I'm sure there are quite a few people like me who are just taking hand luggage when they fly cos it's a short trip and I don't need the extra hassle. So I rang the airline yesterday to see if I could bring my digital camera cos I know how strict they are but they said yes. I know ya can't bring shampoos, make up, toothpaste, etc but just wondering are there any other obvious things that we shouldn't bring with us?
The Astoria??? Orgazmic!

Cut and paste job from the RyanAir e-mail I got the other day...

HAND BAGGAGE RESTRICTIONS – FLIGHTS FROM THE UK, POLAND, FRANCE & ITALY

Please see below for the new hand baggage restrictions for flights from the UK,
Poland (to the UK), France & Italy (to the UK)

Hand Baggage Allowance (10kg per person)

Each passenger is permitted to carry ONE item of hand baggage up to 10kg (bag
dimensions have been reduced for all flights departing from the UK). If you are
departing from a UK airport and in accordance with the UK Department for
Transport, the following reduced cabin baggage dimensions apply - 45cm (length),
35cm (width) and 16cm (depth). These dimensions include the wheels, handles,
    side pockets, etc.
Passengers who arrive at a UK airport with hand baggage exceeding the above
dimensions will be required to pay an additional checked bag fee or if they are
over the maximum 20kg baggage allowance per person, an excess baggage fee will
be charged of £5.50/€8 per kilo (or local currency equivalent).

General Information on Checked Baggage Allowances

A checked baggage allowance of 20kg per passenger applies to each customer who
has paid a checked bag fee. Any passenger checking in baggage exceeding their
checked baggage allowance of 20kg per person will be charged an excess baggage
fee of £5.50/€8 per kilo (or local currency equivalent).
Passengers may not use the unused checked baggage allowance of other passengers.
No pooling/sharing of the checked baggage allowance is permitted, even within a
party travelling on the same Confirmation Number.

    Checking In for Flights

Passengers should check in no later than 2 hours prior to their scheduled flight
departure, to allow sufficient time to check in and to clear security. Flights
cannot wait for passengers delayed at security points.
Please see hand baggage restrictions for each country listed below:

Hand Baggage Restrictions for Flights Departing from the UK and Poland

Each passenger is permitted to carry ONE item of hand baggage through the
airport security point. The maximum dimensions must not exceed a 45cm (length),

handles, side pockets, etc.). All items carried by passengers will be x-ray
    screened.
N.B. These restricted hand baggage dimensions are smaller than our published
    hand baggage dimensions.

As a result of these restrictions - extra seats cannot be purchased for the
carriage of musical instruments, wedding dresses etc

Passengers carrying hand baggage that is larger that the above dimensions will
not be permitted to enter the security restricted area and will not be permitted
to return to the check-in area. In order to ensure that you will be accepted for
entry to the security restricted area, please ensure that you fully comply with
    the following:

    Cabin/hand baggage MUST NOT contain:

    Any cosmetics
    Any toiletries
    Any liquids
    Any drinks
    Cigarette lighters

    foam, aerosols, etc.)
Nothing must be carried in pockets.

Cabin baggage CAN contain the following:

Electronic equipment, including laptops, mobile phones and portable music and
    DVD players.
Prescribed medicines in liquid form e.g. diabetic medicines
Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle MUST be tasted by
    the parent)
All electronic equipment will need to be removed from the item of hand baggage
    and screened separately.
Pushchairs and walking aids will be permitted but must be x-ray screened and
    searched.

...London Doesn't Call Anymore... (rip joe)

Yes, I have been to some Pearl Jam concerts. Several of them.
  • yeah, each airline has varying lists... so it's best to check it out on their websites
die on a hilltop.. eyeing the crows,
waiting for your lids to close..
but you want to watch as they peck your flesh..
Ironic that they go for the eyes first
  • about this whole hand luggage malarky. If you're flying through London, they are brutal. They've reduced the dimensions of hand luggage such that now it's only about the size of a laptop bag. Also, you're not allowed to carry any form of liquid, soaps, shampoos, even bottled water, deodourant, any makeup, lighters, matches etc. I travelled from Gatwick to MArseille and had to check my bag in, a bag which i've always, and i mean always, carried as hand luggage, coz it was too big. There was no problem on the way back from Paris though. Carried it as hand luggage. But then again, i did fly Paris to Dublin. But back on point, they're brutal in london!!! And god forbid you look a little middle eastern and have a goatee (like me!!!).
If Pearl Jam was a beer, they'd probably be the best beer in the world!!

    Thanks for that!

I was going to check the site before starting to pack, so it saved me the time. :)

so listen to me for once

I had all the hassle in the world at Edinburgh airport... shoes off, belt off, the lot!!! no liquids, etc etc etc... had to put my hand baggage into the hold as Mrs Dunk had perfumes, etc!!

    on the way back...

Dublin - Edinburgh.... not one checked in piece of baggage at all... it was all allowed on as hand luggage... when i queried this with the check-in desk and said "but i had to book it in on the way over" she replied "yeah thats true, but Ireland is a neutral country... we're not at war with anyone so we're not a target"

SO... she then told me that the strict security was only for flights leaving the UK to anywhere... but that the flights from Ireland to UK were being treated as normal.. as were flights from Ireland to Europe... (i think extra security was in place for all incoming flights to the US regardless of country where flight was taken)

Burtschips, Wash, etc... they all had hand luggage on them as well... we could take anything on board!!

    hope this helps :)

Flying Dublin to Leeds, I checked in online before I went, cos I needed the extra sleep. I brought my bag on board with me. I had a lighter and lip balm in it, nothing was checked, although security threatened to make me take off my boots!!

Coming back London to Dublin... everything was gone! Water was taken off me, my strawberry lipbalm, my boots had to come off (bear in mind I was comin back from a festival - they were filthy!) I really didn't mind though - nobody argued; Its not the most wise thing to do. And didn't take all that long from Stansted anyway.

Still no liquids, though Dunk. I had to check in my hand luggage because I had perfume (which bought duty free!) and I didn't want to leave it there (not at £50 a bottle!)

Can you not take with you things you buy at the DutyFree? I'm thinking water, hand cream, stuff like that.

My friend flew back from Stanstead to Pisa and took on board water bought once past security...

but.. you shouldn't have any hassle cause you're not travelling to or from the US or the UK..

cause when I was over there, no hassle at all. (well, if you don't count that flight of mine getting cancelled when I was trying to get home. )

    or am I completely wrong?

Nah, I'm bringing the bare minimum. Just clothes by the looks of it and it's only for a weekend so how much clothes do I need?

lgt, yeh ya can, she bought perfume coming over but then when she was going back they made her check it in but she'd only bought it a couple of days earlier if that makes sense? :o

I brought my old school bag with me for the European Touring Bus... and had to check it in; the lady laughed at me when I said I intended to carry it on. In any case, there was deodorant and toothpaste in it, so I'd have had to check it in anyway.

Flew from Heathrow last week and they were pulling people out of the queue to go through a trial full body scanner (luckily for me they only seemed to be pulling out men) but there was a sign saying if you refused to take part in the trial then you would be subjected to a full body search
