That's the only thing we don't do...
We host every year on the 23rd because that's when everyone gets back from exams, usually around 30 people. I spend the day in the kitchen/drinking and then friends help serve the food as the party goes on..
But basically it's just a mess with everyone waking up hungover on Christmas eve. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Great article don't care about the accuracy...
I like the message, I'll share it too ... how daring of me!
MERRY CHRISTMAS! GOD BLESS US ALL!
and thank you aerial
Oh good, Pandora will be kind enough to explain it to me......
Pandora, do you really think that God, being the "Gentleman that He is", stood back and let Hurricane Katrina "happen" because we don't have prayer in school anymore?
Don't you instead think that this is actually a horrible thing to insinuate both towards God and school chilrden (and their loved ones)?
Thanks, and like I said in a previous post, I'm just really curious if this is INDEED the message. Because goshdarnit, that's what it SAYS!! :(

I love this time of the year - the Winter Solstice on 25th December - with the tree, the lights, the carols, the feasting, even the gifts but we all know these are not christian traditions. Their origin are from way, way before christianity. Really, apart from the nativity, all these traditions are pagan traditions 'hijacked' by christian holy men who found these offensive but couldn't curtail the celebrations. So it was decided that December 25th one would celebrate the birth of christ (whom, if one does believe in the bible, was not born on this date) and not the Winter Solstice (known under various names, eg Saturanilia).
So be it for the christians - I really don't mind if they want to claim the Winter Solstice celebrations as their traditions but then let them not be offended when those who go for the 'real' traditions wish to call it yuletide or say happy holidays/festivities or call the tree something other than 'christmas tree'.
What does offend me though is the commercialisation of this time of the year. The 'festivities' beginning earlier and earlier so one can fit in a bit more shopping, spend a bit more money, get the people 'in the spirit' for an early start. I think all this was spoken about in another thread anyway. The christian spirit of christmas has been completely lost in our society.
And as for the article in the OP, I can only give it the smirk it deserves. I would laugh at this pathetic and fake article but I can't because I know some people will read this as 'truth'.

It is funny that a few hundred years ago, Christians condemned the decoration of a fir tree around Christmas as a pagan practice (which it is) and now they are so sensitive about it being called a 'holiday tree' (which, in the case of the White House, it isn't).
I've abandoned the Christianity I was brought up to believe, but I continue to put up a tree in my living room every December and decorate it with lights and fun stuff. I still call it a Christmas tree, mainly out of habit, but I think of it as a fun tradition that predates Christianity. All of the good and fun traditions of what we now call Christmas are Pagan. If Christmas were only about Christ, let's be honest, it wouldn't be merry!
So basically, Christmas equals Christmas plus Yule Tide including the drinking, the ham, and the log, but less the loading up of sprinklers with blood and covering the walls. and maybe the absence of a beserker or two.
Got it. :P
Somehow I overlooked the part about sprinklers with blood and berserkers. Christians really do take the fun out of everything.
First of all, as a non religious/spiritual person, I sincerely wish a Merry Christmas to you, Aerial.
I don't think there are many of us, though, that believe Christmas displays, etc. should be taken down from private property or that you cannot practice your religion in churches or any other private space. Knock yourselves out. We just don't want our tax dollars being spent on the promotion of any religion in government spaces or public schools. As someone that appears to be mostly on the conservative side of things, I would imagine you could appreciate that. Seems like that would be the "limited government" way to me.
"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win ."
Merry Christmas? and God bless you? HOW DARE YOU USE THESE WORDS! Dont you see that their is an effort to shut down these beliefs! We must abide by the pressures brought on from the Socialist Progressive movements! As of now they hide when they can, but when they have ample support....watch out! They will jump when ready....they will get loud when they think they have ample support! Christmas is under attack in America! God is under attack in America! Christians under attack in America! If they cant shut us up, they will try to shut us down!
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD BLESS EVERYONE ON THIS SITE, including those who dont believe!
Even if you dont believe in God.....its healthy for others to do so! Society is better when people believe in a higher power, so just have empathy and enjoy all those Chrstmas trees, Christmas gifts, and messages from GOD!
Also, enjoy all those MEATS that come along with the Christmas holiday season!

You know, whats its ALL supposed to be about anyway.

HE WHO ENTERS AMT MAY FIND "WHINEY ASS SHIT" therefore, maybe he should not enter.....
maybe those of us who believe differently are fucking tired of so called christians getting butt hurt over stupid shit. In case you hadnt noticed this is a nation comprised of many different faiths.
From where I sit, most of these so called christians do not follow the man they claim to believe in. Its more a label of old testament followers getting an interpretation from another FALLIBLE human being. Rather than walking where Jesus supposedly walked, helping those he supposedly helped. You know, being christ like.
I dont recall Jesus sitting around a lighted tree claiming this was somehow the way we are to celebrate his birth. Must have been edited out of the bible I got. Its happened many times. Guess they figured on this particular edit, it needed to be removed.

"Happy Holidays" and "Holiday Tree" are terms that needs to go in the garbage. It's Christmas. There's nothing offensive about it. It doesn't bother me when other faiths have their holy days. And if i lived in a part of the world where that holiday was huge i wouldn't be offended at all.
I love stores that still say Merry Christmas or Happy Christmas.
Now I can gladly say: Merry Christmas to everyone!

you generalize a LOT. that's a very sweeping statement. I know a lot of intolerant folks, both christians and atheists. I know christians who keep their shit to themselves, and I know atheists who are downright rude about christianity, and vice versa.
the only difference that I see? christians who push their views on others get defensive when atheists don't react well, and hide behind "but it's a positive message! what's wrong with you?". To some the christian view is NOT a positive message. both sides need to be sensitive to the other sides' beliefs.
if someone were to put up a billboard proclaiming god is lord to all, some atheists might get upset. christians might react with "well then the message is not for you, don't worry about it". but if an atheist group were to put up a billboard "Earth is our Mother, a Mother for All, worship none but the Earth", some christians, actually, I'd argue, many, would flip out at its "insensitivity" and blasphemous message.
I honestly see it a little more one-sided in the message pushing department, it's just that christians are getting confused at the amount of pushing back they are getting.

Hugh really does sum this up quite well here, fear.
Did you know that one of the worlds best know atheists, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. once gave a talk in a church... ON A SUNDAY! He was very polite to them and they received him quite well. No one yelled at any one. No one accused any one of anything. In fact, if I recall correctly, Vonnegut received polite applause at the end of his talk. I'd love to see this put up here if anyone finds it.

I really do appreciate these Christmas threads. You see, my wife is very big into Christmas. She wears Christmasy clothes from the day after Thanksgiving right up through Christmas. She's not into the religious aspect of it, just the holiday spirit thing- the colors, the decorations, the festivities, Christmas music, getting together with family and friends. Other than that last part- the getting together part, I personally have no interest. In fact I've said it before here and (unwisely) to her that I get more than a bit tired of having this whole Christmas thing foisted on me for at least 10% of each and every years. In fact, the residue of Christmas can be felt as much as 15% to 20% of the year.
I'm sorry if what I'm saying here is getting on anyone's nerves but to my defense I must say that
a) I can say these things uninterrupted here whereas at home I don't get very far with this sort of thing and
b) Most of you are more open to a good debate about this this topic and
c) You can ignore my words and let me have my ridiculous say and not have to read or hear it whereas my dear wife either has to put up with it or tell me to shut up. It's so much easier for you because with just one click of the mouse I go... POOF!
If you've read this far, well, ah what the hell, Merry Christmas! :P
