Twice now I have been to Newfoundland and I still haven't been to Gros Morne. I must make it there.

the newfoundland experience was great except for one thing: the complete idiots working at the venue. the lack of concerts held in the area really showed by the employees.

nice place that i would like to go back to..
    I went to the concert
And I fought through the crowd
Guess I got a little too excited
When I thought you were around
  • I'm hoping PJ feel the same way.

You're probably right about the workrs too Sarah. We didn't have a very good experience with them either but... we weren't being the smartest of people either. Smokin' J's inside is a hard thing to get away with....
