So, the 4 year old goes inside to get a rifle, comes outside and shoots his friend with it. So, was it intentional? It sounds it, doesn't it? Which is far more disturbing than an accidental shooting from merely playing with guns...

Regardless, I am sick of hearing about these tragedies. What's the solution? Prosecuting parents? The parents were right there in the side yard! They're not going to ban guns... But there's got to be some solution here. Mandatory lock up of personal items and keeping them unloaded?

i am the firm belief that if your gun was used in a crime than you should be arrested. I would make the parents responsible for this crime. hell, i would make it a crime if your gun was stolen cause you were not being a responsible gun owner.

secondly, is anyone else kind of scared that a 4 year old can hold a rifle and shot a kid in the head. I have never held a gun before but aren't rifles supposed to be heavy? I also wonder if the parent even showed the kid how to shoot cause i expect a shot to the head would be hard for someone 4 year old.

if negligence is proven, yes. but if it's locked up safely away from toddlers, then the obvious answer would be no. if it's just sitting there next to your tv dinner on the couch, then yes, you should be held liable for that.

how about for a 4 year old kid?

ok i went to far there in calling some a criminal but I think if you don't lock up your guns so that they are not easily stolen than you should face a fine for not being a responsible gun owner.

from what i hear from responsible gun owners, you should have your gun in a safe. rights equal responsibility and your inability to keep your weapon safe has lead to a person being killed.

    That's funny.

    *Bad guy breaks into house*

Stop mr bad guy I have to go open my safe so I can defend myself.

The level of stupid on this forum has reached an all-time high. I think I'll take a break. After the gun grabbers don't get their way, because nothing will pass the House, maybe people will return to normal.

soo ... leave a gun loaded without the safety on lying around ... gun gets used to kill someone ... oh well??

this gun debate has gone a bit absurd ... from both sides ...

in any case - gun related deaths like this will only continue to rise cuz at the end of the day, the one thing that is indeed happening is that people are getting stupider and stupider ...

that's the whole hypocrisy of it all. people keep touting themselves as responsible gun owners; "don't punish the law abiding and responsible". Well, if you have your gun sitting by your night stand, and you have kids, or even anyone else in the house, or even a fucking dog (don't laugh, try google), you aren't being very responsible, are you?

if you live alone, then I have no issue with you leaving your gun lying around so you can accidentally shoot yourself at your leisure.

I have much experience with guns. I don't own them anymore: I don't kill things for food anymore and I'm not scared of my neighbours and my government. I make no judgements on hunters and support their right to own a hunting rifle or a shotgun (in some cases a sidearm as well). I have a problem with kooks thinking they need military grade weapons to ward of the imminent threat of the government seeking tyrannical power.

The commonly accepted practice of storing firearms is the gun is locked up and so is the ammunition- in two different locations. The reason for the accidents we hear is that the responsible gun owners have shrugged their responsibilities and like this scenario... little kids get ahold of loaded weapons lying around and kill each other with them.

Unsung... it sounds as if you think your country is at war and that you need guns loaded, on your hip, and mounted facing the front door. And you talk about people being stupid? Come home from the fair. Your nonsense has gone too far. Do everyone a favour and take that break you speak of.

Kinda like comparing deaths via guns to deaths via falling down a garbage chute.

No one is saying take all guns away, and I agree with you that the parents were extremely negligent in this case and many others. But part of the reason they are so complacent about guns is this countries crazy attitude about them and the fact that we think we need them to protect ourselves. It's crazy.

That's ok, I have thick skin, just not a lot of patience on some things. Things like people deciding for me what's best for me. There's too much of that here.

No offense man, but I dont think people are trying to decide what's best for you. Maybe you're taking it too personally... I think people (most) who are anti-gun on here are trying to do what's best for a collective. And they have safety and good intentions (usually) on their minds. It's not an oppression thing.

I do take my RIGHTS very personal. Tell me how many more laws would be needed to stop the Conn. shooting? He broke about ten before ever taking that first shot in that school.

More laws are not the answer.

Some of you have no clue what you re talking about. This happened in New Jersey which happens to have some of the toughest gun laws in the United States. You need to get fingerprinted and get a background check in order to buy a BB gun. This accident happened because of dumb ass parents. I have four kids and each one of my guns is locked up. One person has the key, me.
It s up to people to be responsible and make wise decisions. Unfortunately we have a very small minority that ruins it for the rest of us. But please don't make the arguement that so called assault weapons have to be banned because one kid accidentally shot another kid with a .22.

I can appreciate everything you say, except this. If you dont agree with something like the NRA and their practices, you should voice your opinion. And sorry, the NRA deserves a lot of their subsequent criticism.
