Never really warmed to the RHCP, I have always liked the singles they have released off this album but never bothered looking checking out the rest of the album.
Bought this album recently and it is quite catchy, very cool tracks which I can listen to again.
John Frusciante is a cool guitarist.

Are their 80's era albums worth listening to?
The songs off their later albums don't do anything for me, except Tearjerker.
My friend's favourite album is One Hot Minute but all I have read are negative reviews on this album.

There earlier stuff is much different than BSSM and forward. Pure funk and some real crazy grooves. it's good, but nothing compared to Mothers Milk and forward. John Frusciante is an amazing guitarist and he is a major reason why their music changed. Californication, By the way, and Stadium Arcadium are all amazing records worth getting.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

  • Bit of a fanboy for this album, but can take or leave the rest, particularly the newer stuff.

Top quality album, Frusciante is a genius. Check out his first solo album, superb stuff.

For me it's "Mother's Milk" and "Blood Sugar Sex Magik". After that, they lost me (few good moments on "One Hot Minute"). I have always been quite a fan of "Could've Lied" from BSSM, not the typical chilis sound

I think BSSM and Mother's Milk were their peak and haven't really liked much they have done since. Californication was a solid album- but a different sound from early peppers. Didn't mind a selection of songs on One hot Minute.

Was lucky enough to see them on the BSSM tour of Australia and they were awesome, but wouldn't see them now- for me they have lost much of their FUNK.

Scar Tissue is a great book to read though

The songs after under the bridge do nothing for me. The album is probably too long. The rhcp should've made
under the bridge the closing song.

  • Not much of a fan of the band but Blood Sugar is a great album. I wouldn't give the band the time of day these days however.

Haha - me as well. BSSM is still probably my favorite, but I love Mother's Milk.

Never liked One Hot Minute. Liked Californication, then By the Way, and they kind of lost me by Stadium Arcadium. But BSSM is a classic to me and I will always love it.

BSSM is one of my favorite albums of all-time as it was one of the first CDs I ever bought with my own money (I was 11 when it came out in '91). If you like this album, I highly recommend watching "Funky Monks" which is the making of the album. I never get tired of it.

Recently saw them for New Year's in Vegas and in my opinion, they still bring it (my 9th RHCP show). Flea is amazing. Even though John Frusciante wasn't the original guitarist, I will always remember him as the classic guitarist of the band. I do enjoy Josh a lot more now. I saw them at the very beginning of their current tour, which were among their first few shows with Josh as lead guitarist (he toured with them for Stadium Arcadium, adding guitar side stage). He's definitely come into his own in the past year and a half. I was really amazed at how well he played "Snow (Hey Oh)" in Vegas, among others.

Freaky Stykey is kick ass, uplift mofo party plan too but mothers milk is killer. John Frusciante could be the best guitar player of the times,

Start of with "Johnny kick a hole in the sky" or "catholic school girls rule"
    You'll be hooked.
One hot minute is different as they had Dave Navarro playing, Frusciante was on a heroin lost decade tour.

I haven't seen them this tour, but watched some taped performance right when the newest album came out and I thought he did a respectable job. He doesn't have the guitar pyrotechnics or flat out skill, but I thought his transitions from rhythm to lead were much smoother than I'd ever heard from Froosh.

I really like everything with Frusciante from BSSM til he left, By the Way being my favorite. I think they needed to scale back Stadium Arcadium for it to be a truly great album, but there are alot of great tunes there too.

Not a huge RHCP fan. BSSM is kinda hit and miss for me. I agree it's a little too long. Freaky Styley is the only other album of theirs I have and it's the one I'll listen to over BSSM.

I like that song and My Lovely Man but the three songs before that haven't done nothing for me.....yet.

    BSSM was the classic

  • I didn't get that into BSSM until it was out quite awhile. For some reason, "By the Way" was the album I really got hooked on, just hit me perfectly at the right time and place. Not too big on the albums after that.

This made me think though, pretty surprised that BSSM hasn't had a "super deluxe" or at least a simple remaster release recently like so many other albums. Am I alone here, or does the original CD quality of it sound pretty poor to others too now?

BSSM might be a deserted island album for me. I listened to that tape so many times that I literally wore it out in my walkman.

The singles off it are amazing and once you get a feel for the flow of the album, the funkiness of the other songs makes the album whole.

As previously mentioned pre BSSM sound was a lot different. They started to develop the sound with Mothers Milk but anything earlier than MM sounds like a completely different band that I just cannot get into.

Californication to me is second best to BSSM. Anything after Cali is hit or miss and anything before BSSM is "This is the RHCP?"
