I would rather see Pearl Jam ONCE than 100 Ed Solo Shows

Anyone else agree? The energy put out at a Pearl Jam show is AMAZING! I think I rarely watch Ed during the shows, my eyes are usually fixed on that crazy bastid Mike!
I love how Pearl Jam always keeps us guessing with what they will play next, I just can't wait to see them again!

    I agree 100%.

  • Same here. Ed's an incredible front man, but it's really about Pearl Jam as a band for me. Now a Stone Gossard solo show.....I'M THERE!

hi pjtaper! great meeting ya in la1! :) ever up for a cd/dvd trade, let me know man.

the intimate atmosphere with ed was great. it's was the first time, well for me, that i have ever experienced something like this before.

pearl jam on stage is a different story. we all got pj blood flowing through our veins. we all want to see all the members on stage jam out.

    i can't wait now for june! :)

I agree somewhat. I think I'd rather see PJ once than Ed 10 times. The Ed show I saw was good, but as I've said in other threads, it was a 7 out of 10, whereas all PJ shows I've see were at least a 9.

But, I do find it funny that you still have your ticket needs for LA2 in your signature when you're posting about this. ;)

And Jack Johnson?! I'd rather see PJ once than Jack Johnson 4.2 billion times. I saw him once and that is 2 hours and $35 I'll never have back again. What a waste of time and money. That guy blows live.

If I had to choose because there was only going to be ONE concert ever between PJ and ED, of course I would choose PJ.. this way I get them all and I rock out.. but seeing as I have been to many PJ shows and look forward to many more, plus the fact that there was no date conflict between Ed and PJ (that would be weird, huh?), I certainly would not miss an Ed show, or even 100 of them! =) I don't see a reason to compare artists, not just PJ/Ed, but artists in general. The love of music leads me in many diverse directions and I enjoy it all.

    Peace and Love.

I think if you went into the ED solo show expecting to see 20 PJ songs, you would be dissapointed.

I was expecting a few PJ songs, like 5 a night, but I was hoping they would be 5 different pJ songs per night!

I would definitely chose one Pearl Jam show over multiple Solo performances by Vedder - even though i love the dude to death.................... but Pearl Jam are in a world of their own when it comes to live performances.

I agree with for the most part, but not to the extent you've taken it.

I'd rather see the full band than just Ed solo too. But the Ed solo shows have been better than a few less than stellar PJ shows I've been to i.e. Hershey 03 and Hartford 06.

Some people need to remember that Ed's guitar prowess is limited. He played the songs he could play and was good at it. He has improved as a guitar player. He was great at both L.A. shows.

True, but there are only so many songs he can play solo on a guitar by himself. And the solo shows were more about him and not about PJ.

How many times did he play Parting Ways? Would love to have heard that instead of Millworker three nites in a row.

But I'm still happy with what I saw. :D

It's apples and oranges. This isn't PJ vs STP or something. You're asking if i'd rather be run over by a freight train once, or wrapped up in warm soft bandages and slowly smothered....

Ed solo like this is huge with awesome long-term implications, I hope and pray PJ is still trying to rock out 15-20 years from now. But I Guarantee Ed will be on a stage for a long, long, long time....

So how bout, right now, PJ just once? Or John Lennon were he alive? Bob Dylan?

They're almost on a par with me, with PJ getting the slight edge.

I think Ed is one of the most talented all-round musicians of our generation and we're lucky to have him. Not having Ed in the 90s and Os, would be like the 60s without Bob Dylan. IMO.

I loved Ed's solo shows. They weren't PJ shows, which I'm glad for. I didn't want to go see Eddie playing a bunch of PJ songs and bring special guests in for a majority of his set to play, essentially, a PJ show.

I wanted an intimate, moving, cerebral and emotional experience, and that's what I got -- more so than at any other show I have EVER been to, PJ included.

That being said, I would rather see a Pearl Jam show than an Ed solo show, but I would love for Ed to do a little solo acoustic set before the opener OR somewhere in PJ's set, just because it would bring a completely different -- beautiful -- element to the show.

And, I'll be honest, 100 is obviously hyperbole, but I'd rather have been at EVERY Ed show on his mini-tour than at 1 Pearl Jam show. Flame away if you want, but they were that special to me.

I agree, I would not want to see Ed do a solo PJ show. Maybe he did not mix it up a lot, but I hope he does come east, I will try and go to a couple of the solo shows. And I think almost everyone here would rather see the full band than any one of them solo.

I would rather go to a full band show no doubt, but I would have rather seen 1 solo Ed show than all of the east coast shows.

But then again I would rather see the whole east coast tour than see 2 Ed shows.

To not see any of these solo shows would have been a huge dissappointment.

I touched on this in a different thread and I can'y help but revisit it here. I love that the main complaint with the solo tour seems to be that he didn't change up the setlist enough. You know how you could have avoided this "travesty"? Got to one freaking show!! These were small venues with a limited number of available tickets. Let someone else enjoy the experience. I don't blame the Ten Club site for the ticket issues I blame those who filled there carts with multiple shows while completely diregarding anyone else. Now you have the nerve to get online and complain that hearing Millworker three times was too much!? It seems likely to me that you were the same ones shouting out song requests on a nightly basis. I believe Eddie referred to you as "Pricks". Pretty accurate.

On a positive note.....LA 1 was amazing and just the latest chapter in a long story of great shows and great music by Pearl Jam and pretty much all of the bands that they have chosen to open for them.

Agreed. Except not all of us who went to multiple shows are complaining. I have no problem at all with hearing *mostly* the same songs on consecutive nights. I fucking loved hearing Arc, Throw Your Arms Around Me, Porch, Hard Sun, etc. twice. Fucking LOVED it.

And, to give Ed credit, he DID tinker with the setlist a bit EVERY night, at least when he was playing the same city twice. I think we have all gotten spoiled with Pearl Jam's hugely significant setlist changes. Let us not lose sight of the fact that there are MANY bands out there who go out and play the EXACT same setlist every night, regardless of their vast repoitore of material. Hell, one of my former favorite bands -- Live -- has been playing essentially the exact same setlist for the last few YEARS. So Eddie, with his limited catalog and solo experience, should be commended for not submitting to "sameness" every night, I think.

In addition, he went out of his way to make nearly every city special in some way. From the song he wrote for Santa Cruz to the poem he read for Santa Barbara to the birthday song for his Grandma Margaret in L.A. to the ovation for his mother in San Diego -- not to mention the Sean Penn / Mike McCready / Jack Irons / Ben Harper / Emile Hirsch appearances -- nearly every city got their own special "moment" to remember. How many other artists or bands would do that shit?

From the descriptions of his shows right now I'd rather see Ed solo in a small theatre than PJ in a large auditiorium. A cool change and something VERY new.

Its just me, but I really can't say that about PJ over the last few tours. Some cool new tunes, but nothing as original as what Ed's doing solo lately. No slam on the band...but right now seeing Ed solo would take precidence for me.

Even if certain folks thought Ed got repetitious.....

EV solo was not a PJ show. It is a different kind of show PERIOD (the energy, the mood, etc.)...you cannot "compare" the two. What Ed did was incredible. He wanted to show his musical influences and a different dimension to his skillset (I had no idea he could play guitar like that)...with all due respect, next time (if there is a next time), I sincerely hope everyone looking for an unplugged PJ set just don't come...it sucks that Ed's association with Pearl Jam attracts so many idiots (the shouters and drunks) - anyone else think that maybe he didn't switch up the set because it took a lot of time and practice to get comfortable enough to get up there alone and play 25-30 songs? IF Ed decides to keep doing this and release more of his own material, I have no doubts the sets will loosen up - I just hope the crowd learns to shut the fuck up.

  • It must be looked at it in proper context. It WAS NOT a Pearl Jam show.
Given the choice, I would definitely pick a PJ show over an Eddie show, but I would have killed to have been able to see Eddie and I would have enjoyed because he did exactly what I would have expected him to do
