Yup...what a fucking talent. Listening to "New Moon" now and it's just unreal. It's sad that King's Crossing seemed to be his own personal eulogy.

One of the best songwriters ever. King's Crossing is so depressing....but so beautiful. RIP, Elliott.

  • MFC, have you heard his 2003 concert from the Henry Fonda Theater? It's on archive.org I know. You can tell he's fucked up in the show. Opens with King's Crossing and it's just heartbreaking. Amazing show though.

Yeah, I've heard that one. It's a tough one to listen to. One of my favorite boots is Live From the Black Cat. You should check that out!

Actually, he was sober by that point, and for all of 2003. Just do yourself a favor, and don't look up anything about his Sunset Junction show in LA in 2001.

You want to hear something eerie, youtube the song "Misery Let Me Down" from him. It's an unfinished song (to the general public, at least) that he played while warming up for a radio show. The bad part is, he quit playing it before he was finished, leaving everyone guessing as to how it ended.

Definitely Needle In The Hay is my favourite from his self-titled album.

I think Coming Up Roses is my second favourite, what about you

That's not the wisest choice of music if you are bummed out. You need something uplifting and energetic. If I am ever depressed, the last thing I want to listen to is something like Elliott Smith or Nick Drake.

Back in I think '97 or '98ish I was living in NYC and was in the Village seeing the band Dead Moon (it's OK tag!) in a bar (I think Brownies was the bar, on Ave A). I got there early and was sitting at the nearly empty bar reading my fave columns of a local paper. A very pale guy sat near me and was talking to some people. I was reading and commenting out loud and sometimes laughing out loud, and eventually I could tell someone was watching me, I turned, and the pale guy said "Can I ask what you're reading?" (at that moment it was a column called "Dirty Sanchez" that I'm pretty sure was secretly written by Soul Coughing's M. Doughty). I told him and showed it to him and we both kept reading.

We had a nice conversation, about Dead Moon, about NY bars, about NYC. I'm pretty sure we introduced ourselves to each other, but I'd never seen him before so his name didn't mean anything.

We kept talking and eventually 2 shy young folks came up and again I got that feeling of being watched... turned around and they were clearly waiting for him. When he said hi to them, they asked him to sign something and said they were big fans. I obviously caught on that he was a known artist, but still didn't really know who he was.

We ran into each other several times during the show and always had a brief chat, and when I saw him on my way out we had a nice exchange on the level of "It was really cool talking to you throughout the night".

It was years later (even after Good Will Hunting, where I knew the song but didn't connect it to the guy) when I finally saw him in a magazine and thought "Hey, that was that guy at Brownies! Cool!"

As usual, only got to really appreciate the talent after he was no longer with us. Still so sad he's gone, and really hate the way he went out (cuz it was never established whether he did it himself or was killed).

Per the "Deceased musicians you miss most" thread, at least we know he's up there with great company!

I think if any one really cared. He would be alive today. He was a stranger in a different time. No one except a few saw his brilliance.

I read an article , in his suicide letter...

He said no one gets it and he gives up... not a direct quote.

But every one bashed him and called him a wuss. He was too depressed to carry on. He did what he did the same year as Kurt. Do I prove a point? I rather save Elliot, then spend time with Kurt.

I'm glad he's getting recognition FINALLY.

IF one person had said yeah you are great, we love you, he might still be here.

He felt and was told he was meaningless, and his music sucked.
