Playing songs too fast
Why does the band play some songs so much faster than they used to?

the tempo changes all the time. whether it's the mood, the vibe, the flow....whatever...
when you play live, things tend to speed up. sometimes (very rarely), they slow down.
it's all about energy....and it just happens.

I agree. I don't think it's conscious. I do think it sometimes hurts the performance. Sometimes when you've mastered something TOO well, you just start getting off on the tightness of it, rather than really feeling your way through it. (whoa, that sounds dirty). I don't think it's all Matt. Lots of times the other guys start the songs way fast. Either way, they're not interested in playing it as it was on the records.
You didn't happen to call into AET when Matt was on, did you?

BUT, I agree that Given To Fly is much faster than ever which takes its toll on Eddie's voice, breathing and control.
Other songs played way too fast, which loses the overall vibe and groove of the song are State of Love and Trust, RVM, Unthought Known and Even Flow. When you are at the shows, you don't notice as much, but as we're so spoilt with so many bootlegs, we can hear just how fast, rushed and strained these songs have become.
exactly.

But, that's just me. Other people may like it.

about the matt cameron comment, i agree in some extent, but Given to fly starts of with Mike, so if he starts too fast, it ain't the drummers fault

It's just gotten faster & faster over the years . . not that I mind, but some songs do need to slow down a bit IMO. Some, like above, may work better with the tempo increased a bit...

And I like faster!
It's not about kissing their ass on both cheeks, I just find the entire argument stupid. They play how they play. If they wanna slow something down like they did Jeremy in '95, they will.
Completely agree with this. It just happens when you play live. You have nerves, adrenaline you feed off each other. It doesn't necessarily fall on the drummer. It is basically up to whoever starts the song to set the temp. I like the tempo up for live shows. It gives the songs more energy. The only real downside is it makes it a lot more difficult for the singer to breathe. So it can hurt the vocals sometimes.
