I like the term Happy Holidays ...

it goes way back long before people were politically correct.

To me it takes Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years
and ties them up in a pretty bow :D
then if one celebrates a different holiday it puts it in there too.

The phrase here is 'Have a blessed holiday' I like that too.

Never thought of it that way. That's a really good explanation.

I'm just thankful to have a few days to see old friends, drink some brew, and see the joy of children opening gifts.

Oh, and you had better believe I'll be rocking some Andy mother 'effing Williams Xmas tunes! :D

To anyone who wishes me the two phrases in the subject line, I say thank you. It's a sweet intent, and appreciated.

For all of the so-called and called-for tolerance these days, there is so much that (to me, unnecessarily) offends people.

There are times I want to tell some folks to just shut the fuck up, grow a thicker skin, and accept the kindness and good energy offered.

(you'll take it, and like it :P )

Guess who started this 'War On Christmas'?
    Retailers.
Retailers that want Christian dollars... and Jewish dollars and Hindu dollars and Muslim dollars and Scientologist dollars and Atheist dollars...
    ...
It is the SAME Retailers that started all of the commercialization of Christmas... Santa Claus (in his current day incarnation) is is relatively modern invention to sell shit... originally, it was TOYS. The original Santa Claus was a formed from a Catholic Saint. and if you want 'Tradition'... why not bring back Krampus, Santa's demonic side-kick that doled out punishment to 'naughty' children?
    ...
This whole 'War On Christmas' was invented by Bill O'Rielly to whore out his book, 'Culture Wars'. Only the dumbest in our society believes in it. 'Silent Night' is NOT outlawed. Neither are Nativity Scenes (excpet on Public Property funded by ALL Taxpayer dollars). You can put you Nativity Scene up in your front yard... your Church can put a Nativity scene up on it's property... just don't have non-christians fund your graven images on everyone's public property.

I see your point but if they already have, lets say the nativity scene and it has been put up for about the last fifty years..or a cross.......why all of a sudden does some group take them to court to stop it?....it cost nothing. On the other hand going to court does cost the tax payer money.

because public property should not cater to any one religion. EVER. simple as that. doesn't matter how long it's been going on.

To me... it is NOT about a Nativity Scene on Public Property as being seen as 'offensive'... it is more about it being 'exclusive'.
Example, how would you feel about a Symbol of Ramadan being hoisted up in from of your County and State buildings on your taxpayer dollars? Would you be offended by that?
My guess, probably not, because you are not insane. But, you would probably not want your taxpayer dollars being spent that way, right?
My point being... if you allow a Nativity Scene at Christmas... then, you HAVE to allow every other religion to do the same for their religious holidays, right? Minoras would have the same rights as Nativity Scenes... as would any images and/or symbols related to Islam, Hindi, Buddhism, Scientology, Santaria, Jedi Religion, Atheism, etc... That would fit into our founding principle of Freedom Of Religion... including Freedom From Religion.

If it is part of tradition that has been going on for years ....no problem with it....It is part of Americans culture.

So... you would have absolutely no problem with the Islamic Law... being publicly funded by tax dollars... set up next to the 10 Commandments... in your local courthouse.
    Well... good for you. Seriously.

Has that been the tradition in this country if yes...I am cool with it..... Sharia has not been part of the American culture for years has it?...NO.....so no, I am not cool with it. Americans should NOT have to give up part of the AMERICAN culture to please anyone.

So... for you.. it all depends. If is existed before you were born... it's okay. If it happens while you are living... not okay. No new traditions. Got it.
Does that mean you'll be okay with it after you're dead?

Have you forgotten there is no "American Culture"? We live in a melting pot!!! Not to mention, conservatives need to give up on "traditional America". Things are changing, demographics are changing, the world constantly in a state of change. So you're gonna have to get used to it.

I agree. And as far as giving a name to our culture, I'm in agreement with the term Derrick Jensen and others use for the culture that extends to all developed and developing countries: "the dominant culture".

This is what he means by that. it's lengthy but the first few minutes relate to "dominant culture". The whole video is well worth checking out:

What's your cut off date for American culture? Before the Irish came here? Before the slaves were freed? Before colour TV?

If there's publicly funded religious displays, then all religions who ask for funding /space for their display should get the same amount.

Can you please define 'American culture' as you see it?

100% agreed. Sorry, the American far right doesn't have the right to define what is part of "American Culture" and what is not.
