The last songs sounds like a Bruce Springsteen song, no?

I think all the new songs sound like The National songs.... that I have heard already.

I'll admit that I don't know much of their catalog. High Violet is the only record I have---I heard so much hype about it so I figured I'd check it out. I get that this band has an appeal that speaks to many people and they seem like genuinely nice guys based on a couple interviews I've seen. My problem with their music from what I've heard is all the damn doom and gloom lyrics and textures. I get it---we all experience pain, sorrow, strife, etc...but it gets old after a while when it's song after song of this stuff. The earnestness could take a back seat once in a while. Just write an uptempo, kick-ass, rock n' roll song with breezy, upbeat lyrics for a change. Does anyone relate to what I'm getting at here? Is my perception off-base having heard only one record?

You nailed it. They are a one trick pony. Band Of Horses ring a bell.

I think alligator, boxer, high violet were all great.
First listen they all had songs i attached to quickly.

this one i'm not attaching to anything. The lyrics are not grabbing me like they have and the music is were i'm really let down. it does not seem as interesting.

That said national albums always get better with every listen for me so i'm holding out hope.

I disagree in that the gloominess is what gives them character and separates them from the rest. They have a couple of high energy songs, and they are primarily used to close shows or sets. As someone who has been a huge fan for years, I think that the real issue is that they have become formulaic, predictable, and unwilling to take risks. At this point into their career fans should be able to hear a new record and think "I know this is The National, but they have evolved since their last album". I think they failed miserably in doing that this time around. I don't want to wait three years to hear the same thing I already heard.

Every time I listen to this album, I like it more. My fav album of 2013 thus far. Graceless is my favorite song in the past few years. My two cents.

I think Alligator and Boxer are two of the best albums in recent memory. High violet is great also, but a step behind the two aforementioned albums and trouble will find me.

This album grows every listen and Fireproof and I Need My Girl are amazing.

All of their albums have been "growers" for me.
So even though, I wasn't thrilled with my first listen, it was good enough to give it a few more listens.

Scored the poster of the album from my friendly local record store guy last week. Sweet!

Can anybody who's been to a show this tour so far describe the merch situation? Specifically, have there been any gigposters so far, or is it just standard fare like shirts, cds and such?

    No. It's an original.

Similar in structure to Cardinal Song.

This is a great album. The first one I have listened to by The National. I will have to listen to some more.

You should check out their 3 preceding albums as well. Alligator and Boxer are brilliant. High violet is really good too

The band's website indicated the code was Trouble. I'll be hoping for better seats for Chicago in the public sale tomorrow.

And as for the "one trick pony" comments, I think you have to agree with them. Luckily for a lot of us we still enjoy every album regardless.
  • Their last 3 records really have stuck with me, obviously "trouble will find me" is still in heavy rotation as it is pretty new-ish. IThe I went crazy for HIGH VIOLET and BOXER. First time I heard the band was about 5 years ago...after hearing the drumming on "mistaken for strangers" I was HOOKED on this band for life.
