Can't wait! I really enjoyed their first record and thought they were great live. No news on whether they are actually back together though.

I'm surprised to see this as they split up. Have they gotten back together or is it just one of them carrying on the name?

It's possible a lot of it was written/recorded before they split up or they just worked on things separately. We just don't know. When they announced their problems they did say they hoped to release new music in 2013.

They both commented about the album on their website so it is both of them. Just recently, at the 2013 grammys they didn't even look at or thank each other during their acceptance speech so I fear this may be the last we hear of them. I hope not!

I think they're very good but it depends what you like. They're a folk duo.

glad to hear this but i feel like im on another planet or something. Theres never been any suggestion from Joy or John Paul that they personally disagreed or were fighting. In fact, as Ive pointed out in previous threads, both said in multiple interviews after Barton Hollow came out that they were happy doing it the independant way, both had success in the mainstream world prior to The Civil Wars forming, and both said they "already had their tantrums of stardom back then and were happy to just stay indie".

The Civil Wars announce new album, possibly still aren't getting along

    by Grady Smith
One year ago, folk duo the Civil Wars (a.k.a. John Paul White and Joy Williams) seemed like they had everything going for them.
Their debut album, Barton Hollow, had earned Gold certification and won a pair of Grammys; their collaboration with Taylor Swift, “Safe and Sound,” became the breakout track of The Hunger Games; their music was regularly getting played on ABC’s Nashville; and they were performing to sold-out crowds across the country.
But all their momentum came to a screeching halt last November, when they canceled upcoming tour dates due to “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.” (Despite the divorce language used in the statement, Williams and White are both married to other people.) The singers didn’t explain their hiatus any further, though they did end their sad statement on an encouraging note: “Our sincere hope is to have new music for you in 2013.”
Well, that hope will become a reality this summer. The Civil Wars announced today that they will release a self-titled sophomore album in late summer 2013, but they didn’t dispel any of the chatter about the turmoil within the group. Each member posted vague personal statements on their official site this afternoon:

    John Paul White:
“Patience is a virtue. Yours has been appreciated. Here’s to the hope you consider it rewarded.”
    Joy Williams:
“If you are reading this, I want to thank you for taking the time. I’m grateful for your patient support. I am very glad to say that new music is coming and I am fiercely proud of this album. A lot of soul, sweat and tears went into its creation. I hope you feel the heart in each song, that it might connect with yours. We are, each one of us, all journeying, learning and growing along this ever-evolving path. Hope this note finds you all well, wherever you are…”
The album cover, a pillar of billowing black smoke, further suggests that The Civil Wars’…er, civil war isn’t completely behind them, but it’s a pretty image in line with the black-and-white imagery of their first album.

So, there you go — a bittersweet announcement from a much-beloved band. One thing’s for sure: it should make for some compelling listening. Are you excited for the new music?

    \

Their tweets sound pretty straight forward to me. Nothing vague about them. And I find it hard to believe they hate each other if: they recorded and wrote an entire new album together, and are going back out on tour together.

Bizaare response to this. I dont get it.

I dont think they split up. They wouldnt be releasing an album if they were split up.

My personal feeling is its label and guys in suits that are causing the discord and its not Joy and John paul that have a problem with each other.

They canceled their tour last fall due to disagreements (internal discord and difference in motivation or something like that according to their message) and basically said they couldn't continue as a touring act anymore. There has never been an explanation or clarification as to what that means or if they are officially "broken up" but it doesn't sound good and it didn't look good at the grammys. Where did you read they were going back on tour?

I thought their record label (sensibility) was owned by Joy and her husband?

FYI I've read some of the comments on their facebook over the months and people who had booked non refundable bus/trains/flights and hotels for their shows that were subsequently canceled were compensated by the band for their expenses. I think that says a lot about them as people.

the internal discord could be anything. Doesnt necessarily mean it was between Joy and John paul. As far as things looking not good, they wouldnt have released another album had things been really bad. This isnt really the type of music you could pull a Postal Service, and e-mail each other parts of the song, Joy e-mail her part for example.

Just from my own observations of the interviews I dont really believe its infighting between Joy and John Paul. I think they are under pressure from outside sources. As I said, during the press junket for Barton Hollow, this was months after they had blown up, both said they were happy being independent, both were happy the way the music was going, and both said they were grown ups about all this.

Something happened between that interview and the cancelling of the tour.

I think outside sources are trying to force them to be more commercial and they arent into it. Or the labels trying to take their money.

its also possible I guess that they disagree and dislike each other but somehow made it work so they can release music and somehow maintain civility. The Swell Season and Mar and Glen's breakup and their growing apart, and then releasing their 2nd album comes to mind.

Yeah I remember hearing about that. That's a really good move if you're cancelling dates.

This is great news!!! Wasn't sure if they would 'split up' for good and Joy & John Paul's body language at the Grammy's didn't make things look any more promising. Hope they stick around, the are an insanely talented duo.

so i just watched them accepting the grammy. Hadnt seen it before. And you are right, their body language does seem to suggest some sort of distance and rift between them, That said, once John Paul moved away from the mic and Joy started talking they did move closer to one another.

I think several things could have been going on: 1. I think Joy and John Paul really are just humble, down to earth people, and them winning a grammy is as bizaare to them as it is to mainstream america. I dont get the sense they are obsessed with fame and money, after all they both walked away from successful mainstream careers to start this unknown band that took off out of nowhere.

and two: John Paul seems to have just a really dry sense of humor. A deadpan type style. So him sort of with furrowed brow as Joy was talking seems to me to fit with who he has been as far as the public has been aware of him. He seems incredibly shy, and alot of times Joy does the talking during press. He seems much more into being quiet and is shy.

I just find it so odd they could be so in sync and so "of one mind" in terms of creative vision, and then out of nowhere one of them changes their mind and differs. As I said, they couldnt have been more in agreeance of what the plan was post Barton Hollow taking off. Both agreed they'd stick to their guns, neither wanted to write a mainstream pop album, they just wanted to continue on doing what they were doing.

I agree with musicismylife78. It seemed like they were so in sync with where they wanted to go. Both in interviews and on the stage..they looked so happy, it's hard to imagine what could have happened so suddently that changed everything. I was just reading a few of the comments on their most recent facebook posting from this morning and saw someone link to this billboard article

    http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/ ... -in-summer

I kind've wish I hadn't read it because I was starting to think musicismylife was right. Not that they still can't work things out though..I hope they can. And the article may not be 100 percent accurate.

It basically says the album was finished before "splitting up" in November. The article also cites industry sources as saying the duo would not reunite except for a few high profile appearances.:cry::cry:

I have no idea what happened, but I really hope they can still work it out. At first I was thinking maybe Joy just wanted to take a break from touring due to her new baby but you would think they would come out and say that, right?

Thats sad to hear. But as I said, from a performing and recording standpoint makes sense if they have some sort of disagreement between them that they'd be unable to continue. Their songs require Joy and John Paul to be singing inches from each other. And to a certain extent it would be hard to resolve any sort of conflict considering how familial their organization and buisness has been. During the Grammy speech Joy mentioned a guy who had the same last name as her husband, and that he was running their record label. So not only does her husband manage the band, but I guess a relative of her husband runs the record label. Seems to me if some sort of disagreement occurred, it would be hard to resolve conflict in that atmosphere.
