i got an advance copy from a friend that works at a local shop
im not going to go into too much detail since most havnt heard it my favorites so far are
hung on a hook, phantom limb, breath on a window and choke
overall on one listen its a good album i dont know if i like it as much as bgwtb i really wish william was more of the front man and jerry would take a little more of backseat i like jerrys solo stuff but i like alice in chains more and alice was more layne for the majority of the records so when william has that chance to shine and jerry is 2nd to him it sounds more like alice to me if that makes sense
hung on a hook is a perfect example of the diverse sound they can have with william singing more he has more range overall

Damn, I was hoping that William would have more of a role on this album. Still looking forward to giving it a listen though.

I thought it was ok, nothing great though. Most of the songs sounded the same. I dug Phantom Limb a lot though. Will have to give it a few more listens i guess

It hasnt grabbed me like Black Gives Way to Blue did, I'm hoping its a grower. Some tracks that I like but a few of them just seem to blend into each other. I wish Duvall got more time on lead vocals.
"...though my problems are meaningless....that don't make them go away...."
The good songs on this album are VERY good. Although there are more "meh" songs on this album then any of
But there are a few killer tracks on this one. Just not too many.

That's pretty much my take - love Phantom Limb, the rest just felt repetitive to me.
BGWTB I heard it first at a listening party, the first things I said was that it was droney and ploddy and boring.
Exact same things I said about TDPDH.
HOWEVER, I like BGWTB now, some good tracks etc on it. Not mind blowing but good. But this Devil's album is just so dull, no strong lead vocals, or riffs that smack you in the face like Them Bones or Dam That River. There isn't even a nice softer song like Jar of Flies stuff or Down in a hole. Even BGWTB has Your Decision and the self title track which are both excellent songs.
I hope I take a uturn on Devils but just don't see it after quite a few listens. No songs stand out to me apart from Stone. Is it a coincidence that it is the song I've heard the most or the fact its got a good bold riff, and a nice chorusy phase bit and a good ole lovely Jerry solo...I don't think so.
The album is definitely a grower - didnt make a great impression on the first or second listen, but there's some really strong stuff on there, albeit a few weaker tracks. One thing I'm a bit disappointed with is the lack of a quality acoustic song like "When The Sun Rose Again" from BGWTB. Good album but not a classic by any means.
"...though my problems are meaningless....that don't make them go away...."
Took a long drive with it last night around twilight (on my work route) and I'm really satisfied with it. I was already a fan of Hollow and Stone... Upon first listen of unfamiliar songs, Lab Monkey and Phantom Limb stood out the most. Phantom Limb alone is worth the price of the album. I listened to the whole thing again on the way back and the songs that didn't stand out as much the first time sunk in a little more. It's heavy, dark and atmospheric... Is it drone-y? Yeah, but I'm into that, at least when AIC does it.
First impression: My god, what happened? This album sucks. It's nowhere close to BGWTB, and certainly light years from the original stuff. I loved Stone and Phantom Limb, but the rest just sounded all the same to me.
After listening on good headphones at work, and then driving around listening to it a few times: It's a definite grower. I've actually come around, and after 3 or 4 listens, I may like it better than BGWTB. Not sure why my first impression was so negative, but I guess these songs just don't hit you right away. However, there's some excellent music in there, and dare I say very few fillers.
Hollow and Pretty Done start off the album pretty 'meh' for me, never was a fan of the leadoff track, despite its popularity. After that, it really picks up.
Stone is a great song, great video and should have been released before Hollow, IMO.
Voices has some nice harmonizing with Jerry/William and some great guitar work over the acoustic rhythm. Doesn't have the same feel as older AIC acoustics, but a good song in its own right.
Not a big fan of the title track, it's kind of a droning plodder (like a dinosaur?), but it's better than the opening track. Listenable, but will probably be a skipper soon.
Lab Monkey sounds like it easily could have been off Dirt, and held up well as an average track on that album.
Low Ceiling could have my favorite verse melody/delivery on this album. Nice little clean but simple solo. Not a big fan of the chorus, sounds a little mailed in, but the verses really make this song. Sounds more like a Jerry solo song though.
Breath on a Window might by my favorite right now. The verse sounds a little oddly upbeat for an AIC song, but its catchy. Chorus is very average. That outro though, wow. The breakdown around 2 minutes in, leading to the solo and then build up into that amazing outro really sends this song over the top for me. That final 3 minutes is the best part of this album, IMO.
Guitar tone on Scalpel sounds like something off of Sap, but again a little more upbeat in tone. Overall it's another that could be off a Jerry solo album, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Decent song, but not as good as Voices when it comes to the slower songs. Probably will end up being skippable.
Phantom Limb - I knew this would be one of my favorites when I first heard it. Sounds like it has more William than any of the other songs. That haunting refrain of 'Ill just haunt you like a phantom limb' in the middle and then as the outro is another highlight of the album, second to that of Breath on a Window. Classic AIC.
Hung on a Hook, to me, is going for the Down in a Hole/Private Hell sort of feel. While it doesn't hold up to them in my view, this is a very good song. I love that droning guitar repeated at the end for the last few minutes, very hypnotic and powerful. They're really hitting it out of the park with these outros.
Choke, while not as good as the BGWTB closer, is a decent song, albeit another very Jerry solo sounding song.
Overall, I think the slower, droning pace of this album is the reason it's not an immediate impact. Given a few chances, it really comes alive. IMO, the big difference with BGWTB is with that album they were really trying to bring back AIC, write about Layne and recreate that old sound. With this, they're more comfortable and I think Jerry is more free to just do what he does, which ultimately will probably sound more like the direction he was going with his solo albums, which is why there are more songs that sound that way here than on BGWTB. All in all, I think this will top the previous album in my mind.

With Alice in Chains‘ experiencing a successful return with ‘Black Gives Way to Blue,’ the band cleared one very significant hurdle, and with their new album, ‘The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here,’ the veteran rockers prove they can sustain their excellence. While all the things you would expect from Alice in Chains — sludgy guitars, haunting melodies, dark lyrics — are on the disc, the band shows they can still put a fresh spin on their sound.
Most fans are already familiar with ‘Hollow,’ the dark and moody album opener with Jerry Cantrell‘s gritty guitar, and ‘Stone,’ the squalling rocker with a killer bass line from Mike Inez bass and a thumping drum track from Sean Kinney, but it’s saying something that the disc continues to hit its stride as a listening experience well after the two singles have passed.
Beginning with ‘Voices,’ the album’s fourth track, the band begins to vary things up. The song, which features trademark harmonizing between Cantrell and William DuVall along with a more acoustic flare, is one of the album’s standout cuts and seems destined for radio play. ‘Voices’ also leads perfectly into the album’s title track, ‘The Devil Put Dinosaurs,’ which features mesmerizing guitar work that draws in the listener, while lyrically the track takes on the intolerance that can come with differing viewpoints. The epic cut also features a significant shift from the haunting opening into a more rocked out finale that includes a great Cantrell guitar solo and ends with Kinney’s drumming really driving the track home.
While Alice in Chains definitely does “dark” well, songs like ‘Low Ceiling’ and ‘Breath on a Window’ offer a catchier, faster-paced alternative and deliver the perfect change of pace needed mid-album. The disc also features such late record standouts as the more acoustic-guitar based and melody-filled ‘Scalpel,’ the metal-infused ‘Phantom Limb’ and the stellar mid-tempo closer ‘Choke.’
All in all, ‘The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here’ gives longtime Alice in Chains fans the harmonies, darkness and skilled instrumentation they’ve come to love on a disc that holds its own among the band’s classic albums.
Two listens in and it's not bad. I think it will grow on me over time.
