As of tonight, I think this one deserves its own thread

Most of their music is dark though. And I think the rip isn't that great thats why it doesn't sound super great.
It will be my third time seeing them but first time with them as the headliner

There is some Guided by Voices in there. Some Smiths. Definetly Pavement in the lyrics. I have so say what they do sounds pretty unique to me.
It's melancholy indie chamber rock. Great lyrics that reflect male insecurities and shortcomings. Nothing groundbreaking but done really, really fucking well.

I think The Boxer is a little more accessible than Alligator. But Alligator was their first great album in my opinion so thats a good place to start. I didn't love it at first but was patient with it. Enjoy!

As for 'TWFM'...I'd put it right behind Alligator and Boxer, ahead of Sad Songs and High Violet. Try to think of a band who has put out 5 albums in a row (recent memory) as good as Sad Songs, Alligator, Boxer, High Violet, and now TWFM....I can't do it. Graceless is an instant classic...one of the best they will ever make...Slipped is the best ballad since Geese/City MIddle...I Should Live in Salt, Humiliation, and Sea of Love are all not far behind.
Personally, start with Alligator, then go to Cherry Tree EP. then Boxer, then High Violet.
If you really want to be ballsy, you can start with Sad Songs for Dirty lovers, their second album. Skip their first, even they say don't bother.
This new one is great starter too.
P. much.
Certainly no band in the past 10-15 years. Certainly people here will argue for Pearl Jam. Really through I'd say the Smiths or REM were the last band to put out albums this good and this critically acclaimed.
I am utterly blown away by this album. Pure brilliance.
Tim, did you get a chance to catch Mistaken for Strangers (Tom's documentary)?

Saw it at Tribeca...it's brilliant.
You need Alligator now.
i guess it's really a matter of opinion...but...
wilco -
being there
summerteeth
yankee hotel foxtrot
a ghost is born
sky blue sky
i'd even throw am in there on the top to make it six, although that one isn't quite as epic as the other ones.
mmj almost did five classics in a row but put out evil urges after 4 masterpieces
there's been some other great runs as well. wilco came to mind first. i guess if you love the national, it's easy to make a statement like that. either way, i will agree that their albums have been pretty consistent. i think sad songs seems to be their most underrated album, in this thread particularly. at times it's my favorite. 'cardinal song' and 'available' might be my two favorite songs by the band.
as for this new one. i've listened to it a few times now. it's got a nice sound, and it certainly sounds like the national, but no songs have come out and grabbed me yet. maybe they will over time. i'm gonna keep spinning it for a while, because i don't strongly dislike it, but unfortunately, my initial reaction would be to say that it sounds like the national doing a great job at being the national, without doing anything particularly interesting or different. it's borderline uninspired. i don't know if this will make sense to anyone that's heard it, but is just seems a little phoned in and safe to me. i will say though that matt's vocals sound as good as ever. i do miss the scream from the earlier stuff though.
I disagree. High Violet was that album. The National is pretty damn big. They are probably one of the biggest indie bands in the world. What other bands are bigger in the indie scene than Arcade Fire, The national, Bon Iver? They are big tent indie.
I dont think they will get any bigger. Trouble Will Find Me isnt a crossover/mainstream potential album. Its dark. and inaccessible.
I think they are like Pearl Jam or Wilco or bands like that. bands that are damn big and commercially and critically revered, but who arent playing in front of 60,000. Well I guess PJ does that. But still... the main point is I dont think Wilco or PJ will get any bigger. Same with The National
