 Must be one of my fellow US history teachers that helped organize that sign! He was teaching Civil War and I saw his test today where a question stated that the southern states had SUCCEEDED from the Union.

 Do ya think that's the problem? All along they've had teachers that didn't spell check and mistakenly thought they had succeeded and not seceded?? :D
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

One final point on how seriously you should take these "petitions:"

Actually, that one makes a lot more sense than the Hillbilly States Of America petition.

Seriously? After the way he was treated in Bhutan, I'd be afraid of him dropping the hammer on them in the first month. Plus, he never served.

Chuckle of this thread goes to Satansfuton; weeknights and Sunday, except for foottball season and home by Conan! Hope I got all that right.:lol::lol:
I'm begining to think those emoticons are a fine thing!
Oh yeah, how to spell the damn word comes in for a close tie!

**On a more serious note: 40, (some news sites say 50) states have now filed. This is us. WE as a nation—are dividing and that is not funny.

I wouldn't worry about it at all if I were you. It's just an internet petition, under the guise of secession. An internet petition with 50,000 signatures (see, people will sign anything) to keep Nickelback from playing the halftime show at a football game in Detroit last Thanksgiving didn't even amount to anything. It doesn't really matter how many states there are, we all know there are Romney supporters in every state, Obama didn't carry any place with 100% of the vote, so you're going to have these petitions from all 50. People will calm down, the election is still fresh. People are overreacting, that's all. Signing an internet petition does not indicate an actual willingness to secede, it's all hot air. I signed the Nickelback petition just for giggles, yet I could have really cared less who played the halftime show. And I certainly wasn't motivated enough to actually DO anything about it, and nobody tried to physically remove Nickelback from the stadium.

  • satansfuton; by the way, I love the pic you use.
Yeah, I agree. It's referred to as mostly symbolic. But! And here's the part that concerns me; but symbolic of what? Evidently, this kind of talk has happened before but never to this degree and this is what deserves a bit of our focus. We keep reading about how polarized we are, about how decisive this election will be, and on a personal level, I have a good handful of family and friends that are so bummed with the outcome, poeple who are smart, ones who are not right wing lunatics (which seems to be the picture painted for anyone not enamored with Obama or the outcome) and I visualize their worries expanded across this nation.
Yeah, time heals all wounds alright. But time soon enough—will not alleviate their valid concerns. I truly think this has more to do with hoping the next guy was gonna come with the right box of fix-alls and that's easier to entertain than it is to embrace ourselves cumulatively, as the ONE team which must come up with a new game plan.
Indeed, we are cumulatively—the one dance partner that has nearly invincbile powers—but only if we unify.

ok, having now seen the movie since it went nationwide, I must sayt its b=very well done.

Also that politics havent much at all in the time since the country began, I would say . The only thing that has is the ideology of the parties involved.

That said , there are plenty of lessons to be learned fromthe movie.

It also brought to mind my experience as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Being a memer of a group means I should participate in the "business meetings" for how the group operates. We have a set of 12 principles on the group/organization level as a guide, but ultimately any decisions reside solely with the members in attendence at those meetings.

What struck me , was I have my own personal views about what these 12 principles mean to me personally and how they apply to me personally, as member I need to set my personal viewpoints aside because what may be best for ME might not be the best for the group or AA as a whole.
In times that I disagree with a vote, I eventually come to see the wisdom of a group action or wait patiently while the action reveals itself to be ineffectual.
I should think that this process we have in place with AA could most certainly benefit Congress if they acted in a similar manner.Instead what we get is folks WE vote in out for selfish interest of themselves and those like themselves.

For those interested in what these principles are I would refer you to AA's website www.aa.org . it is possible to read these in book form in our book 12 steps and 12 traditions which I believe can be read online.
