what's funny is that republicans used to be the good guys
lincoln was a republican and the democrats did not want to abolish slavery

    i'm slightly left of center
i used to be a republican right up 'til the first read my lips while i lie to your face bush
now i'm a democrat and not thrilled with them right now either

    are you a democrat because:

    1. it's the other party that isn't republican?
    2. the lesser of two evils?
    3. because you like what they stand for (pretty sure you eliminated this one)

i ask because - it boggles my mind that one would choose either of these parties to represent them

    yes, yes
and between the two, i prefer what they stand for over republicans
we learned in 2000 that voting outside the party will only give you another bush
fuck 'em if they can't take a joke

this is where everyone is wrong. the democratic party is pretty much the same as the centrist parties in other countries. the republicans are to the right of most right wing parties in other countries.

this country is progressing. social security, medicare, the new deal, etc were all ideas from the left. the right wants to significantly cut or do away with these programs that people depend on.

anybody equating obamacare to socialism or stating that the us is headed for communism and fascism has no idea what the definitions of these terms are. and that is the embarrassing part. that so many people in this country would not know socialism, fascism, or communism if it bit them in the ass.
this is very intresting post and i have this in mind when i start the thread..
my family support the central right party here, but,is kinda like the democratic party at us

The Democratic Party has a huge socialist agenda... and it's getting ugly. That is not what the country's founders intended, it's why they left their original countries.

The truth is no one really cares any more. I see anarchy in a few years.

A huge socialist agenda is a little bit of an exaggeration. Sorry... regardless of the cases of abuse that are going to occur... taking care of people when they are hurt, educating the youth, and providing assistance when hard times hit cannot be viewed as a bad thing.

Are you totally sure the country's founders didn't have this in mind?

I look at the big, huge chunk of tax taken off my cheque every two weeks and think to myself. "Boy. I'd sure to like to have that money too!" But, then I think to myself, "I've got it pretty good. I live in a great country. I don't want to see any of the services we provide people change in any way. If a portion of my money goes towards helping someone that needs help then great!"

A little while back in the winter... it was really cold. I'll make a long story short: my son and I were out and I pulled over my vehicle and gave this 22-23 year old homeless guy walking the sidewalk with a big blanket some cash. My son asked me why I did this to which I replied, "That guy was a little guy once too. He's got a mom and dad that likely love him. He's made some poor choices, but that's irrelevant right now. I can only hope that if you were ever in such a spot... someone would look to reach out to you and provide a little compassion and help instead of sneering at you."

I haven't missed that $10 just like I don't miss the portion of my salary that the government takes. I know there are cases of abuse, but I don't think about those near the amount I think of the good that is occurring.

I dare you to take away all those social programs you bemoan. You think you got problems now?

Why do people always seem to confuse social with socialist? I grew up in GDR, that was a socialist dictatorship.

    So true.

There's a simple answer to the original question. Left = liberal, right = conservative. That said, the Left and the Right 2-party system is destroying this country.

The word socialism is a word used by the right in order to create fear among their followers.
Other words used by the right to engender fear...Fascism, Communism, gay marriage, and legalization of marijuana

These are buzz words that entities like Foxnews and people like Alex Jones, Breitbart, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and others use to scare their believers

My sense of humor tilts, conservatively, to the left. Exactly what this lifelong independent would have expected.
