David Bowie's cover of Wild is the Wind (Nina Simone) is a blowaway. Absolutely brill.

i really think johnny cash's version of hurt is 1000x better than the original by NIN. the song has new meaning with his interpretation. cash is an old man with a lot of demons and personal troubles. you can tell that he wishes he could start again, a million miles away.
    powerful.

The NIN version is by far the best. By far.

    Agreed

Elton John's Pinball Wizard over The Who's. Sorry if I offended anyone but I honestly like it better.

Cake's cover of I will survive is pretty hilarious.

Djali Zwan - Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden)

Camper Van Beethoven - Pictures of Matchstick Men (Status Quo)
Johnny Cash - Rusty Cage (Soundgarden)

I prefer all PJ versions of the The Who songs over the originals. Might have to do with the fact that I heard the covers first mainly, but so it is :)

Big Who fan, and I prefer PJ versions over the originals
    Blasphemy! I say blasphemy!

Nah, if it's the version you heard first you're almost always going to like it better. I like PJ's Who covers a lot but the Who songs were in my DNA before PJ even existed. Read: I'm old!

Besides, I like The Who's version of Summertime Blues better than Eddie Cochran's. Don't even talk about Blue Cheer.

Wow!! How old (young) are you?

I wore out all of the Who versions before Pearl Jam even existed...

First, I love the PJ versions, but they are not better than The Who versions.

Pete > Mike and Stone put together
    Roger > Ed
    The Ox > Everyone
Drums we will call a toss up. Moon isn't everyone's cup of tea and we won't even talk about Kenny or Zac or whoever.

But, my answer to the OP is anything and everything written by Bob Dylan by pretty much anyone.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

Zeppelin is one of the all-time greats. We can give Zeppelin the edge for writing the song, but Tool remastered it to sound better in my opinion. I'll side with the op for this one.
