sorry if this has been discussed:

i really think johnny cash's version of hurt is 1000x better than the original by NIN. the song has new meaning with his interpretation. cash is an old man with a lot of demons and personal troubles. you can tell that he wishes he could start again, a million miles away.
powerful.

I prefer all PJ versions of the The Who songs over the originals. Might have to do with the fact that I heard the covers first mainly, but so it is :)

Agree. I still curse my decision NOT to buy Santa Barbara tickets for the Ed Uke tour and just see Long Beach. Long Beach was great but I missed on hearing Ed's take on Cash's take on the NIN tune.

To this point if you revisit some of the songs that Trent Reznor has written you could see the huge potential for many different artists to interpret his stuff. Reznor is a tortured genius of a soul imo. His lyrics can be read aloud from many songs and be very poignant.

Jimi Hendrix's Cover of All along the Watchtower.

I am a big Bob Dylan fan, love his version too, but Jimi took it to a new level.

I choose the PJ covers now, but The Who's when they were in their heyday

Elton John's Pinball Wizard over The Who's. Sorry if I offended anyone but I honestly like it better.

Cake's cover of I will survive is pretty hilarious.

    Blasphemy! I say blasphemy!

Nah, if it's the version you heard first you're almost always going to like it better. I like PJ's Who covers a lot but the Who songs were in my DNA before PJ even existed. Read: I'm old!

Besides, I like The Who's version of Summertime Blues better than Eddie Cochran's. Don't even talk about Blue Cheer.

Wow!! How old (young) are you?

I wore out all of the Who versions before Pearl Jam even existed...
