Print E–mail WEBSTER, N.Y. - The police chief in Webster, N.Y., says that four firefighters were shot while responding to a blaze in the town near Rochester and that two are dead.

Chief Gerald Pickering says "one or more shooters" fired at the firefighters Monday morning. Officials say they had arrived at the scene of the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore around 6 a.m.

Officials say a fire started in one home and spread to two others and a car. Officials say there is no active shooter at the scene.

  • I posted this in the 'other thread':

Now you got firefighters responding to a scene getting shot and killed.

    http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12 ... e#comments

Armed firefighters? Armed neighbours come out of their houses with their assault rifles and provide cover for the firefighters to put the fire out? Then... everybody scurry back into their homes?

Geez, man. To argue against gun control has got to be one of the most asinine positions a person could take- it's almost 'cult like'... to be so obtuse to the reality of the now.

Take some responsibility: get the fuking guns off the streets. You won't get them all right away- I'll concede that; but by eliminating ammunition sales... you can curb much of the anticipated (slightly paranoid) problems in the short term.

In 20 years though... when the well has dried up... your kids will be able to send their kids to school with much less fear in everyone's hearts and firefighters can respond to a scene and not get shot doing so.

This is just beyond imagining. There are a handful of fire fighters in my extended family and I have tremendous respect the work they do. That someone would shot at them while responding to a fire is both horrible and truly insane.

  • I'm a NYC firefighter and never thought of having to dodge bullets as I made my way into a burning building, even in the worse of neighborhoods. Although, a pitbull once made a B-line for me, but thankfully he was very friendly.

Anyway, obviously sad beyond words. Seems there is nothing off limits to some people anymore.

IMO, bad people will do bad things, regardless of laws, restrictions and regulations. I don't think we will ever find plausible answers and solutions to these type of actions. Honestly, if I wanted to drive my car into a crowd of people, how can I be stopped? Not that I want to. There are millions of ways to do bad things, and millions of more bad things will be done. I'm using the word "bad" subjectively. There are better words to describe such horrible actions.

There are measures our government can take, I think, but regardless, these cowardly acts will always be part of society. Just hope for the best.

Agreed - and hoping for the best is what I've been doing. Sounds simple (maybe even ineffectual?), but it's a start and where my mind is today.

Hope you keep safe this holiday season and beyond.

Agreed. Hoping and praying are ineffectual, at least they are to me. Depends on your beliefs and faith, or lack thereof.

With that said, here's HOPING you and everyone else on here has a safe and happy holiday season and an even better 2013!!!

Maybe the NRA will now call for armed guards to stand on every single street corner in America. Maybe soon they'll also call for armed guards to be posted alongside at basketball courts and football fields alongside the cheerleaders, and will call for them to be placed on the space station, just in case any rogue astronaut makes trouble.

My hearts go out to this whacko's family. Horrible story. But anyone who thinks that this can be made into some argument against guns...well I would just say this is the reason why capital punishment should be supported.

"William Spengler had served more than 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death in 1980 at the house next to where Monday's attack happened".

He beat his 92 year old grandmother to death and he only served 17 years for that? If the government didn't fail us the first time around in serving justice this whacko would have never been able to do this crap again. :( :x

Personally I think this is a good argument for cruel and unusual punishment but if we can't have that then fuck capitol punishment. This guy should have never got out though.

he had the same gun as the newtown shooter...

William Spengler, Killer Of 2 New York Firemen, Had Bushmaster Semiautomatic Rifle

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/2 ... 62646.html

WEBSTER, N.Y. -- Police say the man who lured firefighters in Webster, N.Y., into a deadly ambush had the same make and caliber semiautomatic rifle as the one used in the Connecticut school massacre.

Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said Tuesday that 62-year-old William Spengler was armed with a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle, a .38-caliber revolver and a 12-gauge shotgun in Monday's ambush. Spengler killed two firefighters and wounded two others before fatally shooting himself.

Police have not said which weapon or weapons were used to shoot the firefighters.

Spengler, who set his house on fire to lure the first responders, left a note saying he wanted to burn down the neighborhood and kill as many people as possible. But the note didn't give a motive for the shooting.

No matter what anyone's personal take is on gun ownership (I've said it before- I'm against having them but some people I'm very close to are not) there is no reason for anyone to own weaponry like this one pictured. None. The defense of ownership of weapons like this is sick and sickening.

I wonder how many unfortunate souls will lose their lives and their families will be suffering over the Holidays due to drunk drivers? We'll probably never know without some digging. The press will never make those tragedies National headlines. :(

So what you are saying, and have been spouting since those 20 kids were slaughtered is; how mental health cases are handeled needs to be reviewed, video game censorship should be stricter, violence in the media to be looked at, the judicial system overhauled.....but gun control, that's ok!!!

Not one cognitive argument has been made as to how the rest of the developed world manages to deal with all these issues, along with stricter gun control and yet experiences no where near the same violence. But then, it must be said, not all populations contain the same level of indifference towards those that require the most protection.

I wonder how many gun advocates will continue to redirect conversations about gun violence to issues such as alcoholism and substance abuse? I suppose that anything that deflects attention from gun violence works just as well. Unfortunately, the fact that there are other tragedies in the US doesn't diminish the impact of gun violence on your society. These shootings aren't isolated acts; these are everyday events that are horrifying to many people. The fact that people are irresponsible with alcohol isn't okay. It doesn't make the firearms issue go away either.
