The 12/12/12 Concert

I find it humorous that when the US has a natural disaster we have to parade out a bunch of bands and singers to try and raise money from our own citizens and the rest of the World for help but when other countries have a natural disaster the first country they look to for "humanitarian" help is the US. I remember just last year commercials running in this country to help out Japan with relief for what happened to them. I wonder how many commercials have been running in Japan for us?

On a sidenote, the Red Cross has $78M in unspent donations for Sandy.

    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/brushing-off-criticism-red-cross-shifts-phase-sandy-172912715.html

As the artilcle mentions, this is a drop in the bucket compared to the $60 Billion the Feds have alloted.

(guess I ended up donating to the Sandy relief afterall  )

It's sad and very hypocritical. Foreign countries sit around bashing the US and the protection it affords them but when shit hits the fan we are the first place they look.

  • Maybe Fox News can attack this event as a pro-Obama show like they did the Sandy telethon show that was on right after the storm.. Jackasses...

What would Paul sing of Nirvana's?? Should be interesting.
  • (Checking to see if my avatar works) :D
I've always felt (since we're in neck deep debt) we should start charging for our worldy assistance. Sure we can donate our time but it's not cheap manning the great US ships & planes that are spirited off from one disaster to the next. And don't even get me started on the world police role our men and women play and often lose their lives to.
  • huh? where's my avatar?

Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

I don't know either. I know it was a big deal here in HK and the media was all over it to help the US.

It's more fun to be in the US and to speculate and be bitter though w/o knowing.

I actually see it as a fault of the US (and Canada), not of the other nations'. The US is the one doling it out. One can't expect others not to take it or even ask for it during times of need. It is the decision of the US and the US alone to give it to them or not. If you think there is blame to be laid anywhere, it should be laid on the US government, not the countries who take the aid.

I am all for helping people out, but when countries have MASSIVE debt, I don't think the government should be offering ANY aid to anyone. If individuals want to send donations for it that is wonderful, and North Americans are amazingly generous that way, but I disagree with governments giving foreign aid with tax dollars when they are buried in trillions of dollars of debt.

Exactly which is why America is exceptional! We helped Haiti so much you cannot measure! We also helped Japan so much you cannot measure and most dont see how much we do. Thanks for seeing it! We do alot for others, all over this world.

As generous as the US has been regarding some events throughout the world... I think it is fair to say that the US spends a great deal of money nurturing and shaping international relations so that when they venture forth with 'questionable' foreign policies... strategic alliances- having been bought and established- offer little protest.

There's more than meets the eye. As much goodwill as there might be... there's also other motivation. Let's at least acknowledge that.

I would agree there's motivation. Just wish the countries that are actually shrouded by the comfrt they have because of the US would pay back.

This was broadcast around the world, so I imagine many from other countries have reciprocated on the charity front; haven't yet read anything about the funds raised though.

Couple things about the concert itself - I didn't catch the bit of McCartney with Nirvana except for a snippet on the news this morning. Was it really as bad as it sounded? Voice-wise, that is...

Also, I may have been high while watching portions (OK, I WAS high  ), but did anyone else think the dude singing next to Roger Waters looked alarmingly like a poor-man's Ed? I found it hilarious.

And Comfortably Numb was gorgeous! Really nice to hear/see those two together.
