  • I wonder how many gun advocates will continue to redirect conversations about gun violence to issues such as alcoholism and substance abuse? I suppose that anything that deflects attention from gun violence works just as well. Unfortunately, the fact that there are other tragedies in the US doesn't diminish the impact of gun violence on your society. These shootings aren't isolated acts; these are everyday events that are horrifying to many people. The fact that people are irresponsible with alcohol isn't okay. It doesn't make the firearms issue go away either.

He beat his 92 year old grandmother to death and he only served 17 years for that? If the government didn't fail us the first time around in serving justice this whacko would have never been able to do this crap again. :( :x

So what you are saying, and have been spouting since those 20 kids were slaughtered is; how mental health cases are handeled needs to be reviewed, video game censorship should be stricter, violence in the media to be looked at, the judicial system overhauled.....but gun control, that's ok!!!

Not one cognitive argument has been made as to how the rest of the developed world manages to deal with all these issues, along with stricter gun control and yet experiences no where near the same violence. But then, it must be said, not all populations contain the same level of indifference towards those that require the most protection.

You forgot the marijuana argument. That one was a particularly blatant attempt at distraction.

Everyone is a child of the same god in your opinion and belief. If that gives you comfort then more power to you. Stop trying to force it on other people.

Nor should he have still been in prison after his final appeal was heard. This guy is a great example of why I am pro-death penalty. I think it is used too often and in cases where there is a shadow of doubt, but that does not mean it should not be used at all.

Kill your grandmother with a hammer and we keep you alive? Hell no.

The more everyone just focuses on guns the further we drift away. It's not a gun issue its a society issue. Penalizing gun owners for the VERY few kooks out there is so irresponsible and the more the media keeps firing up this ridiculous issue the further they push their liberal agenda.

Lets sum up this case in brutal honesty. Some idiot kills his grandmother in cold blood with a hammer. Goes to prison for 17 years. Ten or however more years later he obtains guns ILLEGALLY, sets his house on fire and shoots the firefighters. Yes increased gun legislation would have stopped all of this from happening.  Yet the media puts this story out there just to fuel this debate and push their agendas.

I did a google search and just pulled the first story. Guy kills his 7 year old son and himself in a drunk driving accident. Also in the accident he kills another couple who have 4 children of their own. Two of them are still in critical condition. Four people killed 2 days before Christmas. Where's the huge headlines for this? This was the first story. There's pages and pages more of drunk driving fatalities for this year alone just for Christmas.

But let's direct what this kook did into a rally for increased gun support. A convicted murderer who should never been spared his life besides being let out of prison. He obtains guns illegally....but increased gun regulation on legal citizens makes perfect sense. :fp:

Jut a random thought....if you watch enough COPS episodes in a row you would be led to believe that every single person the police encounter is a criminal. Sounds a lot like our media when it comes to possessing firearms. I'm still waiting for all of the stories about firearms that didn't cause any issues or provided a blanket of security for US citizens. Should be a VERY LONG article.

That's like trying to dismiss the issue of road safety by pointing out that most car drivers don't accidentally kill people.

There's no sound logic to this 'argument' at all. In fact, it's completely absurd.

And as for firearms providing a 'blanket of security for U.S citizens'; they don't. That's the job of the police. And U.S citizens would feel a greater blanket of security if the government reigned in the NRA so that every time somebody flipped his lid in America they wouldn't have free and easy access to an automatic weapon.

Considering there's more guns in the US than motor vehicles but yet motor vehicles casue more deaths in the US its a very valid argument. Considering that the overwhelming cause of death by gun is from illegal weapons it makes it more staggering. The answer s to stop the criminals not the innocent.

BTW...fully automatic weapons in the US have been banned since 1986. I'm sure you'll say "I meant semiautomatic"....well fully automatics are available here for the right price illegally. So are semi automatics. Thank goodness we had that legislation to solve the fully auto issue though. It really worked.

Edit: I should say "essentially" banned since 1986.

Do you know of a times used vs deaths caused statistic? I think that would be useful here.

This is quite ridiculous actually. A person who possesses a firearm for safety may never fire it (and they surely hope they never will in that capacity). Their firearm is on constant watch for the feeling of their protection. A legal firearm owner using their firearm for protection at their household is using it for every minute they or their family is there. Some people with concealed permits are using it for 24 hours a day.
