Seriously the most fucked-up thing I've read in a long time. Between this, the weird facebook Cheaper than dirt haters, and the anti-guns-period group, I want to move to a mountain and live like grizzly adams. Really. Somewhere in europe, though. The US is entirely too crazy.

Just when I think a religious group couldn't be more out of touch with reality. I mean, what the fuck. I hope one of the parents seriously takes a good swing at them.

YES! Those people who showed up to block the insane protestors deserve a lot of credit and all the attention whereas the quasi religious group members deserves all the bad karma they've heaped upon themselves.

these fuckers deserve to be thrown in jail. they are systematically torturing folks by showing up spewing their hateful bullshit with the worst timing & at a very sensitive locale. this is complete & utter nonsense. the sheriff should run them out of town with boots up their frickin asses. only after tossing them in jail for awhile.

  • jeez, it's amazing what some people believe. i'm all for having your own beliefs, but just out of a respect for a fellow human being, keep that shit to yourself or a town hall meeting, don't flash your views at a funeral. that's just downright mean.
if you think what I believe is stupid, bizarre, ridiculous or outrageous.....it's ok, I think I had a brain tumor when I wrote that.

You think they would get the message if people started picketing the funerals of their members?

Nate Phelps, Former Westboro Baptist Church Member: They Should Be Barred From Funerals

Nate Phelps, the son of Westboro Baptist Church's founder Fred Phelps, appeared on HuffPost Live Wednesday to discuss the controversial organization's plans to picket funerals of children killed in the Newtown, Conn., elementary school massacre. Nate Phelps left the parish at 18 years old and has since become an advocate for LGBT rights.

Nate left the church with three other siblings who are also estranged from the organization. He currently identifies as an atheist and is a public speaker on child abuse and religion. Phelps has publicly stated that his father was abusive and his church was simply a pulpit for his father to vent his rage.

Currently, Nate serves as the Executive Director of the Centre for Inquiry Canada, a secular organization that educates and advocates for reason and science. He also serves on the board of directors for Recovering from Religion, an organization which offers education and practical support for people moving away from religion.

In his conversation with HuffPost Live, Nate slammed the church for its plans to picket the funerals and touched on Anonymous' hacking of a Westboro Baptist Church Twitter account.

As bad as they are, how are they any different than the NRA. But look more maximum ways to further their agendas after a tragedy, single minded and uncompromising. Both bitch and complain about their rights and take full advantage of their ability to exploit these amendments respectfully.

Both rely on the stupidity and ignorance of others to propel their messages of hate and division.

Only difference is one is marganalised in society and the other revered. Two sides of the same coin, both would be laughed out of most other free developed nations.

Very cool (though I couldn't figure out why some of her comments referred to herself in the third person).

I wonder what prompted her to go her own way?

Good on her - I hope others follow suit.

First off, there isn't one politician who lets a good tragedy go to waste to push their agenda. Why did it take the Newtown killings to make a massive push for new gun control laws? because the democrats saw their opening. Nothing more, nothing less...Aparently it was only important enough to pay lip service to before that.

and can you explain how the NRA has a message of hate and division?

The Westboro baptist church is laughed out of most places in the US. They are allowed to operate because of religious freedom and the freedom of speech we enjoy here. Do you think they have a large following? Are you telling me there are no groups like this in other free developed nations?

i'm not sure i would put the nra in the same league as this church but they are a pretty whacked organization ... holding a massive conference in colorado right after columbine ... and then recently after sandy hook - coming out and blaming video games when they themselves have released a video game? ...

come on ... these fuckers use their influence to push stand your ground laws all over the place that basically allow people to murder other people ...

I agree with you Mike. I sometimes think emotions get the best of us when talking about stories like this as it really disgusted most if not all people.

however, I will give you an example of how the NRA has a message of division and that was the commercial about Obama children.

I am not defending the lobbying influence of the NRA, I think they can be ridiculous.

in their defense however, the massive conference you speak of was actually the annual meetings and was scheduled long before the shootings if I am not mistaken. as a side note, the infamous cold dead hands speech was given in Charlotte not Littleton, where most people attribute it to because of Michael Moore. I am not a member of the NRA, but their tactics are no worse than any other lobbying group IMO...

The westboro baptist church is built on hate and a belief in God's divine wrath striking children down because the US tolerates LGBT folks and pre-marital relations...it is a ridiculous comparison.

I hadn't seen that ad until you brought it up, playing devil's advocate here, do they not have any point in the ad?

IMO, the plan isn't feasible in anyway and not a very good way to present it, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a message of division, at least any more dividing than most political commercials.
