I saw the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" this weekend and am now a little obsessed with the musician Rodriguez who is the subject of the movie.

Here are links to the trailer and an article...

How are you a longtime fan? When did you first hear of him?

I heard about the documentary in passing recently, probably because it's nominated for an Oscar, but never heard his music until last week when a friend at work was listening to it.

Saw the movie yesterday, bought the soundtrack to the movie today and played it on a loop all afternoon. Love his tone.

I wonder if there are any South African Pearl Jam fans on here who can attest to his popularity in their country.

I grew up with parents who had quite an extensive record collection. 8-) I remember hearing "Sugar Man" on the turntable a few times and when I lived in Australia back in 2000, I was re-introduced to him by a flatmate. The guy had a cult following not only in S. Africa, but Australia as well.

I'd read that he was also popular in Australia.

Apparently he's performing at Coachella and I received an email earlier today that he's performing at the Beacon in NYC soon too. Hope I get the chance to see him perform.

"I Think Of You" and "I Wonder" have played many times the last two days.

    Loved the documentary.

I'm from South Africa and its true, we grew up thinking that Rodriguez was a star around the world.

Found myself crying in the cinema while watching it - and I wasn't alone!

He's touring South Africa again next month and I am so disappointed that I am out of the country.

Incredible. That moment when he walks out on stage for the first time to the bass line of "I Wonder" broke me. The power of a crowd cheering at a concert... amazing.

"Cause" is the song playing on a loop today.

Saw the film in August, knew he'd be playing in my town soon after. KNEW in my heart I should by a ticket then cuz it was not a big venue and knew it would sell out - buzz kept growing bigger and bigger. But... Didn't buy tix, it was WAY sold out, and I missed it. Probably won't get that chance again!

Cold Fact is amazing, and his humility is astounding. Such a cool film.

You might get another chance, he's touring all over the world it seems. Here's a link to upcoming tour dates.

Looking forward to his Keswick performance on 4/9/13 . It'll definitely be easier to enjoy his performance there than when I'm one of what'll no doubt be a huge throng at Coachella trying to do so.

The documentary is nominated for an Oscar at the Academy Awards. The director was also just honored by the Director's Guild for the film. Maybe Rodriguez will perform at the Oscars? Maybe?

Anyone else notice he was wearing an Easy Street Records tshirt during an interview in the movie?
Hope the movie wins the Oscar this weekend and generates even more interest in his music.

    Oscar win bump.

Love it. Also love this... Backstage, producer Simon Chinn explained that Rodriguez wasn’t at the ceremony because “he genuinely doesn’t want to take credit for this film. ... He’s genuinely a humble man and he wanted to stay at home in Detroit and watch it on television.”

So weird, but you know, sometimes you can be big in Belgium. :)

I think it's all about how audiences find access into music.

Hi all. I'm a new member to the Rodriguez 'fanclub'(not really, I mean figuratively. I don't know if there actually is a fanclub but you get what I mean)!! I watched the movie on my flight back from Oz last weekend & WOW! What a dude!! & how insane he didn't get popular(except in South Africa). I'm playing him on Spotify now to check him out some more. He played here in Auckland a couple of weeks ago & a friend went but I hadn't caught the buzz yet(+ had rather blown my concert budget for last summer already :lol: ). Anyway, I'm pleased to join the Rodriguez brigade & may he finally get recognition he deserves. :)
