Ok.. Bear with me here.. I just want to know..
I am a glutton for knowledge, I love to know odd little things.
So since there is a shit ton of people from all OVER the world
following one band... I figured it'd be cool as fuck to know
everyone's personal reason...
I have followed PJ for 22 yrs, because they never fail to teach
me lessons that help me become a better me. They support
a lot of the same causes I do, and have always been big on giving
back! They're intelligent, they have something to say.. And never
back down from saying it. They share their worlds with us, letting
the words and the music become ours.. Like gifts..

So why do YOU follow them?

I was a big fan of Pearl Jam early really up to like 1998 went to a lot of shows, and my life got side tracked, got involved with drugs the wrong girls, really lost touch with the music for years, but I got to go to the Las Vegas show at the MGM Grand in 2006 and it was like reawakening a part of me that had been lost, I am sure if I had not gone to that show, I wouldn't be here to day, the music really saved my life, that is why Amongst The Waves means so much to me, Pearl Jam really saved my soul literally, and Pearl Jam radio is the best 20 bucks I spend each month, it is truly a blessing, it helps remember where I have been and where I have come from

I have never experienced a band that has embodied music as this entire "entity" or world of positivity. They are more than a band, they are actually more like a way of life and how to view life in general. When you have a band that makes music that you can listen to through the ups and downs, and that you can truly turn to in moments of happiness, sadness, perspective, and guidance - it's something special.

I've loved pj since the beginning and seeing them in a tiny venue in 1992 changed my perspective on a lot of things (not to mention zapped the hearing in my left ear :D). They really embodied every emotion I had going on in my 17 year old self. It was just the right time for me. The music became very important and instructive as I matured beyond that angry, heartbroken and energy filled teen. My brother and i share this love of pj so its a nice bond between us. When I started having kids I took a step back from music in general. I also went through a period of spiritual exploration. I lost touch with pj for a few years but always knew when they were playing near me. I remember sitting in the rocking chair more than once with a babe sleeping in my arms knowing that pj was playing only a few minutes away and knowing that someday I'll see them and experience that again. When I started to feel drowned by all the people I love ( it can happen) I knew I had to find something for myself again. Re enter pj and my little brother. I reconnected with the music and old songs took on new meaning and new songs had me saying " yes that's exactly how I feel!" It was like pj grew up while I was temporarily gone and off growing up too. EV solo last fall blew my mind. It was my first time to see any of them in 14 years  EPIC i tell you!! BLEW MY F****ING MIND!! I can't wait to see them again this fall. My head may explode from happiness.

Gosh there are so many reasons both personally (emotionally) and in general. The more general reasons for me:

    1. I started college (left home for the first time) in the Fall of 1991. Basically Pearl Jam has "been with me" my entire adult life. Also, Pearl Jam musically characterizes a really great time in my life (during college) when I met my wife and all my closest friends to this day.

    2. I honestly was never a very good "music fan". Kind of person that would play a particular cassette tape (haha) or cd and skip to "the good songs". It was literally impossible for me to sit through any band's album. It was ALWAYS different with Pearl Jam for whatever reason (um, they're better than everyone else probably has a lot to do with it!). To me, they've always just been sort of magical and whether the song was an experiment, hit, or rarity, their music has always kept my full attention.

    3. It is easy to root for them because they really are the good guys. I'm not suggesting that I am in any sort of perfect alignment with their views, that's an entirely different dimension, but whether or not you agree with everything they stand for, the way the carry themselves, stick up for their principles, and just generally go about their business are definitely reasons why they are so easy to love and respect. I.e. they are in direct opposition to that athlete on your favorite team that keeps sort of embarrassing you!

Good Question. I follow them because during my teens years Eddie Vedder/Pearl Jam was to me what Pete Townshend/ The Who were to him during his adolescence. This band has always spoken to me and are able to put to music exactly how I felt and still do feel. They continue to put on one of the most powerful and inspiring rock concerts of any performer to date. They are also, in my opinion, one of the last great rock bands.

Wow I kind of didn't expect this to take off like
this really, but it is as unique as this band itself, to see
how they have changed each of us, by affecting us.
And the best part is... I have always gotten the feeling
that this was their goal!! Keep them coming! It's so cool
getting to see all these different perspectives!

    they never fail to teach
me lessons that help me become a better me.
This is a big reason for me. When a band can teach you about your own self--that's a freaking powerful thing.

Their music is everything and more to me. Comforting, and escape, always there for me, a source of pure joy...there is nothing that compares. You hear the music and it feels like home.

They've been with me since 1992 and never left my side.
Well, except we had a little disagreement from 06-08, but I digress.
    Why do I love them?

    Ed is the perfect storyteller.
    Stone is the consummate peacekeeper.
Mike is the freaking madman badass.
    Jeff is the brutal foundation.
Matt is the forager & the finisher.

Their music is the soundtrack to my life from my 20s to today.

  • 1) Mainly because every word sung and every note ever played has come from a genuine and honest place. I first heard them when I was 14, the kind of age when hearing great music for the first time has a powerful and lasting effect. (It's also the sort of age when the words to a song like 'Black' resonate only too well!) It's music made thats clearly made by human beings, not rock stars. Theres been times in my life when all I've had on my side were Pearl Jam records. They have soundtracked a large part of my life, from the lowest, most despairing points, to the greatest and most life-affirming ones. That means something.

    2) Because of their integrity and willingness to fight for and support the causes they believe in, whether charitable or political.

    3) Because they love you back, and it shows.

    4) Because they've lasted and stayed together because they clearly believe in what they do and theres a purpose to it.

    5) Well, they make f**king good music don't they!

I was drowning in a pool full of bad 80's shit rock and TEN saved me i was pulled out by Release ;) it was as if Ed himself reached hi's hand out and said come with us will never let you down and you know what they never have :)
jesus greets me looks just like me ....
  • As a freshman in high school I rode the wave of Grung/Alternative Music and was listening to Primus, Fugazi, and Black Flag and heard Ten for the first time. As someone that has always been about listening to the whole album I thought that Pearl Jam was a band that could put an entire album together. Unfortunatly for me I was perhaps a little too young and sheltered for my parents to allow me to see them live. By the time I was driving they began to fight Ticketmaster and I was never able to score tickets. I dreamed of the day that I would experience what I had heard so much about. I saw them for the first time from the pit at RFK for TIbetan Freedom Concert and was not disapointed. I will never stop following this band, show #10 from the Wrigley PIt is going to be epic.

It was Ed's voice that attracted me first. In fact it never left me. Then with each album
it was as though they sang about my life and to my life. Every loss, every joy
and all the stuff in between. They never disappointed, I always listened.
The years just flew by as they do.

Pearl Jam will always be with me.
I like that the most, knowing I will have Ed's voice in my head when I leave this world.
    God's plan.
