You are able to buy TVs and cable, get exercise, regular meals, get a job.
I have no idea why people living on the streets don't do something stupid and just get locked up.
The guy I know doing life doesn't have TV and cable. A magazine subscription is a big deal to him. He does have a clerical job but it's not like he makes a bunch of money, just enough to buy incidentals.
We still correspond with him. He doesn't complain about his situation but I don't get the impression there's anything desirable about how he lives.
Not everyone can get TV and it's not always available but a lot of times you can buy it. You only get certain channels though. I think most things with violence, sex, etc. aren't available.
I'm not saying it's easy at all, but I also think I would prefer it to sleeping on the streets in 20 degree weather.
Been there, done both. I'll take freezing and free.
edit....Had a job working 8 hours a day 5 days a week. Paid $20/month.
I don't have any family members who went top jail but I have alot of clients who have gone to jail. I would say over 75 clients ranging from murder to child abuse to arson to child pornography.

i do know somebody that spent a few years in the state pen. interesting place to visit as a kid.
had two friends that got caught with about 10 lbs of marijuana along the LA/TX border. They did about 2-3 years apiece. Also have a friend who was convicted of embezzling $50k+ from the private school of whom she was president. Cant recall how long she served but she's out and doing really well now. It's hard for me to beleive that she actually did what they say she did. As for me, the most I've done is about 12 hours
