They're all great, Kyle. I'd suggest either XO or Figure 8.

Cat Power is headlining a tribute concert for Elliott in Brooklyn in a few weeks time

    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)
  • Either/Or is his masterpiece IMO.

My second favorite Elliott album is actually Heatmiser's "Mic City Sons" Phenomenal record.
    NERDS!

wow, it certainly is surprising its been 10 years since his death

if you listen to Benaroya Hall, right before Cant Keep, Ed says - this is for Elliott

the show was the day after his death

Lou Barlow from Sebadoh has a cool post about Elliott on his website. It's a really nice message about a friend:

It's strange to think it's been almost 10 years already. I didn't hear Elliott until the Waltz #2 single came out but his lyrics had an instant impact on me. I remember going to pick up the XO record and the guy in the music store recommended Either/Or as well so I got them both. I still love those records the most, although Figure 8 is up there too.

One of my favourite ES lyrics is from the end of Happiness:

What I used to be will pass away and then you'll see
That all I want now is happiness for you and me
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)
  • I don't know how I missed this thread! I love, love, LOVE Elliott Smith.

Did anyone happen to catch the event in Portland a few days ago? JJ Gonson put up a show of photos from the Heatmiser years, and William Todd Schultz was there to sign his new book and do a Q&A. I wish I could've been there, but I'm on the wrong side of the states.

This is my tribute to E....

If I knew where it was, I would take you there....

  • Can't believe its been 10 years. Guy was an incredible talent. Such a great songwriter. Wish he could have gotten the help he so clearly needed.
