This Band......

  • I was 11 years old and knew practically nothing about good music, listening mostly to whatever was on the radio or my dad's classic rock at home. Then my cousin got Vs. for his birthday and introduced me to the band that would forever change my life and define my youth. From the first time I heard that cassette, I was completely and utterly addicted to PJ. And then I realized how absolutely beautiful Ed was, inside and out, and became increasingly obsessed with his words, his wisdom. I plastered my bedroom walls with PJ posters and PJ became my religion. Their music was the stabilizing force through my teen years, into adulthood. Each album felt as if it was written for me, and each was an intrical part of each stage of my life. I feel connected to PJ with my very soul. I honestly don't know what I would do without them! Oh yeah, and Mike McCready is a fucking ROCK STAR!!

  • As a freshman in high school I rode the wave of Grung/Alternative Music and was listening to Primus, Fugazi, and Black Flag and heard Ten for the first time. As someone that has always been about listening to the whole album I thought that Pearl Jam was a band that could put an entire album together. Unfortunatly for me I was perhaps a little too young and sheltered for my parents to allow me to see them live. By the time I was driving they began to fight Ticketmaster and I was never able to score tickets. I dreamed of the day that I would experience what I had heard so much about. I saw them for the first time from the pit at RFK for TIbetan Freedom Concert and was not disapointed. I will never stop following this band, show #10 from the Wrigley PIt is going to be epic.

some ass on his cell phone (who, i swear to god, stole MY seats, so we were sitting BEHIND them) got struck by lightning, and had the whole show cancelled, and pearl jam, being the devotees of rock they are, gave practically their ENTIRE set to RCHP (not to mention REM pretty much CANCELLED their set) and you were "not dissapointed" ??? B fucking S. I was PISSED. P-I-S-S-E-D.

But yeah. otherwise. What this guy said. (although i *was* lucky enough -- after 100 entries by envelope -- to get tickets to see them at DAR Hall in DC for my 15th birthday. *literally* TO the day oooh yeah)
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

1992: Alive was played on the radio. Ed's voice attracted my attention. That amazing guitar solo in the end  ! That day I found my favourite band.
Let's say knowledge is a tree, yeah.
It's growing up just like me.

Never seeing the band live before PJ20, it's been seeing them live on video via YouTube that really got me wanted to listen more and more, then it's been like an infectious disease I've wanted to shake from that moment until now. Even when I listen to other great bands, even those influential to Pearl Jam in one way or collectively, I always gravitate right back.

Here's how I see Pearl Jam and why I think they're the best band in the world...

Ed's being interviewed by a reporter after Pinkpop 1992, and, instead of acting like a righteous rock star, who just blew away, what, seventy-thousand people, he wants to share his Polaroid shots taken and talk about wanting to go back to playing small clubs again.
    Posimists. Fuck the pessimists...fuck'em.
