can we discuss this? warning. these videos are not mild. WWII Japanese air force, ("gods" as they are called) the kamikazes. i respect these pilots. how is it any different than today's suicide bombers that i do not respect? maybe it is because grandpa was over there fighting too? i wish i understood

    war is so fucking ridiculous

So what would you or anybody else do if your country was militarily attacked and you were in their position? Just crash into the sea?
acquire a weapon & protect myself & my loved ones

i said i respect the kamikaze pilots

Insane question to ponder, but I'm thinking you are not the only one like this. Was it because it was during an 'obvious' war? Maybe because we perceive these suicide bombers doing this for 'honour and country' and not religion as most middle eastern suicide bombers are perceived to be doing this.....

    Food for thought...
thank you for helping me understand this. i believe you are on to something. thank you

Kamikazes did it in the name of war, against "enemy" troops who were there to inflict harm on them if given the chance. Suicide bombers aim to terrorize and kill civilians in the name of a cause.

I have more respect for a kamikaze pilot than I do for the pilot of an unmanned drone considering that a kamikaze pilot had to forfeit their life to complete their mission. Honestly, what risk does the pilot of a drone assume? In many ways, the kamikaze pilot was an early precursor to guided ballistic weaponry. We now have technology that achieves the same results. How is the use of guided missiles or drones any less cowardly than what the Japanese were doing during WWII?

I'm also not sure I would compare a suicide bomber to a kamikaze pilot. Most suicide bombers seem to focus on inflicting collateral damage against unarmed civilians whereas kamikaze attacks seem to have been directed primarily at military targets.
    ...
The dawning of drone warfare is upon us.
The U.S. tested out carrier based launching of a drone aircraft. U.S. drones are capable of running autonomous missions and make threat assesment decisions during the course of their mission.
China in behind in the technology... but, they have a low-tech response. They have thousands of simple drones that will be able to 'swarm' carrier operations by the U.S. The idea being, you cannot launch your war planes if there are thousands of small drones infesting your launch path. These small drone can also be armed and 'kamikazee' onto the deck of a carrier, disrupting launch operations. Too many to hit with close in defense systems.
We opened the drone box. Maybe, we should have been more careful.

That being said, I have no respect for suicide bombers. I don't care what war it was or what year it was. It was a chicken shit way to fight a war then as it is now.
    ...
I sort of get the sentiment... but, what about our use of drones? Is that chicken-shit?
Is the only reason why a Kamikazee pilot in a Mitsubishi Zero is chicken-shit because the plane was not originally intended for that use? I mean, they WERE soldiers flying those things. We call dying in war 'The Ultimate Sacrifice for our nation'... don't we? Don't they?
    ...
Anyway, not arguing, just trying to add some perspective.
Snipers were considered chickenshit when the Germans deployed them in WWI. You were supposed to form battle lines and fire upon enemy ranks from those lines.
Early colonists used terrorist tactics by adopting methods used by Native Ameicans to hit British troops outside the normal tactics of warfare in 1772.

Fair point. I really don't have a good response for that other than I'd rather see a drone bomb an enemy rather than risking an American pilots life.

For whatever reason, I've thought about your post all day. I can see where it would sound hypocritical to have no respect for kamikaze pilots and suicide bombers and be for the use of drones. But, when you compare the two, they are different. Kamikaze pilot volunteered to give their life for their country and the country volunteered to destroy a perfectly good fighter plane. To me, that isn't a cost effective way to fight a war. You lose a trained pilot and a plane.
Drones, on the other hand, are remote controlled airplanes. They are not willingly going to be destroyed by being flown into an enemy position. Yes, they can be shot down. But, theres no loss human life. Seems to be a more cost efficient way to fight in a war.

I know I'm not explaining myself the way I'm thinking it. And maybe I'm just rationalizing the hypocrisy.

This begs the follow up question, will we, or our future generations look back through time upon the 9/11 attackers et all with respect...

    NOT A FUCKING CHANCE :fp:

This was phrased as a question not a statement; I do not believe that one day they will be elevated to the ethereal heights of the sons of the divine wind...as you will soon be made aware we in the UK, more specifically London, have just suffered a small scale, but none the less horiffic attack wherein a young soldier has been hacked to death by two machete wielding attackers. Details are confused and slow in forthcoming at this time, but the belief is it is a terrorist led incident, with muslim political undertones.
So just to reiterate, what I said on my original post was a question that was posed to invite comment from this always incisive forum, not to act as an agent prvocateur and ridicule any attacks on any of our countries which are many and varied.

NOT A FUCKING CHANCE...suits me fine...dirty fuckin lowlife cowardly bastards who will never step foot on a battlefield...another reason why I abhor all forms of organised religion.
