Authorities in India have been preparing for the possibility her death could ignite more protests after riot police were deployed on the capital's streets in the wake of the attack amid simmering anger at the daily dangers women face.
The 23-year-old was airlifted to Singapore on Thursday after she was attacked by six men on a bus in New Delhi on December 16, raped, hit with an iron bar, and thrown from the vehicle.
Some Indian medics had criticised the decision to move her.
"We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4.45 am (2045 GMT) on 29 December 2012," Kelvin Loh, the chief executive of Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital, said in a statement.
"Her family and officials from the High Commission of India were by her side."
The woman had remained in an extremely critical condition since being admitted to the hospital, Loh said, with doctors mounting a last-ditch battle overnight to save her life.

"Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days," Loh said.
"She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."
India's High Commissioner to Singapore T.C.A. Raghavan said the woman's family was "shattered" by her death.
"The scale of her injuries (was) very great," Raghavan told reporters at the hospital.
"It was very trying for the family. The girl of course was unconscious... I must say they (the family) bore the entire process with a great deal of fortitude and a great deal of courage."
He said arrangements were being made for the body to be returned to India in line with the family's wishes.
The decision to fly her out of the country by air ambulance was taken at a meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's cabinet on Wednesday and the government had promised to pay all her medical bills.
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said the government's only concern was to ensure the victim received "the best treatment possible".
But Indian newspapers suggested the authorities, who have struggled to contain the nationwide protests over the attack, were keen to have her transferred out of the country.
An unnamed doctor who was part of a team of experts consulted about the transfer told The Hindu newspaper they had only been asked whether it was safe to move her and not whether it was the best course of action.
"The question was not whether there were any deficiencies in treatment that would be met by moving her... She was being given the best possible care," the doctor was quoted as saying.
Samiran Nundy, chairman of the organ transplant and gastro-surgery department of Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told the paper the transfer made little sense.
"I just can't understand why a critically ill patient with infection in blood and body, high grade fever and on the ventilator is being transferred," he said.
Singh has ordered an official inquiry into the gang-rape and new laws to protect women as well as stiffer penalties for the worst sex crimes.
And he said Delhi police would soon launch a drive to recruit more female officers as a confidence-building measure.
The government has also announced plans to post the photos, names and addresses of convicted rapists on official websites to publicly shame them. The campaign will begin in Delhi, which has been dubbed India's "rape capital".
India was rocked by a wave of protests in the week after the attack, prompting authorities to seal off large parts of the capital and to deploy riot police with water cannons and tear gas.
The Delhi gang-rape has shone the spotlight on a crime that occurs on a daily basis in India, with most such assaults taking place in rural areas.
Police said on Friday that a 15-year-old schoolgirl had her throat slit after being gang-raped in the Pali Muqimpure area of Uttar Pradesh state. A hunt has been launched for three youths after the attack the previous day

Fifteen years old?
I hope she did "pass peacefully".
I hope that if soul and spirit survive the body, both ARE at peace.
So shameful - is that even an appropriate word? ...not in what people are capable of - we all have that animal in us - but fuck those who act on it.
(sorry, read the whole thing as one - didn't fully get that two [more than, obviously] were referenced here )

Was it the penis or the man that caused this crime?

Wait - the MEN.
And their fucked-up mindsets.
He's being an ass and making a reference to his pathetic 'gun' or 'the person' defence supporting the right to own guns.
Aerial... have you no sense of decency? This thread is dedicated to the struggles women currently face in India and the plight of this individual. It deserves a little more than being brushed aside so you can use it as a forum for- once again- spitting out your dribble.
I feel horrible for this girl.

Are Indians also all sodomites and pedophiles, like all Muslims?

I'm not a super pro-death penalty person, but I'm glad India has that option on the table.
A rape culture and people who believe they have the right to dehumanize another human being are to blame. People who believe they are superior and that someone else is "less than" are to blame. People who stand by and do nothing are to blame. People who trivialize rape in a variety of ways and its consequences on a victim are to blame. People who disempower victims by taking their rights away are to blame. People who objectify women's bodies, including by valuing the utility of their bodies as a vessel for the unborn over the value of the whole person are to blame. People who make the justice system such a horrible thing for victims to navigate and therefore deter the reporting of this crime are to blame. People who cut funding and services for victims are to blame.
A penis and a metal bar were the weapons used here, I doubt arming ever Indian woman with both a penis and a metal bar would do much to deter the crime. There needs to be a culture shift the world over on this one.

what a bunch of sick bastards, I truly hope they are tortured and then killed one by one. They are not men but pure evil....
This poor young woman did not deserve this nor to die like she did. May she rest in peace
i am so sad about this
i pray the death dealer finds these monsters in a quick fast hurry
their pains are waiting on them

"Gang-rapes are a daily occurrence in India and many go unreported by their victims who have little faith in an often painfully slow justice system and are deterred by the response they can receive from male police officers."
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2012/1 ... -for-worse
In the US:
54% of rapes/sexual assaults are not reported to the police
12% of those reported lead to an arrest
9% get prosecuted
5% lead to a felony conviction
3% of rapists will ever spend a day in jail
http://rainn.org/get-information/statis ... ting-rates
Even with rape shield laws a lot of victims find themselves being put on trial, making the criminal justice system something that most just don't want to have to navigate. A lot of good changes have happened in the US with the introduction of SART teams and SANE nurses back in the 90's, but we still have a long way to go.
Edit: Also wanted to include info as rape used as a weapon of war for anyone who is interested:

Some recent reports indicate the use of rape in war is decreasing, let's hope that continues.

Not knocking, just having a tough time understanding how India has a rape culture. Have you been to India?
I haven't been to India but I've worked on rape as a global issue for 17 years and have collaborated on consortiums with agencies that specifically serve southeast asian women. I'm certainly not an expert, but it's an issue I am passionate about and put time into trying to understand better.
"I need your strength for me to be strong...I need your love to feel loved"
Google it!
I am A women and would never brush this aside.......Just calling to attention how sick people can be and the fact that there are all types of weapons and ways to hurt or kill people.......I did not see a statement how this tread is dedicated to any cause.....Did you see that statement? Maybe you need to wipe YOUR chin!
um, the title of the thread is about a gang rape victim dying from her injuries. how is that not dedication to that topic?
it was obvious what you were trying to do, and it was quite frankly, offensive.

They say those that are easily offended choose to be offended. We disagree and that's it. It's obvious you both do not understand what I say or just trying to make a big deal over something that does not exist. Move on....
My younger sister was molested at age 9 . Trial for this scumbag never saw completion as he died before a verdict.
Raped at 14. First trial ended in a hung jury. Seems her rage at what happened being shared at a runaway shelter for teens was used by the defense. In the meantime the rapist , his family and friends verbally abused her at school and near home as the rapist lived on the 3rd floor of her apartment building.
She commited suicide about a month and a half before her 16th birthday.

You got called out because you were callous when you made your comment. You knew exactly what you were implying when you wrote it. After people pointed out the fact that you were unsympathetic promoting your terrible gun ownership cause... you backtracked and tried to spin it aggressively towards me.
I'm not going to comment any more on it because others before me have already said everything that needs to be said. When a heart wrenching thread dedicated to a brutal rape and murder victim is presented for discussion... don't press your poorly conceived agenda forward while ignoring the need to be empathetic.
I'm sorry for this Mickey.
